I can’t imagine there’s that much overlap between DOOL fans and streaming service users. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a way to sunset the show at the end of its contract. I also wouldn’t be shocked if the blowback forces them to reverse course.

Hmmmmmm ... lotta people here seem to know D-O-O-L characters and storylines. Maybe it wasn't "Mom" who did all the watching?

RE: A rather big example of the shift of on-the-air programming
My mom has been an avid watcher for 60 years. They started streaming a spin-off of the show on Peacock last year. The spin-off had a lot of the more popular characters (both old and new).

I suspect NBC knows they have a very loyal fan base who will go out to buy the streaming service. On the other hand, I bet there are a lot of elderly members in the fan base who will obviously miss the boat on this.

RE: A rather big example of the shift of on-the-air programming
Network TV is basically coming down to these primary forms of programming:

(1) Sports
(2) News
(3) Series produced by the news department (e.g. Dateline, any crime/scam documentary)
(4) Reality show competitions (e.g. The Voice, The Bachelor, America's Got Talent)
(5) Game shows

Those are basically all of the categories that still get viewers to watch them live, with the common thread being timeliness and/or competition.

There's going to be less and less scripted content on network TV - that's better monetized (or at least the expenses are more justified) on a streaming service.

My mom used to tape it and watch it when she ate her lunch, even though she stayed home all day. I remember watching it when I was real little, then in jr high and high school in the summer when I was home, I'd ask so what are Bo and Hope up to? Did anyone get killed off? Did Stephano come back from the dead? Then at Fresno St, I'd go to this girl's house for lunch, sometimes and she would have it on. So it's been about 22-23 yrs since I've seen or heard anything about the show.

I saved half time/pre game and post games from the NFL Today and NFL Live in the 80s. I remember the broadcaster saying stay tuned after the game for the network television premier of back to the future...except on the west coast. Sun would always have a big movie. I don't know if nbc, cbs, abc, fox even have movies on anymore.

Isn't that kind of like "Who Shot JR?" Which time that he came back from the dead?!

My wife would tape it and watch after she came home from work or on weekends. She had been watching it since her teens.

Same. I recall the serial killer/mind-control storyline of the early 2000s because my mom was obsessed with it and always talked about it. Anything since then? Not a clue.

I remember watching that w/ Grandma. Dallas and Falcon Crest. I don't remember much of it though. I was all about A-Team, Dukes, Greatest American Hero

You'd be surprised. My understanding is that the major streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ may have audiences that skew younger than linear TV in general, but still have a lot more older users than what is commonly perceived. Even YouTube has a fairly broad user base age-wise. It's really TikTok usage that skews very young compared to older age groups.

The bigger complaint will likely be more that a LOT fewer people have Peacock compared to Netflix and Disney+, which is probably why Peacock wants to move shows like its soap operas to that platform in the first place.

They wouldn't be wrong

Soap operas also go through realignment, many actors and actresses leave their character rolls and appear on other soap operas. Some later return to the character role they previously participated with.

The name of the game in streaming is having something that you'll pay for. DOOL is probably down to hardcore fans who will follow DOOL to streaming, and sign up for the app or pay the subscription fee or whatever. Doesn't really matter if they don't watch anything else on the app/service, as long as they keep paying their $$$ every month.

And if they don't follow DOOL to Peacock, they'll probably just keep watching whatever Channel 4 runs in that timeslot as background noise while they vacuum or whatever. The great thing about streaming for the networks / providers is that htey know exactly what you're watching when you watch it and for how long.

There's some wiggle in that--if usage of a subscription is low enough, you hit the point where people who signed up for X drop it when X loses it's shine. You signed up for Netflix 5 years ago, you're still not caught up on Stranger Things, and there's a bunch of stuff on HBO MAx you'd like to see, but you're not going to pay for both--that's a spot Netflix would rather not be in.

ABC is thinking of bringing back One Life To Live. Every program that they bring on got less viewers. NBC will be hurting right now if they do that. I think they will be only doing that on the large tv markets because New York City and larges cities like that wanted those time slots for news while the small markets don't have the money to run more hours of local news.

Also beginning Sept. 12, in the timeslots previously occupied by “Days of Our Lives,” “NBC News Daily” will debut across NBC stations. The hourlong program is anchored by NBC News’ team including Kate Snow, Aaron Gilchrist, Vicky Nguyen and Morgan Radford. It will also be streamed simultaneously on NBC News NOW and Peacock.

It's not local news, it's a national news broadcast.

How many people will tuned in when the news are repeat of what it was in the morning? The GMA like at 11 AM CST is not doing well. People are tuning out of the news lately.

Viewership of news programs is holding up better than any program category other than sports.

Both CliftonAve and johnbragg have it right.

Any series with an obsessively loyal fanbase who will watch it over-and-over again is perfect for streaming.

Especially if it's 100+ episodes so that fans can't binge-watch the whole series the weekend before dropping the service. I'm very curious if they'll put all 14,000 episodes online.

If this prompts 10% of the DOOL fans buy Peacock, this could be a big win for NBC.
