RE: Scott Carter Resigns as AD
No doubt ETSU is in a big hole as Carter makes his exit... but, call me crazy, I think this is an attractive spot for an AD. Good facilities overall, a stable conference, and the fans will clearly turn out for a winner in football and hoops. Assuming Sander is just a caretaker, I would not be shocked to see some really good candidates take an interest in ETSU.

What is the role of a mid-major AD these days? My guess, Sander will hire good. But good today can mean gone tomorrow for a mid-major AD. If Sander is willing - but his age? If not, hope he stabilizes things and takes the necessary time to hand it over to a hire who will seamlessly go forward. We obviously don’t need some flash in the pan just passing through.

ETSU "quietly" appointed Jackie Alexander as acting head coach of the women's team. My opinion, but "quietly" is not a good strategy. Didn't we just learn that lesson?

They yanked Harris off before the tweet finished loading, they did this and the men's roster hasn't been updated in a while...

ETSU has to be an attractive job, despite the issues that we have had. However, to me the attractiveness of the job would hinge on whether the university would allow the AD to be as transparent about the program as Doc was before Carter took over. The university needs a leader in this position more so than a PR person, and one who is willing to prioritize hiring people who will do things the right way.

Raise money.

Not being critical, just asking for your thoughts. What does ETSU Athletics have to offer medium to large donors?

I wouldn't be too upset about someone using ETSU as a career step. Depending on where they go, that can add appeal to the position that makes it easy to replace them with another quality candidate when they do leave.

But the role of a mid-major AD is the same as it has always been: fundraise your ass off, make great hires, and be prepared to make more when you inevitably lose good people to bigger schools. That's not just coaches, either. And above all, when the **** hits the fan, show leadership in a crisis.

'Fund raise your ass off', Raise money'.

If you were the AD of ETSU list the top 5 five incentives you would offer a major prospective donor.

As I said in an earlier post, I'm not being critical, just interested in your thoughts of where ETSU is falling short in their fund raising efforts.

Are we falling short of fundraising compared to our peers? I've never thought of the lack of money/budget to be a problem for ETSU considering our level.

None of us are saying ETSU is falling short on fundraising per se. I'd be hard pressed to say it's in worse shape than it was 15 years ago. But there is always more to be done, more opportunities to give people reasons to give more money to the school.

The big one I would hit is access. Donors want to feel like they're part of something and that they're getting something in return for their money. Tickets are valuable, sure, but things like donor events centered around practices where boosters can interact with coaches could be really valuable. Donors pay for scholarships, too, so an event where they can sit down and get to know the athletes their money helps come to ETSU could be good, too, if ETSU doesn't already do that. Then stack things like silent auctions on top of those events to get additional money coming in from donors. Maybe auction off additional access, like calling a play in the spring game or the chance to sit in with the radio or TV crew for a game.

Another thing I would do is organize special events for donors built around games. Organize a donor charter to Starkville for Mississippi State, or get an exclusive bus with amenities for the games at App game in 2024 that lets people travel to support the team in style and comfort that reflects their level of support for ETSU.

ETSU athletics will never be self-sufficient; the TV money will never be there, and tickets and donations can't make up all of that gap. But every dollar raised means the general fund support and/or student fees can stretch that little bit further, tipping the scale on the athlete experience (hotels, meals, etc) and staff recruitment and retention (assistant pools, etc). Those things ultimately lead to more wins, which will get more donors on board, which build forward momentum for the department and ultimately lead to sustained success.

These are some very creative suggestions. Does anybody know the size of the ETSU athletic budget and the amount each revenue source contributes to it?
