Quick Summary of Conference TV contracts
Probably got errors. Feel free to call to my attention to correct.

SEC: ABC/ESPN starting 2024 and SEC TV Network. Largest conference network with 70M subscribers. SEC does not own any part of SEC TV Network but instead negotiated a share of profits.

BIG TEN: FOX/ESPN and B1G TV Network. Current contract ends 2024. FOX owns 61% of B1G TV Network. 50M subscribers.

NOTRE DAME: NBC and ACC TV Network for Olympic sports. NBC contract ends 2024.

ACC: ESPN and ACC TV Network. Contract ends 2036. (Help! I could not understand various sources giving the number of subscriptions!)

PAC: FOX/ESPN and PAC TV Network. 14.8M subscribers. Contract ends 2024.

BIG 12: FOX/ESPN. No conference TV Network instead relying on ESPN+. Contract ends 2025.

Quick Summary of Conference TV contracts
Is it worth the Big 12 trying to get its own network?

bad idea

1. the Big 12 needs as much national exposure as possible even if for slightly less dollars

2. conference networks are only successful if you have a large media company behind you to "cram" the channel on cable and sat MSOs by including it in the negotiations for all of their other desirable networks

that is mainly ESPN (ESPN is not that great of a partner and needs no additional football content) and even Fox is not that great at cramming a network

3. it ca be years before negotiations come up between a media company and the cable and sat MSOs and as of now many are successfully resisting cramming and starting to do so more and more

4. the Big 12 needs a shorter term media contract in the range of 6 or 7 years......a network would barely be up and rolling by then and probably not even close to penetration of cable and SAT MSOs

5. cable subs are falling at a rate of something like 4 million per year and gaining.....that is a dying proposition

6. the ACC got chumped on their network....they gave up the OBLIGATION for ESPN to show games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN II in exchange for ESPN moving some of those games over the the ACCn with much lower coverage and with ESPN recovering 100% of the cost of running that network before any profit sharing

as of now the network is only a couple of years old and supposedly with the new "concast" deal they will get the bIG MoNeY, but with concast losing something like 1 million subs a year for how long.....probably not very long especially with another 3+ million being lost by the other cable and SAT MSOs

so you are allowing your content to be moved to a lower penetration network, allowing ESPN to show more games against your conference games ON THEIR MAN CHANNELS, and you are now having ESPN get 100% cost recovery to deliver your games before you get any profit sharing......on a media that is looking to have 50% fewer subscribers overall in a few years and a media that is pushing back against having channels crammed on them which raises rates.....which increases cancellations

conference networks are an idea that has come and is going away faster and faster and the Big 12 needs none of that there is no benefit only downsides

RE: Quick Summary of Conference TV contracts
This seems a better thread for this...Jason Scheer [247 Sports Arizona] reports his sources told ESPN offer to P12 is $24.5M/school. Doesn't mean it's true but if it is lower than $30M then that is a biitch slap offer. Mark -41:00 from live 365 Sports stream...

One note on the B12 contract. I forget the exact number, but it's only a few schools who have pooled their Tier 3 rights to stream on ESPN+. The B12 is the only P5 league that (currently) allows all of it's schools to sell their Tier 3 rights individually. So UT does this through the Longhorn network and other schools have deals in place for this as well.

65 FB games & CCG, 160 BB games & conf tourn.

Fox not making Pac an offer & splitting games.

secn and big10n are not going anywhere......that said, conferences like the big12 should most definately not look to the sec or big10 as 'what to do' lol.....

Cable subs may be falling, but ESPN viewership probably isn't. I am pretty sure ESPN doesn't care if you're watching on Crapcast, Slime Warner, YouTube TV, or Hulu as long as they're getting the eyeballs.

I liked the other day when this same AD finally woke up and realized and said that there was no looking out for each other with P5 conferences there were some that were going to stab you in the back no matter what (uh yea welcome to 2010 at least)

but still I wish the ADs of the Big 12 would learn to shut up

getting the same payout under a new media deal would not be horrible for the Big 12 because it would mean that with a scaling media deal the low end of that deal will still be paying the same or more than the last years of a very long current Big 12 deal and thus it would have a higher overall average (perhaps $30-$32 million in TV money on average per year for the life of the deal), but still that is not a massive win for the Big 12 coming off a long term deal

it would be better than the PAC 12 by about $6 to $8 million it looks like, but it would be about $5 million under what Navigate was predicting

also he is of course talking about a total distribution and the Big 12 has been doing better in a lot of areas compared to the PAC 12 in other money

and of course if the money comes in lower he looks stupid.....which is why really Big 12 ADs need to shut up and let the new commissioner talk for the conference especially in times like these
