The Big 12 can't afford to sit still with only 12 teams. They're going to have to expand to 16 in order to remain competitive from a viewership standpoint with the Big Ten and SEC.

Memphis has consistently been cited as the top team on the Big 12's wish list, and that's unlikely to change. When the Big 12 makes their move, Memphis will probably be the first to go.

This is more important in basketball than football due to the perception of getting a similar number of NCAA bids. However, the Big 12 will probably get 7-8 bids most years so it will be fine.

Disagree, because football drives the bus. The Big 12 commissioner has made it clear that the conference is actively considering expansion.

.

Somewhere, always with, Tulane. 03-shhhh

Memphis fans and administration are sick about it. I know inside the administration Memphis felt very good about being added to Big 12 when OU/TX left....but now with PAC unstable they likely have hit the brakes on that.

So many things going well for the the university.

-R1 Designation this past year. Improved academically a ton.
-LB stadium renovation 2024-25
-Most AAC football wins since 2014
-46-8 home record since 2014 is 7th best in college football
-Solid basketball program
-Passionate fanbase and solid attendance
-Nice TV market that is passionate about college sports.

They deserve to be with Cincy, Houston, UCF. Those are their peers and I think those fanbases would even say so.

Some selective information here since Memphis football got rolling in 2014 ....but they are 5-1 in last 6 against Houston. 5-1 in last 6 against Cincy. UCF has had Memphis number. Ha Ha. I don't say any of that out of disrespect against Houston or Cincy....more of respect and just that Memphis has represented themselves well lately. I don't think people realize how good of a run Memphis football has been on.

I think the world of Cincy, Houston, and UCF....I just believe Memphis should be with them.

If PAC stays together or by chance the PAC poaches the B12 you would guess Memphis is next in line for B12. That is best option for Memphis and perfect geography fit.

If Big 12 doesn't materialize...then maybe next opportunity is with future ACC remnants when ACC gets picked apart by SEC/Big10.

Like I said...just really unfortunate and frustrating.

They are likely as big of fans of the P2 conferences going past 20 as the P2 hopefuls.

I still see a path to the 3rd super conference if the ACC gets decimated

One thing that will be interesting is since the Big 12 is actively in expansion mode....

If Big 12 is unable to lure PAC teams....do they go back to Memphis, Boise, SMU, USF? Or some combo of those to go to 14 or 16 when TX/OU leave.

My hunch would be they would wait it out to see if PAC or ACC falls apart in the future....but I know for fact they were talking to Memphis about a 2nd round of expansion. All of this was prior to USC/UCLA move.

Otherwise, it will be the AAC or whatever is the spiritual successor to the AAC (similar to how the AAC turned into the spiritual successor to the old C-USA).

It’s too bad since Memphis has an excellent fan base and great basketball brand in a good-sized market. They just seem to always be perpetually next in line for a power conference invite, but then someone jumps ahead of them or power league priorities shift.

UConn fans be like….

Back in a conference with Louisville and Cincinnati ... just as it should be

Amen, those river cities have their own vibe that makes it a unique relationship. By the way, if you took the major “non-flagship” public of every state within the southeastern borders of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, it is a heck of an athletic conference. Someone will say this is rubbish because of academics, markets, traditional rivalries, and so on, but just let it be a pure college athletic conference for the moment:

Memphis
Louisville
Cincinnati
Virginia Tech
North Carolina State
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida State
Auburn (I know they essentially are their own flagship, too, but play along)
Mississippi State

10 schools who play round robin (9 games) and their in-state “flagship” rival (10th game) with two open games per year to do as they want. That’s a great league in essentially all of the sports that move the needle, not to mention proximity that promotes easier travel to follow your team.

This is basically the old Metro Conference, which included at times UC, UofL, Memphis, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Florida State from this list. South Carolina was briefly in the league as well. The league did not sponsor football so most of those teams were Indy.

The issue is very much like the lyrics to the old J. Giels hit “Love Stinks”, teams often perceive themselves to have a rival, when the other team looks at someone else as a rival, and that team looks at someone else.

I think, when the dust settles, most tend to like to see the following in the same conference:

Memphis
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
West Virginia
Cincinnati

Louisville (or other ACC) if SEC doesn't take them. But that's a big if.

and maybe:

USF
UCF

That's at least 7 schools. If 12 is the magic number these days, then just need a few more.

Do you go for uconn? umass? BC? WF? Temple?

KS, KS state, and IA state, could be possibles as well.

And how about ND?

Maybe they should think about a conference of their own.

I think the chickens have finally come home to roost for Memphis and they will be on the outside looking in from now on. While Louisville, Cincinnati, and Houston spent hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars to make sure their Athletic departments looked and felt like P5 institutions, Memphis planted trees for Tiger Lane at the cities expense. I feel for the Memphis alumni who begged and pleaded their AD to address this over the last 25 years but it was all for not. Memphis is now locked in with us, Tulsa, Tulane, Rice, and SMU for the foreseeable future or until the ACC GOR expire.

Think so.

In any event, I don't see the Big 12 expanding with more G5s before seeing what happens to the ACC and Pac between now and 2036.

If the Pac manages to stay together, (I don't think that is going to happen) Memphis has real shot at the B12. If as I believe 2 years from now Big has added 2 or 4 more from Pac 12 then the B12 will grab 4 or 6 from the Pac 12, and Memphis likely stays in AAC for another 5 years.

Seems like they will be in the AAC for the next 10 years.

After that, maybe the New ACC after it survives the great ACC poaching of the 2030s.

I don’t see it the same way. The Pac will survive. If anything, they will go shopping for Big 12 schools (creating a spot for Memphis in the Big 12).

That’s just not happening. No one is going west to a west owned by the BIG

The Big 12 “nuke” option is the Big 12 going to the ACC, which should terrify the 4 corners.

Personally I’m in favor of it if ESPN gives UNC a longhorn network type subsidy to stay. Going east to form a 20-24 team ACC is better for nearly all than going west imo

If the 4 corners wounded pride has them stay in the PAC, and the Big 12 executes the nuke option, the 4 corners could be left with Kansas St and Iowa St in the mountain west

It could happen like that. Problem for Pac is you have 4 schools that are praying for a B10 invite, and another 4 Afraid that invite is coming. OR and WA, want extra $$ from next deal plus very short contract to sign, (possibly only a 3 year deal) and CA, and Stanford also want a little bigger cut, that means the 4 corner schools likely would be south of 20mil per year in order to hold the Pac together when they likely could be north of 35 mil in B12.

The PAC deal is rumored to be 30m. How would teams leaving the PAC and going to the Big 12 up the Big 12 to 35m? Seems like adding PAC teams would get the Big 12 to somewhere between current value and 30m(but not over 30).
