I don't say this to be disrespectful, but I honestly do not believe ESPN cares who the Sun Belt...or honestly, any G5 or FCS league, add.

Well the poster says the Sun Belt wants "complete" athletic departments when its clear they want football schools. They are the weakest of the FBS conferences overall outside football.

Maybe pre-2022 expansion. They've certainly done well with their 4 additions.

Basketball Bids (last bid) for Current Members

12 - Old Dominion (2019)
8 - South Alabama (2008)
7 - UL Monroe (1996)
6 - Georgia St (2022), UL Lafayette (2014)
5 - James Madison (2013), Marshall (2018)
4 - Coastal Carolina (2015)
3 - Appalachian St (2021), Georgia Southern (1992), Southern Miss (2012)
2 - Texas St (1997), Troy (2017)
1 - Arkansas St (1999)

The 4 new schools combine for over 37% of all the NCAA bids the current schools in the Sun Belt have earned.

All-Time National Championships for Current Members

10 - Old Dominion
6 - Georgia Southern
5 - James Madison
3 - Appalachian St, Marshall
1 - Coastal Carolina, UL Monroe

50% of the Sun Belt schools have won a NCAA national championship. 3/4 of the new additions have won national titles. In fact, only 1 of the 7 schools listed above was a member of the Sun Belt prior to 2014.

Sun Belt States:
Retained from Prior - Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana
2010s - Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas
2020s - Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia

The conference has made great strides in the last couple rounds of realignment.

CUSA had much of what SBC MSOC will be, it didn't have much impact to the overall scheme of things.

I don’t think we’ll add for the sake of adding. Everyone seems pretty happy with the two divisions we currently have. If the AAC implodes there may be an opportunity there to pick up schools or if down the road it makes sense to go to 16 then the schools you listed would likely be available. There’s no real urgency though.

None of the above, which is why none of the above are in the Sun Belt.

Quote:Gill was asked whether or not the Sun Belt had plans to expand. Gill's immediate response was that there was no active plan, but it wasn't something that the conference had ruled out and even expressed the possibility of the Sun Belt growing to as many as 20 teams.

"I wouldn't take anything off the table," Gill said. "We are not looking at a number. We are looking at value. I think if somebody asked me last year what is the right number I would have said 12. However, when you have the opportunity to add the four quality schools that we do, then 14 becomes the right number. I think the same with 16 or 20.

I think ESPN is behind their growth to be 14 or more.

WKU
MTSU
FIU
La. Tech
Chattanooga
Sam Houston State

Could be the next targets.

None of those teams garner more money from ESPN.

It has, especially in football, but its still the weakest in overall sports of the FBS. In 2014, it really wouldn't have been an especially strong FCS conference.

Again, you mean basketball. In baseball we’ll likely be the 5th or 6th best league. In MSOC the 2nd or 3rd. That’s of all DIV I conferences

Good thing that's almost a decade ago. Thr current SBC is probably a top 5-6 in baseball, softball, soccer, and will be in the mix for the access bowl as well. Basketball is a current project now that FB has improved and baseball is better than ever.

Ooofff. Matt usually doesn't call anyone out other than DavidSt.

Not sure I was saying ESPN cares about conference makeup per se, but I do believe, with conviction, that ESPN does have a hoarding issue when it comes to inventory and knows what fanbase will purchase their streaming products.

Just reshuffling chairs. Both AAC and SBC now have 14 members each.

If the AAC had taken, say Ga State instead of Charlotte, and then the SBC added Charlotte along with the others, it makes ZERO difference to ESPN.

Both conferences were working from the same basic pool (C-USA) for expansion. How the shuffle ended up was of little concern to ESPN.

CUSA had much of what SBC MSOC will be, it didn't have much impact to the overall scheme of things.

Marshall MSOC won the National Championship 2 years ago

I was there and watched much of that in person. My point was it didn't change the overall reputation of CUSA as a whole...unfortunately did not move the needle.

Again wasn't my point so I'll reiterate; I feel ESPN wants WKU. I say that for a few reasons. Those that I expressed and for others. WKU was apart of several conference makeup scenarios the SBC brought to ESPN to make sure thr pie slices didn't get smaller. Then the MAC also made a tentative move on WKU with ESPN's blessing.

ESPN is a-okay with paying around $2 mil for WKU's fandome's money.

Look if you mean the SB needs work in mens and womens basketball just say that. You’re talking out both sides of your mouth.

SBC wants complete athletic depts.

1+1=2

I don't say this to be disrespectful, but I honestly do not believe ESPN cares who the Sun Belt...or honestly, any G5 or FCS league, add.

Well the poster says the Sun Belt wants "complete" athletic departments when its clear they want football schools. They are the weakest of the FBS conferences overall outside football.

Maybe pre-2022 expansion. They've certainly done well with their 4 additions.

Basketball Bids (last bid) for Current Members

12 - Old Dominion (2019)
8 - South Alabama (2008)
7 - UL Monroe (1996)
6 - Georgia St (2022), UL Lafayette (2014)
5 - James Madison (2013), Marshall (2018)
4 - Coastal Carolina (2015)
3 - Appalachian St (2021), Georgia Southern (1992), Southern Miss (2012)
2 - Texas St (1997), Troy (2017)
1 - Arkansas St (1999)

The 4 new schools combine for over 37% of all the NCAA bids the current schools in the Sun Belt have earned.

All-Time National Championships for Current Members

10 - Old Dominion
6 - Georgia Southern
5 - James Madison
3 - Appalachian St, Marshall
1 - Coastal Carolina, UL Monroe

50% of the Sun Belt schools have won a NCAA national championship. 3/4 of the new additions have won national titles. In fact, only 1 of the 7 schools listed above was a member of the Sun Belt prior to 2014.

Sun Belt States:
Retained from Prior - Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana
2010s - Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas
2020s - Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia

The conference has made great strides in the last couple rounds of realignment.

It has, especially in football, but its still the weakest in overall sports of the FBS. In 2014, it really wouldn't have been an especially strong FCS conference.

??? who cares about 8 years ago.

We need to work on basketball, but its still been ~CUSA level the last 5 years.

nothing moves the needle except football and a little MBB. Still having a D1 NC is nice. I highly wish we would baseball (terrible and boring sport that is not conducive AT ALL to our climate) and bring back MSOC, even though MLS academy is going to take a lot of talent that used to go D1.

Actually, Marshall has 4 National Championships. We won the NAIA Natty in MBB in 1947

It'll be ECU and USF and eventually we'll have to replace ULM bc they won't be able to meet the financial obligations of FBS so we'll snag UAB. Yup.
