Coach Cignetti gives zero damns
The Dukes are predicted to finish at the bottom of the SBC East, and Coach Cignetti is like, whatever.

RE: Coach Cignetti gives zero damns
Nice article, thanks.

We have a lot of question marks about how we stack up this year, but I don't think anyone from the coaches to players or fans will be satisfied with 6th place in SB east.

Lots of fun and battles ahead. Eagerly awaiting Sep 3.

I mean, if you weren't a JMU fan, what would you think? New team moving up from FCS? Of course you keep expectations low. It's just one year, first one in the league, and it's all about finding your level anyhow.

Not a JMU fan so I will take a shot at it. 6th place wouldn’t surprise me because I don’t think that you have the depth to overcome the grind. Like Cignetti said, this is a step up where you will need your A game each week, where in the past you could get away with a win with your C game. You Amy have 85 guys, but do you have 85 FBs guys? I think 5th is your ceiling. Not that you are a bad team, but any of App, Marshall, Coastal, or Georgia St could realistically win the division. Those four are definitely better than JMU.

Bullsh!t.

I am so sick of hearing about the "grind" crap regarding the reportedly insurmountable lack of depth we will be faced with because we are inferior to our badass conference mates who will destroy us with their depth.

I ain't buying it! We have historically had many FBS transfers who couldn't crack our starting lineup and we are and have been winning recruiting battles against FBS schools. We are extremely deep at some very important places, like RB and OL.

Just like every team in the division, we are going to play our best and sub them with our second-best. We are going to see what combinations gel, just like every other team in the conference.

I promise you our 2- and 3-deep guys are not unheralded, nor did they choose JMU because they didn't have solid offers elsewhere.

So, think what you want. I don't believe there is a team in our division that we won't play toe to toe with, including Ape State!

Not gonna lie.... I'd be really happy if we managed to finish 4th this year. But that's just me.

I guess we will find out. Sorry to get your blood pressure up.

App has had P5 guys transfer in that couldn’t crack our starting lineup either. You know why? Because they weren’t really P5 guys to begin with and their work ethic showed that they weren’t much more than depth guys at the FCS level. I understand your rationale, but what you have at JMU isn’t a unique case with transfers. Your coach even said that you have holes that need to filled in camp. I have no doubt that you will come to play each week. You will need to.

One thing to add in our favor...all three guys are accustomed to playing 14+ games with the hardest 3 or 4 at the very end of a long season... Could make a difference between 4th and 6th

RE: Coach Cignetti gives zero damns
Don't forget some of our players played in the Spring and Fall last year.
Appst94, I don't take anything you said personally, but I do find it interesting as your team didn't just show up, they competed from year 1 in the FBS. How many people said similar things about your school. "Not ready", "the weekly grind" "true FBS players". It was frustrating, wasn't it?
We got lucky in that the COVID year allowed us more scholarships which will help us in this transition year.
We were already beating out FBS schools for players, so I don't think there's a huge gap of talent that we are having to overcome.
But like many said, we are going to find out. I am trying to keep my expectations low, while my hype level is at an all time high.
Lot of respect for App State. I really want to beat you guys though. 03-wink
We're coming for ya. Not a matter of "if" but "when".

Cig may not give a hoot about ranking but I hope has given a damn about the O-line or who the QB or RBs are won't matter

He had an interview with Riggert and was asked about the line. It certainly sounds like he gives a damn.
He did not seem quite sure about who was going to be exactly where, but it sounds like there is a lot of depth at Oline. I believe he mentioned one guy dealing with an injury (cannot recall who). He said good things about the Liberty transfer and believes he'll play a role for sure.

I’m not wishing anything but success for JMU. I’m happy to finally have them at the FBS level. Rising tides lift all boats. Except for Southern and Coastal. Those mofos can sink into the abyss. (I kid, sort of). Anyways, while your point is taken about App’s success entering the league, this isn’t the same league the App joined. You have Marshall and ODU, where App had NMSU and Idaho.

The one area where I find a great deal of similarity between App and JMU is the culture. I’m very impressed with Cignetti and his standards and how his players have bought in.

My comment still stands about depth. You are loaded with an 85 man roster, well 80. But they all weren’t recruited to play FBS football. Just like you cringe at statements about “the grind”, I shake my head when fans talk about beating out “FBS or P5 schools” for recruits. Having an offer from a Virginia or Virginia Tech doesn’t make them a legit P5 or FBS player. Hell, if that’s the case, 90% of App’s roster has P5 caliber players. You just got a commit from a guy with no FBS offers. Does that make him a project or a bad commit? Of course not.

So back to my original post. Do you have the horses to compete with App, Coastal, Ga St and Marshall for 4 qtr? We will see. Coastal will be a very good measuring stick as to the quality of your depth. They are replacing 9 starters on defense and most of their offense. So we will see how the depth of each team measures up.

Sorry for the long post. I am happy to have you guys here.

It's all good. I definitely agree that JMU is going through an absolute gauntlet. The Sun Belt has improved significantly since App State joined (and App State is one of the reasons for that improvement).
I don't know about record, but I do agree with Cignetti in that we will be competitive. I do believe we'll surprise some people. Whether that results in wins... time will tell.
The part I'm excited about is that we absolutely will get answers. It's been speculation for years that our team was closer to an FBS team than FCS. Now we will finally get the opportunity to find out.

I’m not worried that you won’t compete, or be competitive. Look at this year as, “You don’t lose. You either win, or learn.”

JMU could win 1 game this season (Norfolk) or 11. Regardless of the final record, this season is a “win” because JMU is now playing in a conference with peers (and on ESPN no less) that’s only going to get better. The future is exceedingly bright for the SBC…and what do they say? Don’t look directly at the Sun, it will blind you.

All the concern about JMU’s depth, however, is malarky. The only concern is the OL. If the OL gels and stays healthy I anticipate a winning season record, something like 7-4 or 6-5.

Just make sure you don’t call 6-7 wins “huge”. Calling anything huge would require someone to get on a high horse and get real pedantic for seemingly no reason than to fight with someone on the internet. (Probably because they miss arguing and condescending to students in their classroom)
