RE: Hustlebelt Non-Conference Article FOOTBALL
Everybody has been bringing up UNLV and it has stirred up the memory of a game at UNLV in the early 90's. It seems that when we reminisce about great games of the past, we overlook the game at UNLV.

I am going by memory here so my facts maybe off, please correct me if I am off on anything.
I do believe this game was on a Thursday night which was a rarity at that time so it was shown nationwide on ESPN. it was as a shootout to the very end and I think the score was 38-37 I don't remember who our great players were in that year but I think it was played before the LeShon Johnson years.
Though I think he was already in the pros at the time, but I do remember Ickey Woods getting TV exposure at the game. He might have came back to support the UNLV on the sideline.

The reason why I think this should game should be up there in "past great game" discussions is that we put on an offensive show on national TV which back then was a rare opportunity. Just like the Maryland game was a big boost to our program, we should also mention this game.

Thanks for posting this. It looks like it must have been the '87 game. It looks like it might have been after Thanksgiving so I wonder if it was a Friday night game instead. if anybody has memories of this game, please share. Drinking 4 years of cheap, bad beer called Schaefer has made my mind fuzzy at times.

I had just moved to Florida earlier that year. The place we were renting had cable. Tuned into that new ESPN channel and witnessed Marshal Taylor (all 5' 8") of him run all over the UNLV defense. It was surreal watching an NIU game on National TV at this point i time.

That's right! To hat would have been the Marshall Taylor years. Which means that our favorite Hollywood actor of all time, Steve Harris would have been playing.

And NIU 's version of the Refrigerator that Jerry Pettibone used in the wishbone occasionally, Todd Peat.

Other notable NFL draft picks that would have played in that game was Doug Bartlett and Clarence Vaughn.

Brain cells must've be regenerating.

That '87 game was the first one I recall seeing on ESPN. UNLV had Ickey Woods who I believe lead the nation in rushing, before a brief and productive NFL career
