Future College Playoffs
Interesting to hear both BigTen and SEC commissioners mentioning a 16 team playoff is being discussed.

Of course with the expansion of both their leagues, increasing CFP access is important to keep the money coming in.

I think we can expect, no guarantee spots in next deal with maybe up to 16 slots to top 16 schools and money being awarded for number of schools and how far they advance in playoffs, similar to NCAA basketball tournament, this will give those two the higher number of teams and money from playoffs.

They will probably have a flat rate of let’s say 2 million per team doubling the current 1 million payout to throw a bone to the rest of FBS

RE: Future College Playoffs
Truly a game changer if they would guarantee a spot for the top G5 winner.

Cincinnati pulled a miracle making the playoff as a top 4, we need a true path to get a team to the playoffs and this would be it.

It would give new meaning to the top G5 performers at the end of the season and create attention for us like never before.

I highly suspect that the ACC and PAC will be supportive next time around. ESPN will get their people in line.

Lets wait to see how it is handed out. Kinda figure the BIg 10 and SEC are gonna want at least 3 slots each.

SEC said they won't support auto bids for conferences. So it will be back to a subjective room full of people.

If it goes to 16, you can bet your eye teeth that 8 or more of them will be from the SEC and B10 every year.

I think 8 is low. I'd guess 10-12.

6 SEC, 6 B10, 1 B12, 1 ACC, 1 PAC and ND.

If it's based on rank only without any auto bids last year it would be

SEC - 4 (OU counted)
B10 - 4
B12 - 4 (BYU & Cincy counted)
PAC - 2
ACC - 1
INDY - 1

Honestly that's fair.

If they’re going to go to 16, than just go full FCS and take it to 24.

Maybe there is hope yet for all of us bottom feeders.

Keith Gill (SBC Commissioner) said today that they were still discussing the 6+6 model at the most recent meetings. If this reporting you mention is true, it likely means the G5 conferences are being shut out which is not good news for any of us.

Hell, why stop there, why not go to 48? 131? Independence for all!

Well a 16 team playoff with the top six conference champions would be a good move for the AAC

RE: Future College Playoffs
I doubt there will be auto bids now. It will just be the 16 top ranked teams.

RE: Future College Playoffs
One interesting note. It was only recently that "auto bids" was widely used to distinguish 5+1+6 model from 6+6. That is "auto bids" was used like BCS AQ that the five named conferences' champs got bids vs top six champs.
I haven't read full transcripts, but Sankey's quotes, not just reporting/ interpretation DOES sound like just top 12 (or top 16).
Just interesting.
SBC commish Gill did say 6+6 was the recent discussion.

I don't think there will be autobids as in the champion of conference X is always in, but I do think the top 4 to 6 conference champions should be in. Winning a conference should mean something.

If you want to keep the value of hosting a championship game then keeping the auto bids is the way to go. I read the BT commissioner mentioned the 16 spots with championship automatic bids.

We will have to wait and see what is the model coming out

ESPN owning the Sun Belt and American media rights might bode well for the G5. They likely want the 6+6 model with no specific AQ for Autonomous 5 conferences and they can push a team from American and SBC heavy on all their talk shows and air time. Could have a team from these in every year. We all know media hype is big on boosting rankings when done by people (AP, Coaches, CFP) and ESPN will want that 6th spot to be a team they own media rights to

I think you’re being a little optimistic, but that’s fine. I honestly wish they would just get rid of the rankings altogether. They don’t benefit us at all. If anything, they’re used against us to leverage their arguments in favor of P5 schools. There are no rankings in the NFL. All just based on records and head to head.

RE: Future College Playoffs
I tend to think it will go to 16. With the Big 10 and SEC accumulating properties, they will want to lock up the largest portion of the playoff possible.

I can see something like the top 6 conference champs, and then the next 10 ranked teams. Most years it will be basically 4 SEC, 4 Big 10, 2-3 Big 12, 1-3 PAC, 1-3 ACC and a G5 or 2.

For me, this is the best possible scenario for all involved. Still gives the G5 a shot and on years that we are amazing, a couple G5 could get in.
6 Conference champs and the top 10 ranked teams outside of the Champs gives the perfect balance between Access and performance.
