RE: Top 25 All Time Tiger's Basketball Teams
I agree Keith Lee the best TIGER ever--and WOW how well coached---blocked shots he kept in bounds -usually swatted to a TIGER---never brought a rebound down--even offensive rebounds he would put the ball back-up without putting the ball on the floor ---but its hard to overlook a player the caliber of Kenon-------he has to be on the top 5 list somewhere --he averaged almost 21-17----before the shot clock

It was Lee and the coach's fault that we didn't win the national title in 1984. No excuses.

It was the fault of Dean Shaffer

I'm not pretending anything.
You say no excuses, it's the coach's fault that we didn't. We should have had the exact same team with or without Parks. You have repeated the same thing thousands of times. Yes or no Ole Piss fan?

1985 team might have been ranked #1 in the country going into the tourney if we dont get upset by Detroit, and if Turner wasnt absent for the game at Kansas that we still came back and almost won despite playing Boyd at PG. We would have at least been #2.. not that it would change much... maybe flip us and Oklahoma and we get a matchup with Karl Malone in the S16 instead of BC...
Regardless, that team had a terrible tournament despite making the F4. At one point was over 90% to lose to UAB.. pulled a miracle there. Keith just wasnt the same player that year either. Agree about Askew too... his conscious failure to make himself a threat was another killer. If 1983 Keith played on the 1985 team, the 85 team likely would win the championship if Kirk wanted it

He was always a great player, but gaining all of the weight made him much slower and much less explosive. Any argument about 1985 beating 2008 that includes Askew is just nonsense. He scored 7 total points in the last 4 games. How anyone can compare the two teams when Boston College and UAB were a coin flip at best, is beyond belief. 1985 was lethargic the entire tournament; no energy, no spark.

1985 team was one of the 5 best teams in 1985
2008 team may have been one of the 10 best teams since 1985.

I remember reading somebody's sports column which claimed ANY ONE of the teams of the 2008 Final Four would have won the championship in 2009.

I think what is misleading about 1985 is similar to 1996. They peaked early and were playing bad basketball by the time Detroit Mercy came along. I think big reasons for this were the lack of a shot clock and no 3 point line.
If both existed, I think the team would have been able to work through it in games with so many more possessions, and being more talented than everyone else. I got the sense during the tournament that the team was playing nervous on offense and defense, knowing that every team was going to slow it down and every possession was so important in low scoring games.
It was the same formula. Always playing close games, not getting anything from Askew, and having Lee in constant foul trouble. They muddled their way to the Final Four, thankfully playing a great game against Oklahoma when they really needed it. On paper we should have killed Villanova, but I wasn't surprised when we played like crap.
2008 was a much different animal. Aside from the Mississippi State scare; it didn't even look like the other teams were anywhere close to being at our same level. We could have beaten Michigan State and Texas by 30 if we felt like it, and we dominated UCLA.
1985 firing on all cylinders still wasn't as good as 2008, but it might have been sort of close. 1985 losing to Detroit Mercy and from that point onward was an above average team that managed to put it together when it counted against Oklahoma.
