Correct. I doubt the MWC would be interested in Tulane.

Explain to him/her/it how everything about the university sucks. The president, AD, academics, sports programs, coaches, stadium, fans. It might take he/she/it time to figure out that he/she/it needs to hate everything about the school if he/she/it wants to be a true fan. It might be an adjustment for he/she/it to only be miserable and negative about the school and its athletic programs and not miserable and negative about everything in life.

We know you will try.

The new AAC still has teams in 6 of the top 20 TV markets. The MWC 1.

If anything, the OPs idea is a bit premature, but the landscape may change dramatically over time. The odds might be better for a Best of The Rest conference comprised of (For Example):

USF
ECU
Temple
Tulane
SMU
UM

SDSU
Fresno
Boise
Colo ST
Air Force
Tulsa

Something like that conf is about the best that Memphis fans can hope for. Might could even add Army and UAB to the east division and UNLV and Navy to the west and it’s not a bad league. That’s 16 football and 14 basketball with Wichita mirroring Navy.

CCG football game and basketball tournament in Vegas

I could see something similar to this happening if the PAC extends an invitation to SDSU which seems possible. That might push Boise toward the AAC and in that case I could see Colorado St and Air Force changing their minds as well. I can't help but believe that our recent announcement of two football series with Boise hints that a great many discussions of potential alliances are going on behind the scenes.

And? They are commuter schools with zero history or following. Being in a metro area does not make a school relevant in college football. That's a flawed plan to build a conference. I fail to see the fascination with the schools we added. The biggest conference in college football does not have a single school in a top 20 market.

isn't that a decision to be made by the folks paying us (aka ESPN)?

...or not paying us very much in the future. And if that happens I think the AAC leadership (commissioner, school presidents & ADs) will be shown to have made the wrong decision in the adds made. IMO, it should have been those schools that are building winning programs & would have included a couple of SB schools instead of 2-3 that were invited, to truly eliminate the SB from a growing recognition.

You don't leave the AAC for the MWC. I would be open to a merger though. Our top 8 and their top 8. East-West divisions. Non-rev sports play mostly within division. Football rotates through the league.

But leave for the MWC? You pay an exit fee to get less tv revenue and be seen in fewer households, while abandoning your recruiting footprint. Pass.

I wouldn't leave the AAC for the MWC either. When TCU did it, it was a different time and TCU seemed to always upgrade, finally going P6 in the Big East then the Big 12.

Thinking outside the box. Why not go unconventional and create a basketball heavy conference? The conference could still work to grow football.

East:
Memphis
Duke
Kansas
Louisville
Miami
Syracuse
WVU
SMU
FSU

West:
Arizona
Texas Tech
Baylor
TCU
Iowa State
UNLV
San Diego St
Colorado St
Oregon

This isn't an all-out bball conference, a la Big East. There are a ton of teams that can compete (and are competing) in football too: Memphis, Duke, Louisville, Miami, WVU, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, Iowa St, SMU, Oregon.

I understand that it isn't this simple, but fun to spitball. And it would be fun to be connected with all these teams, many of which Memphis has been in conference with before! This group has reason to belong in all sports.

That's not how you do it. You go to ESPN with a proposal. "If we and a few choice other teams leave the AAC and join the Mountain West, will you make it worth our while?"

I like this better. This is a great conference. Great idea!
(I'd just as soon see a strike through SDSU as UNLV, but either way...)

Aresco REALLY messed up with the additions of FAU, North Texas, Rice, Charlotte, and UTSA. He should not been that aggressive.

With the subtractions of UCF, Houston, and Cincy...the AAC was at 8 teams. They should have added UAB only to go to 9 teams and waited.

A full merger with MWC would have been best for the individual schools. It would have looked like this...

East: Memphis, Tulane, USF, Temple, East Carolina, UAB, Navy
Central: Air Force, CSU, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah St., SMU, Tulsa,
West: SDSU, San Jose St, Hawaii, Nevada, Fresno, Boise, UNLV.

That would have been a much better overall conference instead of adding to the bottom schools to AAC.

our TV contract is for X number of games plus a conference championship game. Staying at 9 would probably void our contract.

I still don't understand the schools we selected. The whole "metro" thing is flawed. I don't believe for a moment that ESPN picked them. I know they have done some boneheaded things lately but they are not that stupid. No that was the AAC's panicked idea when the MW schools said no. You would think there was one person in the room talking them off the cliff. UNCC...nooo you have to be kidding me.
