2023 New Big 12 Recruiting Rankings
After UCF's HUGE get yesterday, landing their highest rated recruit in program history (minus Daunte Culpepper...when most rating systems didn't exist), UCF now has an average star rating of 89.55 as 43% of UCF's current small class are 4 star rated or higher recruits.
Here's how the New Big 12 Recruiting Rankings are at this time in regards to average star rating:
1) UCF: 89.55
2) Baylor: 88.09
3) Cincinnati: 87.61
4) TCU: 87.52
5) Texas Tech: 87.33
6) Oklahoma State 87.00
7) WVU: 86.87
8) Kansas State: 86.23
Iowa State: 86.03
Kansas: 84.98
Houston: 84.96
BYU: 84.53
NOTE: If you include the 2 teams leaving the Big 12:
#1 as of now would be Texas at 91.82 and OU at #2 91.61
Some schools have almost maxed out their class with mostly 3 star recruits so less chance to move up...while those going after BIG Fish have a better chance to move up the average star ratings.

What I really love is that our class is almost all DL/OL/LBs. After three years of Huep and a season of catastrophic injuries last year, we haven't had good line play in a while.

It is way too early to compare recruiting classes. Wait until the classes are at least close to filled for everyone. A week ago cincy was at #4 in the country one week later they sit a 14 and if you look below them they likely finish 23 to 30. Which is a very good class. If you look at average player rankings everyone is sitting pretty close right now. My guess is at the end of the day they will run from high 20's to mid 40's, with 2 or 3 lagging behind. I think it will take 2 to 4 years but this will end up a very competitive conference top to near the bottom.

It's the transfers (in and out) that are more important than recruits in this day and age. Recruits are still important from a developmental standpoint. But the Five and Four Star players that refuse to wait more than one year to start with big-name programs will be the players to pursue.
On a side note, UTEP's Dana Dimel realized the Juco players are being overlooked with the focus on the transfer portal and has found the pot of gold for UTEP. He's earned a contract extension for this discovery - the first time for Dana as a head coach.

Not every team/coach agrees with that statement. Coach Fickell has said many times on record that he will continue to build his team through high school players and then use the portal to select a special player here & there, but only if there is an immediate need on the team for that position.

No doubt the free transfer portal has changed the game...most teams will still fill probably at least 60% or more of annual incoming players thru the HS ranks.

They might as well rename the transfer portal the 'free agent market.'

Cincy has taken 2-6 since Fickell's been here so not for us.
