NBC Pushing for Big Ten/NFL Primetime Pairing in Media Rights Deal
“The Big Ten would have exposure in every TV home,” said one source to Front Office Sports. “It would also be a smart idea to follow the model of the most successful sports league in America.”

Big Ten media rights negotiations are getting closer to being completed. The results could mean a minimum of $1.25 billion annual distribution for the conference’s soon-to-be sixteen members. One of the bidders in the process, NBC, has an interesting idea to make the Big Ten the “NFL of college football conferences.”

NBC has reportedly pushed the idea of combining Big Ten broadcasts with its existing Notre Dame coverage and would feature the Big Ten in its primetime window. With CBS, ESPN/ABC also bidding on coverage packages, such a series of deals would make the Big Ten the only college football conference that would be seen across all of the American broadcast networks. Something only few entities have done, like the NFL.

NBC is also pushing the allure of having primetime Big Ten football on Saturday night and primetime coverage of Sunday’s only NFL evening game with Sunday Night Football.

SEC: “When you’ve had exactly 1 national championship since 2002, you may not refer to yourself as ‘The NFL of College Football’.”

I mean... yeah, I'm watching an SEC game in prime time... maybe even a Clemson game. Have fun bundled up in that Saturday night breeze though future NBC broadcast team (at least Drew Brees is gone).

As long as ND stays indie, it's fine with me.

Well now that they've acquired USC, they've doubled their NC count from 2 to 4 in the past 20 or so years, right? If you can't beat 'em...buy 'em!

Meh, if you say so? People watch BIG football because of the brands. TV numbers are always really solid and it's hilarious how National Titles are all people think of on here. Hell, the Dallas Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl in what, 26 years? Yet they draw eyeballs to the TV.

National Titles are great, the SEC has a bunch! Don't give a damn! Still going to watch tOSU and all the BIG Ten west schools, minus Minnesota.

The PAC is "fractured", the Big XII has always been doomed and the ACC will be next.

I do think the B1G and every other conference is justifiably jealous (or at least admires the performance) of the mighty SEC. They earned it. NC's aren't everything, but they are a huge deal. No one can question that the SEC is the best league, by a wide margin, so far in this century/millennium. And the gap is just going to widen. Until the wheels come off college football anyway.

I hate the heartless game of the NFL
When cfb gets to that point which I’m sure it will I believe I’ll move down to a lower level of football where they still care if they win or lose.

This is exactly what I thought NBC wants.

I think the Notre Dame talk of pair is just talk, the Irish are redundant, 2nd tier. They really don't care about keeping that if they get the Big Ten contract, and they only have two years of overlap. The Saturday Night games and NFL of College Football says they'd like more West Coast too, because that is where it makes sense, in Los Angeles, Santa Clara and Seattle. 6:30pm PST games there are at NFL locations and still not awful kickoffs. It's kind of nasty to do a 8:30pm November kickoffs in Madison, Lincoln, Chicago, or 9:30pm in New Jersey, Happy Valley, Columbus or Ann Arbor.

When talking about separation and postseason legitimacy, titles carry a lot of weight.

A 24 SEC with FSU, Clemson, and Miami can start its own postseason, and it will be THE postseason. The tournament that determines the champion of college football.

The BIG a highly watched other tournament.

NBC wouldn't be doing a 930e/830c/630p timeslot. Saturday Night Live would start at halftime.

NBC would be doing a 730e/630c/430p timeslot.

So NBC wants to keep the B1G and ND separate entities? Wouldn't it be better to tell ND to become part of the B1G and be more profitable for ND?

I think a bloated made for TV product window project like this as proposed is gonna be destined for some membership issues at some point.

Who is going to tell ND?

Then after they tell, then what?

Unlike Stugray, I believe that ND will sign a separate new deal with NBC.

The Big Ten and ND can co-exist and compliment each other on NBC.

Hell, this is the old dream pairing that first Big East then AAC schools dreamed of.

Instead, NBC may have upped the ante to make it ND/Big Ten.

It makes a lot of sense

FOX with a Big Noon game
CBS filling the old SEC on CBS Slot
NBC with a 7PM primetime game

BTN/FS1 and ESPN/ABC picking up the rest

Do they have enough quality games to fill a package with 4 big $$ deals?

So you'd rather people watch your teams than win championships?

Maybe in the Midwest. No one in Texas cares. I'd imagine a lot of the country feels that way. People watch the Cowboys because they either love them or absolutely hate them.

So NBC only wants a prime time game? No content for Peacock?

I wonder how much that one game will run them, assuming they are rotating #1 & #2 picks with FOX?

Is NBC going to want to give ND the $75M they want bad still pay for Big 10 games?

What ever happened with NBC’s interest in the Big 12 for the early slot?

If this is true, I expect someone just got wrong info on B12.
