Chages are coming.... Are We Ready?
I heard from our AD at UNT about some of these changes, and he is preparing for this new reality. I haven't seen this topic posted on here and thought some of you might comment on where you programs are and what your game plan is for meeting the new requirements. This article from SI goes into some of the changes, but not all. Here is a fragment from the story.

"Several athletic administrators and college sports insiders discussed the Transfer Committee’s concepts under the condition of anonymity. They include (1) eliminating scholarship caps on sports that offer only partial scholarships; (2) abolishing the limitation on the number of coaches per team; (3) expanding direct payments from schools to athletes; (4) reconfiguring the recruiting calendar; and (5) implementing closed periods in the NCAA transfer portal. At least the first three items will be left in the decision-making hands of individual conferences, if the concepts are approved."

https://www.si.com/college/2022/04/27/nc...ee-changes

Matt Brown of the Athletic has also commented on the subject and addresses some other aspects I have hear about....

-The committee won't make membership recommendations until Q1 of 2023.

-Schools will have a three-year waiver period to get into compliance of new recommendations. Nobody is getting booted tomorrow.

-Schools will need to commit to sponsoring somewhere between 18-20 NCAA sponsored sports, NOT including FBS football.

-Most sport-specific scholarship caps and staffing caps will be lifted, as conferences will decide how many scholarships to offer per sport.

-Benchmarks about stadium size and attendance will be removed

-Schools will need to commit to sponsoring X number of scholarships across all sports, unless they get an Ivy waiver

-Schools will need to commit to maintaining a certain ratio of coaches to scholarship athletes, trainers to scholarship athletes, mental health professionals to scholarship athletes AND academic support specialists. The increase in STAFFING will be a bigger financial lift than the requirement to sponsor additional sports.

-In an effort to get around antitrust issues, these guidelines will be set up in a way for schools to "self select" which levels to participate in, rather than entire conferences getting booted.

-In a related move, I believe the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments will expand, and that not every conference will be guaranteed championship access to every NCAA sponsored sport.

Apparently there are more requirements than just those listed in the article and not all of Matt Brown's were stated by our AD. Our AD had our athletic center expansion redesigned to accommodate the new influx of required staff, coaches, and resources. I'll be back later with more information.

As it stands right now all, according to 632 “reliable internet sources,” all SMU has to do is choose which P5 conference they wish to be in. Apparently all have welcomed us.

Sounds like the SEC and Big 10 wrote these.

The split is coming. Some programs will cripple themselves attempting to keep up.

The more I read about this transformation committee, the more I agree. It seems Aresco was looking for programs that can meet the increasing financial demands of the new DI.

I am sure you will choose the SEC. I bet you go in with NTSU as a travel partner!

Congrats!
