MVFC Going to FBS?
MVFC To FBS As A Whole?

I found this comment from the MVFC's commish's comment the most hinted topic that I have ever seen from an FCS commish outside of the ASUN and WAC.

Quote:“This year I’ll be able to come early, stay late. I intend to meet with every coach, every AD and every president over the course of this fall,” she said. “As things unfold nationally, I think we have to have a game plan in place for how we will fit into whatever landscape develops.

“To me, the key to success across the entire division is that we maintain our ties to the highest level of Division I football. And that’s for the good of the game.”

The only way for the MVFC as a whole to stay tied to the highest levels of football is moving enmass to the FBS level. This is the only way I think that they can stay in touched with the big boys. How could this work? Merging with C-USA as football only affiliates, and try and get an ESPN tv media contract? MVFC from top to bottom could be better than MAC and C-USA right now, and NDSU and SDSU are usually up there getting votes along with the FBS schools.

He said "maintain." It seems to me he's saying that he wants to keep the Missouri Valley in the top division of college athletics, and alluding to speculation that the SEC and perhaps other conferences may bolt from Division I. The conference doesn't need to change subdivisions to achieve that.

Yes. If the P5 split off, she wants the MVC to be with the G5 in whatever division they are in. Or if Division I simply splits, she wants to be in the top half.

RE: MVFC Going to FBS?
The MVC is hard hit by what JRSEC describes, the declining student population. Southern Illinois, for instance, is now smaller than SIU-Edwardsville, and has less than 12,000 students. Its got barely half the students it did 25 years ago. WIU has a similar decline.

The signs are pointing to an FBS split for all sports with 1A and 1AA. MVFC wants to be 1A when that happens. Some of their best games are against FBS opponents.

RE: MVFC Going to FBS?
If this ever happened it would make for a fun league and rival league for the Sun Belt. I don't think WIU, UND, USD, and ISUb could make this happen though. I could also see them pulling in some established FBS schools as well.

FBS MVFC

SDSU
NDSU
UNI
Illinois State
SIU
Missouri State
Youngstown State

Expansion candidates

NIU
Toledo
WMU
CMU
Ohio

Olympics only
Bradley

I don't see the logic here. The MAC is already FBS.

I agree with others that you're probably reading too much into this. If there is a big FBS split off from the NCAA for football, maybe she'd like to be a part of that. But I doubt she's implying the whole conference plans to change subdivisions in the near future as things stand now.

That's what I got from it, too. No hard commitment to FCS, but no demonstration that they're interested in making any moves until things start getting weird.

Correct, everything I have heard out of South Dakota State is that if a break occurs they want to be with the current G5, not FCS. A lot of the stronger FCS schools have already moved on. Geography does not work in the XDSU's favor inside the current system based on current G5 leagues. Both are two far north and geographically isolated in small states.

Those schools are G5s that are stuck, agreed. Unfortunately, at this point, some sort of new conference popping up is the only way they get in. People used to snicker about a certain poster's fixation with a Great Northern Conference, but I'd imagine it would be something to explore if I was with the xDSUs and had an eye on FBS. It might take something unconventional like that to get a move up.

RE: MVFC Going to FBS?
The schools that want to be FBS become FB only members of C-USA while others like WIU, Indiana St., SIU?, YSU? either drop FB-- go to the OVC (FB affiliate) or some other FCS league.

New C-USA with 16-20 members ; the MVC folks would be FB only. NORTH-SOUTH DIVISIONS.

Murray St. remains FB only in OVC.

Probably only 6-8 teams would want to move up.

Why would CUSA want football only members? If they did, isn't UConn the one to go get? They're a former power conference school with a giant budget.

I know C-USA wants Missouri State in there. They would be a logical target.
Youngstown State does have an FBS size stadium already.
Getting MVFC schools committe to FBS might be enough for Western Kentucky to stay longer.

Why? Why would WKU prefer to stick around to play with a bunch more FCS call-ups with worse geography across the board over the MAC that they want to join now (over a league with many issues, but still better than that same group of schools plus a bunch more FCS call-ups).

It doesn't follow.

As for UConn, I don't want them either for football only. But they'd be the one school that might not be a net loss in conference media payout.

RE: MVFC Going to FBS?
The most realistic way to accomplish this would be in tandem with the Big Sky. Have 5-6 teams move up from each conference, and have an East-West division split for scheduling. The schools that have the means to move up can move up, and the teams that don't have the means stay in FCS. While the conference would still be spread pretty far, you'd have two clear geographic centers, so nobody would be a true geographic outlier. It should be competitive with C-USA in football in pretty short order.

That said, I would be shocked if this happened. NDSU is the key to this happening, and my impression from all of their actions is that they're aiming much higher than this if they are going to make the jump. But I would love to see it.

I don't see the logic here. The MAC is already FBS.

The logic is MAC schools would join the MVC now that its FBS for "better" basketball.

The reality is the MAC by signing on to a new CFP deal and TV deal will have the money to bring in better coaches to be more on the level of what the MVC and even the A10.

NDSU's fans aim higher, the administration is more realistic. The reality is, unless the PAC loses all but 2 - 4 schools and raid the top of the MWC to survive, NDSU is not getting into the MWC. The MAC, AAC, Sun Belt are not inviting them.

UCONN lost money on the fricking Fiesta Bowl because they couldn’t sell their ticket allotment. If you can’t even get your fans to go to the Fiesta Bowl, I can’t imagine your football team will be profitable to any conference.
