I don't say this to be disrespectful, but I honestly do not believe ESPN cares who the Sun Belt...or honestly, any G5 or FCS league, add.

There was a common thought floating around that the AAC couldn't add Sun Belt schools last year, because it would limit ESPN's ability to add new schools to their inventory.

Is there any truth to that? Or was the AAC simply not able to attract Sun Belt schools in 2021?

Maybe from an overall corporate strategy or C level position no. Since all the G5 contracts put together are going to be worth about 2 Big 10 teams payout, but htats still a couple hundred MM/year. That ain't chump change, even to ESPN. THeres still several layers of management that are going to care.

My boss doesn't care about any of my customers under a certain financial threshold, but I still do.

It could be that the AAC was just sticking with the bigger markets idea. That also blocked the MWC out of any big Texas markets. Not saying that was a good idea, just that they may have thought so.

Hopefully but CUSA would just reload with NAIA teams. They have no shame.

"I wouldn't take anything off the table," Gill said. "We are not looking at a number. We are looking at value. I think if somebody asked me last year what is the right number I would have said 12. However, when you have the opportunity to add the four quality schools that we do, then 14 becomes the right number. I think the same with 16 or 20.

I think ESPN is behind their growth to be 14 or more.

WKU
MTSU
FIU
La. Tech
Chattanooga
Sam Houston State

Could be the next targets.

I would be surprised if FIU is included for the sole reason that they are technically a FBS team.

The reports are saying a 16 team playoffs for the champs of all 10 conferences and 6 at large bids.

Uhhh, with all due respect Mr. St that will not happen.

We're not gonna have the 4th- or 5th-place finisher in 24-team SEC or B1G miss the playoffs with a 10-2 or 9-3 record while Western Kentucky collects an automatic berth by winning C-USA.

Likelier scenario, IMO, if the playoff starts with 16 teams: A play-in game (or even two play-in games) between the lowest rated champions of the lower-tier conferences like C-USA, the MAC, etc.

Essentially, a version of what we see on the first Tuesday/Wednesday of March Madness except for the football play-in game would be the week before the playoffs begin

Yeah they can't possibly allow this. TV will be so pissed when they are forced to air a 70 point win over a 6-6 G5 champ.

Looking at the conference map to me it feels like adding another Texas school, Missouri State, WKU and getting a Florida school completes the league

No real pressure to do anything quickly.

Makes sense to wait and see what happens to the AAC. If it falls apart because of any of the Middle 3 having big defections you might can convince a team or two from there to make a switch. If it doesn’t any C-USA or FCS team we might be interested will still be there.

The AAC wanted schools that were willing to invest at a certain level with the budgets to support it. They found those schools.

They also took markets into consideration, which does make a difference to advertisers. In a few year’s time, subscriber streaming may rule the day.

We’ll see what happens but for now, I don’t think we’ll see any AAC programs leave for the Belt unless more defections occur and they are left with no better option… and this is not a slight to the Sunbelt. No legacy AAC members are leaving $7M payouts to make $2M and none of the new members will leave for $2M when they will be making $3.5M.

I do like the Belt and wish y’all all the best unless you’re playing ECU or another AAC team.

...well, sounds great, but... only if the ACC is still more or less what it is now, or at least 75% of current membership...

I'm leaning toward the 'guts' of the remaining PAC being 'absorbed' by the B1G and BIG12, and the 'remnants' join up with the MWC (perhaps retain the PAC moniker - or 'combine' ...'PAMWC'? 03-drunk) -

THEN, the B1G and SEC (and perhaps the BIG XII for Pitt/UL) get enough ACC schools to leave-voting to dissolve the GoR (with much assistance from ESPN, of course), and the 'remnants' of the ACC join up with the AAC (becoming the AACC, perhaps? 03-drunk)

...NEXT, the newly formed PAMWC and AACC merge into a mondo 'Gx' conference... PAMAACCWC 03-drunk03-drunk03-drunk

FINALLY, the SBC, MAC, and C-USA all merge in some fashion to form ANOTHER mondo 'Gx' conference... here goes - MACUSASBC 03-drunk03-drunk03-drunk03-drunk03-drunk

SO... left with FIVE Division IA (the 'FBS'-'FCS' monikers need to croak 04-chairshot) conferences -
SEC
B1G
BIGXII
PAMAACCWC
MACUSASBC

...all with 24-ish teams (24x5 = 120) ...so 10 or so programs will need to scramble to remain DI... of course, ND and the other indies can exist as-is, if they so desire...

That's it... ALL realignment boards/threads can be CLOSED - I've COMPLETED the final permutation for y'all!!! 03-drunk03-drunk03-drunk03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao02-13-banana02-13-banana02-13-banana

I don't have any reason to believe that ESPN dictated who the AAC actually added by any means.

I'm finding it hard to see how any of the CUSA callups outside of UNT and Rice (if they want to) get above $40MM in total budget. Even if the rumored $7/$3.5MM arrangement is true, which I harbor some doubts on. Maybe UNCC can eek out over $40 since they are at 37 now and will presumably get an extra $3MM or so.

I think everyone agrees that for the SBC to make a play on AAC teams, SMU/Memphis/USF are all gone. Maybe Navy too.

Well the poster says the Sun Belt wants "complete" athletic departments when its clear they want football schools. They are the weakest of the FBS conferences overall outside football.

That's not really true. In Men's Basketball? Yeah, probably. But this is now an elite men's soccer conference, and a much better baseball and softball league than the MAC

By outside football do you mean basketball? Because we’ll have one of the top MSOC & baseball conferences in the country. Two top 25 softball programs in ULL & JMU.
