pretty much the same here, I did use the money i saved working in HS to go to UTMartin my freshman year but I was broke come May.

I spent the next semester @ Memphis St, then took a job in Nashville so I drove down to MTSU @ 4 nights a week for a year.

Got homesick and moved right off Campus (apts. across parking lot from garibaldi's 80-83) and took my last 85 semester hours/higher level classes at Memphis.

All in all my family has 5 degrees from there, will be 6 next May (and we have had 3 others members attend).

Not even close. Stanley Thompson. The “Southern MS” refers to living in Southern Mississippi.

Received my doctorate the last year of MSU. To my knowledge, I’m the only student who can make that claim. Had a class with Skip Wolf in undergrad. A class with Forest Arnold in graduate school. Love the Tigers.

Very cool stuff here!

Man. This is a really good thread. I have enjoyed reading all the comments and the why so many of us chose Memphis (State).

I grew up in midtown, near Crump Stadium and not far from the fairgrounds. I started going to MSU football in 1961, and started selling Cokes (bottles, in wooden cases, not straps) in 1963, just so I could see the games. I fell in LOVE with the teams and the school! I never got to go the fieldhouse or a game, but started going to the Coliseum to watch BB once it opened in 1964.

Graduated High School in 1968, and chose MSU. For me it was a no brainer. I got accepted at GT, both UT's, and other smaller but quality schools, but it was always going to our TIGERS!

GTG!

Did you happen to be an RA at Richardson Towers? I lived there my frosh year, and had an RA with a similar nickname as yours. He was also on a long-term graduation plan.

RE: What made you go to Memphis State / University of Memphis?
My parents could not afford to send me to college.
Was raised in Clearwater, FL so attended St. Petersburg JC part time carrying 9 hours a semester (ranked #5 JC in US at the time and about 15 minutes from the beach and the famous SPJC social club beach parties) and worked for 5 years saving money and investing it in stocks, mainly Texas Instruments and Polaroid. Stocks doubled in value. Spend 6 months active duty in Army Reserve. After 5 years saved a bunch of money and thought I was going to Florida State but....I was 3 hours short of my Associate's Degree and FSU Admissions wanted me to get that before transferring to FSU. That meant another 9 month's wait before transferring. So, I shopped for another university. I had SPJC friends going to UT Dental School who loved Memphis and offered to put me up at LAUDERDALE COURTS where they were staying. So, I applied at Memphis State. Got accepted and even increased my GPA by .7 since Memphis just took the highest grade on repeat courses while SPJC averaged all grades to get GPA. Knew no one at MSU and had the university recommend off-campus housing (on Spottswood) with 2 other students from out of state. We all went through rush and decided to pledge to the same fraternity. So we all pledged Lambda Chi Alpha The chapter had 120 members and pledges, a cook and we served 2 meals a day, lunch and dinner Monday-Friday. I was the only one to get initiated (was Vice President my senior year), the other two did not make their grades. I was 23 when I enrolled so I changed my residency from Florida to Tennessee and was able to pay in-state tuition. The best financial thing that helped was also getting the position of Business Manager of the TIGER RAG. The commission I was paid each month on ad sales amounted to the equivalent of $5,300 a month in today's money. Bought a new Pontiac GTO (paid cash for it) my senior year and lived in the LXA fraternity house with 15 other guys after I got initiated. A special bonus was that the MSU Business School was ranked in the Top 5 in the US my senior year by SMSE (Society of Marketing and Sales Executives). I had a great time and got a great degree from a ranked university. I was sure to put that Top 5 ranking on my resumes. I never had a problem finding a great job in Marketing, Advertising or Sales.

My philosophy: Who says you should get your degree in four years? No one. So what if it takes 7 years because you are working while taking night courses or 6 to 9 hours a semester and take some courses over the summer? The ultimate goal is the get the degree and if it takes a little longer and you get to enjoy college for a few extra years, so be it. The best thing is you can graduate debt free with no student loan and you are older and wiser when you enter the job market. What that says is that a degree is obtainable by anyone willing to work and study at the same time.

RE: What made you go to Memphis State / University of Memphis?
I have really enjoyed all these stories. My father graduated from the Normal School in the late 1930's, and then became the biggest Ole Miss fan ever. He played football for Central and MUS, and my first football game was the infamous Memphis-Ole Miss game at Crump Stadium where we played the Rebels to a tie.

Daddy instilled in me a passion for football. I went off to Emory, then Vandy, but I did a summer on campus at the Memphis State in 1971, and I always say without those summer credits, I would not have graduated from Vandy. BTW, if you can get in Vandy, it is now a free ride to those who need it.

Anyway, Vandy is a long haul from here to go to football games, so I quickly became a Tiger BB (Larry Finch years) and football fan (esp the DBack U years in the 70's.) I love this town passionately and I also love the U of M, and live close enough to walk to the Liberty Bowl. My twin granddaughters now love Tiger football as much as I do.

No, I lived at home most of my time. Never lived in the dorms.

RE: What made you go to Memphis State / University of Memphis?
I didn't graduate from MSU/UM but spent 3 plus years at the school. I later moved away to Iowa and went to nursing school.I grew up in Bartlett, graduated from Bolton in 1990. Sylvester Grey graduated the year I started Bolton so I never saw him play at Bolton. I also lived in the Treadwell area until 7th grade and was in band class with Penny Hardaway. Ironically my junior year Bolton played Treadwell three times. They killed us twice. I told my mom wouldn't it be cool if we meet in the state final and we finally win! That's what happened.
I remember transferring to Ellendale in the middle of 7th grade and in 1985, they "cancelled" classes and we watched the final four game during school hours. That was fun. We all dressed up in Tiger blue too.
I almost went to UTK. I have no idea why. I hate the Vols. I ended up changing my mind and going to "Tiger High" I had joined a sorority and had a blast. I did party way too much my first semester and got in big trouble with my parents. I had so much fun though and I still don't regret it 30 plus years later. I left in January 94 to follow a boyfriend/then husband/now ex to Iowa. Im still here unfortunately but I did finish school since I hardly knew anyone and had nothing distracting me. I lived in my own apartment my first semester(big mistake), home and the dorms. It was good to live in the dorms so I didn't have to drive so far but I had to pay to live in the dorms. My parents paid my tuition. So much cheaper than Iowa State where my daughter attended last year.
I still love the Tigers to this day. My dad was a big Tiger fan while I was growing up and we would watch games together. It was really fun cheering on Penny Hardaway during my college years too. His play was unreal. My mom and stepdad are season ticket holders for FB and BB. I haven't been to a game since Shaq played. Life and two girls who are busy in their own sports has taken precedent but I plan on attending a game this fall hopefully!

I bet you were in my Mom's class. She taught at Campus School for 31 years.

I attended from 1965-1971. What is her name? If I didn’t have her, perhaps my brother did, who was 7 years behind me.
I attended in 65-66. 5th and 6th grade
