By the way, I give about the same odds for USF, except I give USF a slightly higher chance at ACC, particularly if the SEC takes Florida State or Miami.

So low on USF? 15 years ago they looked like the 4th FL program.

Unless Miami ends up forced to stay in ACC, I think USF is in a good position to get rewarded for their commitments like IPF and OCS (I think that is an overrated aspect, the payoff on that is decades as it grows student/alumni interest)

Either ACC backfills with USF, or the Big 12 (Big 16?) adds them. There are some in the Big 12 that want to focus on the east, feeling the 4 corners aren’t going anywhere. Either they come now, or come later, but it is immaterial, and no one is going to PAC. Getting the east well positioned is more critical. Adding USF preferred over Memphis.

This isn’t popular in Dallas, and I’d rather have CBS or NBC as media partners, but I’d prefer 10 Big 12 schools work to go to current ACC ASAP, with UCF as a replacement for FSU when needed, and USF as Miami’s replacement if needed (likely soon).

Assuming more than those two depart ACC, if 4 more ACC schools leave, down to 20, the 4 corners could be added, but Memphis makes as much sense as AZ imo.

Well, I hope USF does got to either ACC or Big 12. However, after having been burned twice in conference realignment, it's hard to be overly optimistic. I hope the new IPF, OCS and facilities USF is planning make a difference, but until I see conferences calling, I just can't get my hopes up. Getting left behind will do that to you.

Emotional hedges by USF fans are understandable.

There are some in the Big 12 that want USF added ASAP if the PAC signs a GOR. The long play in getting the ACC to come to them- and the Big 12 will see the PAC again when they have no choice.

That would push down the eventual "other guy" conference in perception. But as long as these weak conference HQs, and hence schools, are acting against each other, it is justified by blocking off ACC backfilling.

Imo even if the ACC added the best of the rest of PAC and Big 12 with all ex-P5s, if Miami and FSU leave, the 12PACC is not giving up on FL. ESPN would want ACCNet in FL, and UCF and USF are in. So, as long as one believes FSU and Miami are P2 bound, it is one and the same.

By the way, if you took the major “non-flagship” public of every state within the southeastern borders of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, it is a heck of an athletic conference. Someone will say this is rubbish because of academics, markets, traditional rivalries, and so on, but just let it be a pure college athletic conference for the moment:

Memphis
Louisville
Cincinnati
Virginia Tech
North Carolina State
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida State
Auburn (I know they essentially are their own flagship, too, but play along)
Mississippi State

10 schools who play round robin (9 games) and their in-state “flagship” rival (10th game) with two open games per year to do as they want. That’s a great league in essentially all of the sports that move the needle, not to mention proximity that promotes easier travel to follow your team.

There'd be some great barbecue in this conference!

It's a fun idea, but I should mention that Florida State and UF are twin universities, founded by the same act of legislation in 1851. Both are designated 'preeminent' universities in the state's higher education system.

The 1851 bill described the schools in reference to a river, for sure. Today's Florida State began as the 'seminary west of the Suwanee' with today's UF as the eastern counterpart.

I'm wondering how to get Louisiana, LSU, Tulane, and Southern Miss into this. Hattiesburg and New Orleans make nice road trips from Tallahassee.

I'm rooting for both Memphis and USF to get into the Best Of The Rest Layer with ACC, B12 and PAC survivors.

Agree that if the ACC loses a Florida member USF is placed for a quick call up. USF was interviewed the last time the ACC expanded and there's mutual interest.

What’s wrong with ECU football?

I have often wondered that myself.

USF will eventually end up with UCF wherever that may be.

#Facts

Also, USF's fans should be grateful to UCF for going all-in with an OCS, which, in conjunction with quality coaching hires, ultimately forced USF's administration to get off the pot or forever be left in the dust.

If the PAC stays together and stabilizes, that helps Memphis. If PAC poaches Big12 that really helps Memphis.

However....

If ND goes to Big 10 > leads to PAC schools going to Big 10 (Stanford, Cal, Ore., Wash, etc.) > leads to PAC 4 corners (Utah, CO, ASU, AZ) going to Big 12 > leads to Memphis opportunity in the Big 12 way less likely.

We are at critical point in realignment process. Should know soon.

I don't think the A3 expand with G5 schools. Outside shot the Pac stays intact and adds SDSU and SMU. Most likely all 3 stand pat. Second most likely scenario is some kind of consolidation with no G5s invited. USC/UCLA reduced the chance of Memphis getting in the Big 12. Now there are other future possibilities.

With the expiration of the ACC GOR is when Memphis has a chance to land somewhere other than AAC.

Totally agree with this on ACC front in the future.

However, if by chance....

1) the PAC poached the Big 12 for a team or two
2) The ACC invited Cincy/WVU for example...

Basically any scenario where the Big 12 loses a team or two. Or...

3) PAC stabilizes and adds 2-4 teams (SDSU, SMU, etc.) and the Big 12 is unable to lure the 4 corners. Does Big 12 invite Memphis/Boise or Memphis/USF to get back to 14 when TX/OU leave? Many believed the 2nd round of expansion Big 12 was considering was getting back to 14-16 after TX/OU left. Do they pick that back up if unable to lure PAC teams? Or just wait...

I know these are unlikely...but presenting paths...
