American University has since dropped the charges due to the blowback. But it is a sad sign of the times that it could happen at all, nonetheless.

“American University has cleared a law student of harassment charges for expressing pro-choice views in a private chat group.
Daniel Brezina was cleared after intervention in the case by Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. FIRE is still pushing AU on steps to take so other students are not punished or threatened with punishment.
“I’m glad that the school has cleared me, but this investigation should never have happened in the first place,” Brezina said. “If American doesn’t commit to changing the way it handles these investigations, other students will still have to fear being investigated for pure speech.””

Joe McCarthy was right.

Now, what needs to happen next is that whoever participated in the original decision should be charged with criminal civil rights crime for violating Brezina's right to free speech.

ETA: Might have to be civil because no force was used or threatened, but still should be litigated. Let these a-holes who pull this sort of stuff know very clearly that they are buying themselves a long and expensive legal process, and maybe they will think twice before doing it.

The article say pro-choice views were being investigated (I googled the case). The pro-life student made the complaint. I am pro-life, but that whole thing you posted was confusing.
