Hey, they didn't pick Toledo to win the west. This must be our year.

Many of them still picked you all. NIU was picked by 2 points and you all were 2nd overall pick to win the MAC.

West is a crap shoot again. I feel anyone can win it and even EMU has a legit shot. My Huskies probably have too big of a target on them to catch magic two years in a row. You have to be really good. CMU had better people coming back last year and didn't make it, they were loaded. We only beat them because their center rolled the snap back on the winning FG attempt.

I think any of the top 3 projected West teams in this poll would most likely win the East.

I'm not at all confident in what Toledo will have on the field. Just went through their recruits and what they lost to graduation or transfers - followed by what they picked up in transfers. Toledo lost 17 guys through the portal, and picked up 6. What is concerning about the ones that left is this - 13 of them have not landed at another school, and will likely end up at FCS schools (or lower) - or no longer will play. The others ended up at Arkansas (Landers -1 yr left), Wisconsin (J. Clark - 1 yr. left), East Carolina (Winstead -1 yr. left) and South Alabama (Bradley - 2yrs. left). We recruit and sign a guy like Andrew Vaught. He's listed as a 3-star recruit, but the only others offering were Norfolk State, Fordham, Long Island, Eastern Kentucky (no comment), VMI, Monmouth, New Hampshire, and Morgan State. He was an OL. Seems to provide some proof that we are not going after guys that can be competitive in the MAC on the OL. Vaught is listed at 6-5, 275 so size should not have been an issue. He was from Roanoke, Va. so I have no idea the level of competition he faced. I'm not sure if it is good news or not - but he was the only OL to transfer out. Also see that Cornell Ford is no longer listed as a coach and read that he left the team after the Bahamas Bowl. Not sure what happened there.

Vaught transferred to Wofford (to be closer to home?). Also, if you are using 247's transfer portal as a reference, they have lots of incomplete info. Will post all the roster updates below.

I can’t see how a coaching staff can keep a team balanced with the ncaa allowing the transfer portal to run like it does. Unbelievable!!!

The grass is always greener somewhere else. Most of the players that NIU lost through the transfer portal didn't end up anywhere of note either. Probably most of them saw the writing on the wall that they weren't going to play much. We did lose a few good players here and there, unfortunately - don't remember where they ended up, except Jay Ducker went to Memphis.

Thank you. This is helpful. I looked at the most recent roster and it shows we have 18 OL's, 3 are transfers into the program from Maryland, Air Force, and Edinboro.

Two more names have disappeared from the roster in the last week:
Luke Staaten
Alex Enders

Also, just realized there is another name missing: Trey Szykowny, LS, who was announced as a PWO at the early signing date in December.

Oh, and Justin Stephens has been moved from TE to OL this season. Last time I can recall that happening was Mike Ebert, and he turned out to be one of the better linemen on the team.

Another name has disappeared from the on-line roster: incoming FR S Roland McGhee Jr., who had signed an NLI.

Evan Davis should be on the list with the graduated players.
