A Conference Champions Tournament. This tournament invites only the conference champions. No matter if the conference has 8 or 18 members. Conference champions and only conference champions (No independents) can participate. If it survived and eventually became as popular as the basketball tournament maybe some of the mega conferences would break up give more of their members a shot at the national title. And perhaps college football could reclaim some semblance of rationality.

Unorthodox is being kind. The idea is beyond dumb.

The thing the POWER 5/SEC BOOTLICKERS like the PRETENDER dont understand or just don't care -----is the rankings are skewed/biased against the little guys like the LIL ole MEMPHIS' and Miami Ohio' of the world . They view the world as pure. They can't comprehend that agendas do exist . The OP proposed a model . The PRETENDER being a ( SEC/POWER 5 bootlicking anti little guy -everybody gets a trophy proponent)----got pooched mouth because some of the good ole boy over ranked network ( THAT DIDN'T MEET THE OP'S model) didnt make the playoffs -------so the so-called power 5/SEC bootlickers want to CHANGE THE OP'S RULES to pacify the whiners ---------------------------------reminds me of a couple years ago when PRESEASON the BIG10 stated to qualify for BIG10 CHAMPIONSHIP that the big10 teams had to play a minimum amount of games ----------Ohio St didn't qualify ---they threw a fit/whined---the big10 then CHANGED THEIR OWN RULES--to satisfy the LIL DARLINGS ------thus SCREWING their other conference team --Minn ?--I think

RE: I have an unorthodox idea for how to save college football.
I’m trying to think of any playoff system that only has conference/division winners and no wildcard or at-large teams. Not thinking of one. You’ve got to allow for the possibility that more than one of the best teams are in the same conference.

I think the only way you get an auto bid for every FBS conference is a 16-team playoff which would allow for 6 at-large. Maybe if it consolidates into 8 conferences then you could have a 12-team playoff with 4 at-large. But I have my doubts whether the networks want to waste any airtime on Alabama stomping Kent State in a first round game or that the power programs want to trot their players out for an extra injury opportunity.

We get it. 18 out of the top 25 OUT of the playoff is what the fans want. The fans are BEGGING for that UTSA - Utah State playoff matchup, while Georgia plays Ohio State in the New Orleans Bowl. The fans are DEMANDING it. More Utah State, more Northern Illinois. If Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia or anyone else loses a game, they are OUT. Let 6 loss MAC and Sunbelt teams duke it out.

Inclusion, socialism, woke...Karl and the ponytail.

Karl and Ponytail are now apparently NCAA football power brokers, who have decision making powers over the actual schools, the fans that watch the games, and anyone with an IQ over 40.

NCAA POWER BROKERS ?-DECISION MAKING POWERS ?- Actually I considered your model/decision making powers superior ---the model that each and every conference in the entire world SEC/BIG10/ACC/BIG12/PAC10/PAC12/NBA/MLB/NFL/MSL/ABA/WFL/USFL/ etc etc etc---had MEMPHIS #2 on EVERYBODYS list only behind Cincinnati----and the BIG12 DECISION MAKERS would 100% not choose Houston.

PRETENDER--"MEMPHIS in--Houston out"
Big12 to the PRETENDER: Houston in--MEMPHIS out

You NEVER cease to amaze the entire board with your astonishing/incredible insight/acumen and decision making /the ability to evaluate all facts and come to an accurate prediction .

Rudd was told we were in...twice, backed up by others who were told the same thing.

You want Northern Illinois and UTSA in, and 18 of the top 25 out. You think that the MAC, CUSA, and Sunbelt should have the same number of playoff teams as the Big Ten, $EC, Big 12, and ACC.

That is your weirdo idea of who is deserving.

Pure trophy culture socialism Karl.

Oops that seems to have been an error on my part. That list should only include the irrational. Occasional snarkiness doesn't warrant that or most of us would be on list. Even those who believe George Washington's hair style is unworthy of a real man.

RE: I have an unorthodox idea for how to save college football.
Just to point it out - the OP's model gets us 3 of the top 4 teams in the country into the playoff. Only team screwed is Georgia, which would technically be replaced by Baylor. Otherwise, top four of the current playoff and top four of the OP's system are pretty close.

The only team screwed? 18 of the top 25 would be out. They were #1 in the country and lost 1 game.

Yes, but the point is a crazy idea on our message board and the actual system we are stuck with both came up with similar results. There was a real proposal for a 12 team playoff that was stupidly and stubbornly rejected by the powers that be. Now, it looks like what may replace our current stupid system could involve 2 superconferences and only a handful of teams with actual access to the playoff. If that is choice A, I would rather choose the OP's crazy option B

99% of the fans wouldn't. None of the schools wouldn't allow it.
