Dodd: Big Ten interest in additional Pac-12 teams has cooled, Big 12 positioned well
“After the anxiety caused last week regarding further Big Ten expansion, industry sources have indicated the Big Ten is no longer as interested in adding California, Oregon, Stanford and Washington. Rightsholders were balking at paying the same amount for those schools as the 16 Big Ten schools going forward ($80 million-$100 million).”

"No one has ever gone in and gutted a conference," Benson added [OP note: I guess he doesn’t remember the Big East] "If the Big Ten gutted a conference and took Washington and Oregon, if I was Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff, I might pursue antitrust action there."

Reading the article (assuming everything is true), it makes me think that if B1G gets ND, the B1G may only grab Stanford or maybe Washington and call it a day. That way PAC-12 can still grab SDSU and live on at 10 teams, and the B1G avoid potential lawsuits. Maybe the SEC grabs Kansas and OkSt/WVU for 18, but I doubt it.

From John Canzano (The Oregonian):
The ADs I spoke with said they haven’t seen any potential revenue numbers yet.
Said one AD, “The dialogue, candor, and environment have been positive. Everyone is moving in the same direction.”
Are there still threats out there?
Sure.
Said the AD: “It’s a singular threat — the Big Ten and the Big Ten only. That’s it. The Big 12 threat is laughable.”

I floated that Oregon-Washington-Stanford question to a current Big Ten Conference athletic director, who waved it off. "I think Stanford might be interesting to our conference presidents just because of the academic piece,” he said, “but unless Notre Dame is coming in too, I don’t think further expansion happens in this cycle.”

RE: Dodd: Big Ten interest in additional Pac-12 teams has cooled, Big 12 positioned well
My prediction.

We end up with 4, 16 team Conferences and 1, 12 team Conference within the Power 5. There will only be 2 true Super Powers, B1G and SEC. The 16 team Big 12 and ACC conferences will be Power conferences with close to half the value of the B1G and SEC's media deals. The PAC will be a Power Conference in name only as it falls further behind the rest.

I truly believe that 16 is the maximum number of schools/teams that should be within a Football Conference. That allows for 4 Divisions of 4 team and ever teams plays every other team home and home every 4 years. It's the best option for maintaining rivalries and establishing local or close divisional members. People forget that a large part of the money being generated comes form the fans whom still attend games. That's why regional divisions are so important. 04-cheers

The PAC won't die no matter what happens. It is just a question of who it contains.

Yup... this was the most likely outcome anyhow. ND probably staying put although it's a coin flip.

Time to invite SDSU and SMU. If Stanford is out, add a Rice to backfill. If they don't want Texas, go for UH/Zaga. Everyone comes in at 1/3 or 1/2 shares to not insult those schools too badly.

It would be interesting to see how the MWC and AAC react. That will give us some juice on these boards for quite some time.

They can't stay at 10 with SDSU on the board, unless SDSU plays hardball.

I find the PAC 12's obsession with the Big 12 pretty funny. It indicates they see the Big 12 as a threat. Odd how they could have neutralized that threat, but in a long line of bad decisions, the PAC is what it is and will never be anything more.

Dodd just writes for clicks, views. One day one story angle -- next the opposite. I don't follow him anymore.

From the OP's article:

"...Without Texas and Oklahoma, the Big 12 is valued north of $30 million annually per school, CBS Sports reported last week.

"The numbers look like they favor us," one Big 12 AD said. "Not by a huge amount. This is not like comparing Texas to Texas State. But there seems to be a noticeable difference....""

The Airport 5 gutted the WAC 16. And then they eventually destroyed what remained. I would think Benson would remember that. And the ACC gutted the Big East over time.

This makes the most sense. The BIG would only rush to add 1 school right now and that's ND (and whatever ND wants included), they can scoop up any PAC school whenever they want so there isn't a need to rush now when none of them add significant value. So it's best to take their time and evaluate the best next move. Personally I think the next big wave of expansion, unless ND decides to join in the next few years, is when the ACC becomes vulnerable to the SEC and BIG and that might take a while because of their GORs.

RE: Dodd: Big Ten interest in additional Pac-12 teams has cooled, Big 12 positioned well
Is Dennis Dodd a B12 cheerleader or something?

He wrote an article why the merge between B12 and Pac would make sense a few days before the talk was called off. His aricle about the BIG expansion made a zaeo sense. This is what I said right after his original article.

Dodd’s report doesn’t make sense to me.

He said,

Warren told CBS Sports the addition of any teams beyond USC and UCLA (joining in 2024) would come after the current media rights deal is finalized in August.

But Dodd also said,

Still, rightsholders who land portions of the lucrative Big Ten deal (still being negotiated) would be forced to outlay additional funds for those schools. The Big Ten's contract is already projected to be north of $1 billion annually.

How and why would the BIG add new schools after the media deal is done if FOX has to pay more for the new additions?

The bottom line in the report is that the addition of those four schools won’t make sense unless these schools get a significant permanent revenue cut. In other words, this would be very serious unequal revenue sharing.

Unless ND is in play, I don’t think the BIG will move.

ND is the rubber band that, when it snaps, will send everything else in motion.

If ND decides it’s time to move, the Big 10 will go back and look at those PAC 10 schools and the SEC will start pulling who they want from the ACC.

Dodd is a Missouri guy. He is about the most anti-Big 12 guy out there. He frequently writes articles trolling the Big 12.

I have respect for Karl Benson -- he takes a lot more blame for the WAC's downfall than he deserves, and did a good job of positioning the Sun Belt for success -- but I would not view him as a good source of information for anything that's going on right now with the Big 10, Pac-12 or Big 12. The guy retired in 2019 and probably doesn't have much in the way of connections or sources among the new regimes that have taken over in those conferences.

Dodd has been very hit and miss so it also wouldn't be a shock if talks are back on next week.
