JMU Day at Nats Park July 30 2022
Got an Email from the Nats yesterday saying the the annual JMU Day at Nats park is scheduled for Saturday July 30 2022 in a 7:15 night fame against the St Louis Cardinals. First 1500 fans who purchase the special JMU Day ticket will also received a neat Nats/JMU hat which I have gotten previously. Purchased two tickets for the wife and I so we are good to go. It is a bit hard to find the section with the College Game days on the Nats site but it is there so if you are interested in going to the game and picking up a hat I would get some tickets ordered sooner rather than later.

Go Dukes!!

Aside from last year we always seem to have horrible luck with the date of JMU day, unfortunately I'm gonna be out of town for this one. Hope everyone that goes has a great time!

A Nats win on National TV - I was tuning in and out, but didn't see any mention of JMU. They were too busy showing Cardinal highlights and Expos jersey's.

Was a fun evening at the game. Fair number of Dukes fans but way to many Cardinals fans. Duke Dawg got to throw out the first pitch and he chucked it in from the mound and didn't bounce it but to quote Bob Ueker from Major League "Just a bit outside". Back and forth game for most of the night but the Nats held on for a 7-6 win.

Picked up the JMU hat and they were handing out leftover Screech bobbleheads from 2020 so the wife and I snagged a couple more of them.

Nice night for a ballgame and a Nats win, a good night overall.

It would be nice if they had one section for JMU to take over instead of scattering the seating options all over the park.

Actually the first time or two they had JMU night they did have one section. A couple years ago they spread the JMU tickets out over multiple sections. Do not know why it changed.

There were always way too many Cards fans even when the Nats were good. So is the life of DC sports. Makes me concerned that new ownership will have no excuse to spend money when they know more than half of their home games will bring in plenty of fans regardless of how good the home team is.

People love to give the Lerners crap for not paying to keep Harper, Rendon, Turner, Soto...but they did actually try and went over the luxury tax once to build a championship team.

Unfortunately, with the Strasburg and Corbin horrendous contracts ($31M/year until 2030), the Scherzer deferred money ($15M/year until 2028) and the sorry state of the farm system, it may be quite some time before new ownership is willing to spend to win (if they ever actually do). The 2020s are shaping up to be a very rough decade for DC baseball.

EDIT: To make matters even worse, the new MLB draft lottery doesn't guarantee the Nats get top pick in the 2023 draft (only 16.5% chance) and can finish as low as 6th even. Plus, not being a revenue-sharing recipient, they won't be able to pick higher than 7th in 2024 and then higher than 10th in 2025 (unless they finish better then 6th worst in the league in either 2023 or 2024...also unlikely at current trajectory).

Start the day as the worst team in baseball with the 24th ranked farm system and end the day as the worst team in baseball with the 8th ranked farm system.

Bottom line is Bell goes to FA regardless at the end of the season, almost certainly wouldn't sign with the Nats. Soto also goes to FA after 2024 and likely wouldn't sign with the Nats. I do think he got lowballed a bit on his offer, but he made it clear there wouldn't be a home town discount deal like Tatis/Acuna. Prospects don't always pan out but they got a nice haul from the Padres.

Nats still got a ring from their outstanding 2010s decade...more than the Mariners (late 90s/early 00s), Mets (mid 00s) and Tigers (early 10s) can say.

My biggest issue is why throw Bell into that trade? I would have preferred to see Bell separated to get a better view of the haul for just Soto, but that's just so I can feel better about losing such an exciting player.

He is walking at the end of the year and it was probably to offset the 1B/DH going back to DC. The Nats did well here and can start that rebuild much quicker. They got some good pieces to build on for one guy leaving at the end of the year and the other that turned down a ridiculous amount of money. And I’m sure things were said in the negotiations that made it clear he wasn’t going to stick around regardless of the money. They did them a favor, because with a contract of that size you wouldn’t be able to put a complete and competitive roster around him. Feel blessed you got one title, like mentioned earlier many great squads don’t get that.

I don't think he got lowballed- it was the richest overall offer ever, and IIRC only Scherzer's average per year exceeded it. It wasn't what he'll end up getting, but to establish that you have to get a counter, and Rizzo said (and knowing how Boras operates, i've no reason to doubt him) that they never received one. I agree that could be interpreted as Soto thinking it was too low to merit a reply, but I've never agreed with the sentiment that "how do you turn that much down"? You turn it down when a bidding war can get you a lot more. Going to free agency ups both his prospective salary and his opportunity to play on a team that has a chance at the postseason the next few years.

What they got back for Soto makes sense, but having to toss Bell in to ensure they got Hosner or Voit deal doesn't. That makes it feel to me more like he was added because he was the only piece they had San Diego would take to ensure the deal went through this year. That also helps point out that this deal and Adrianza were the only ones that happened this year. They shouldn't have just shedded, they should have purged.

RE: JMU Day at Nats Park July 30 2022
I hope it works out, it sucks to see them constantly lose/trade fan favorites though. As someone who isn't the biggest baseball fan but likes the Nats, a star and personality like Soto definitely makes me want to watch and go to more games. I've watched and gone to more games during Soto's career than the rest of the Nats' existence, and I'd imagine that would make an even bigger difference for people that live closer and if they got him signed to a big extension. The Lerners complain about attendance but then every time the fans fall in love with a player he's gone. Imagine what Capitals attendance might look like today if they had traded Ovi at 23 years old.
