Report: Big 12 and PAC 12 won’t partner; talks end
Quote:Talks about a partnership between the Big 12 and the Pac-12, which had been discussed extensively the past two weeks, have officially ended, sources told ESPN.

Officials from the Big 12 told Pac-12 officials on Monday that they're no longer interested in exploring the partnership, sources said.

A Big 12 source said that the deal didn't work for the Big 12 for "a multitude of reasons," which included the fact that any potential deal wouldn't have driven much revenue for the league. "It just didn't work," the source said.

There's been at least three Zoom calls between top league officials in the Big 12 and the Pac-12 and other calls between other factions of the league -- including legal -- to discuss different options. The extent of the conversations had not been previously reported.

A Pac-12 source briefed on the conversations said that the Big 12 had expressed interest on Friday in possibly exploring a full merger. The Big 12 source said of the three options laid out by the Pac-12 -- pooling rights, a scheduling concept or fully combining the leagues -- the only scenario that could have potentially driven value because of the sheer numbers of schools and populations areas was a full merger of the leagues.

The Pac-12 source indicated the Big 12 was interested in that option. A Big 12 source said the Big 12 needed more time to explore that option further, which it did over the weekend and decided not to explore any options further

RE: Report: Big 12 and PAC 12 won’t partner; talks end
Quote:New Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has maintained that the league is "open for business" and the conference has stressed that it plans to be aggressive about potential additions.

"We will leave no stone unturned to drive value for the conference," Yormark said at media day. He added: "There is no higher priority than to best position the Big 12 for its upcoming multimedia rights negotiations. Everything we do must create momentum for those negotiations."

Would Memphis add value if they didn’t think the rest of the PAC 12 could do that?

I think after playing a few seasons against bigger names and the bandwagon fans hopping on we could.

Unfortunately media probably won't pay based upon potential when they are paying such escalating fees to the SEC & B1G already. Based on the results of the B12/PAC decisions they might both take a pretty substantial hit in their next deals.

Growing brand with a footprint in SEC territory. Yes we add value.

There is a major difference between us having value and us adding value. Memphis, we certainly have value but no we do not add value to any conference. We are not bringing in $40+ million per year in value.

Its all about the TV $$$$ per team. If adding a school doesn't at least keep everyone at par then that school doesn't get added.

There is probably some minimum number of schools that need to be in a league in order to have enough 'content' - probably 10 to 12 schools.

There also might be 'package deals' that involve two schools sticking together for one reason or another.

So, unless a conference gets raided to below 10-12 members or the TV dollars make it a winner - the major conferences don't look interested in adding just to add.

I don't see this as favorable for Memphis at the moment.

After this year the AAC will be a drag on Memphis and thinking that Memphis is going to dominate the weaker AAC isn't automatic at all.

The teams that got left behind in CUSA when Memphis moved on did not fare well at all with UAB being the lone exception and how good were they really? Not too great.

One of these leagues is about to poach the other. Which one depends on what TV networks are willing to pay

I don't agree with this. I think that two big conferences are eventually going to expand even more once the ACC is done with their pesky GOR. If you have two conferences totally at least 40 members and getting 10 or 12 out of the 16 spots, you can't have a 12 team ACC or 10 team Big 12 getting 2 spots. For those two conferences to get 2 each into the playoff, I would think that they would have to be at 16 members at the very least.

This is what I'm beginning to think too. So, besides just trying to lobby our university to the conference bigwigs, we need to be hawking the networks with our value so we can show that we bring something of worth to the show.

Therein lies the problem- we don’t bring much value, if any, in football. Basketball doesn’t matter a bit in this.

What if poaching doesn't pan out. B12 to PAC or PAC to B12, then what?

Does the B12 become aggressive and add 2 or 4 teams from AAC/MWC like was previously discussed or do they remain as is?

Partnership would have killed our chances. We are still clinging to life this way. We wait.

Sitting back and waiting has not worked well for the Big12 in the past. That’s an understate that should be unassailable. Being proactively has worked quite well for the SEC and the Big, which is another understatement. Let’s hope that with a new commissioner on board, the Big12 can learn from its mistakes and become aggressive.

Mind boggling.

The Pac-12 is a higher value conference than the Big 12. I can see the Pac-12 poaching some schools from the Big 12 but I don't see why any Pac-12 school would want to go to the Big 12 and get less money. Washington, Stanford, and Oregon are all bring more to the table than anyone left in the Big 12.

I would agree that you would think the Pac has a higher value but it almost sounds like the b12 feels they are in a position to poach someone from the Pac12. Perhaps the Az schools?

They might *feel* that way but it doesn't seem true. Kind of like how Mike Aresco tried to poach some schools from the Big 12 last year. He might have *felt* like that was a possibility but it is not what ended up happening.

There's a huge difference between a P5 Big 12 and the AAC. And the Pac-12 is already in shambles. The Big 12 is not punching up.
