My gut reaction is it's not a good idea but don't feel strongly about it.

If schools think they can make money off it, they'll do it.

It's probably time. Broke athletic departments are looking to make up lost revenue from covid and it will probably marginally decrease binge drinking outside the stadium. Perhaps it will get students to stay later instead of leaving at halftime.

College football, for the most part, is struggling to attract and retain fans at games. Anything to get them out needs to be considered.

I don't see any reason not to. Students are already getting drunk before the game anyway. Could be a nice boost in revenue.

I still think Western should partner with Bell's or other local breweries to build a beer garden at Waldo. It'd be a nice attraction and place to hang out during the game. Would look cool on TV, too.

There's a big difference between EMU trying beer sales for one game and a school doing it for the whole season. It appears that EMU's inability to draw fans makes it difficult for them to sell beer at games without losing money.

Quote:Selling beer at a home football game against Ball State didn't turn into the revenue generator Eastern Michigan University athletic officials had hoped for, but there's a reason the experiment turned into a $3,000 loss for the program.

EMU assistant athletic director for media relations Greg Steiner said the school paid Arbor Brewing Co. just under $900 for the beer it sold at the Sept. 26 game against Ball State at Rynearson Stadium, peddling 559 16-ounce beers at $7 per cup. Sales brought in just under $4,000.

But the university also incurred $1,200 in costs for extra security and an additional $5,000 in one-time rental fees for tables, tents, hedges and other equipment, bringing the total overall cost to nearly $7,100. Taking into account only the cost of the beer and extra security -- and not rental fees -- EMU profited roughly $3.30 per beer sold or about $1,845.

"(The rental fees) were expenditures we wouldn't have going forward if we were to continue in the future with beer sales because we would buy the equipment and not have those recurring costs," Steiner said.

The announced attendance for the game was 4,463, with an average of one out of every eight people buying a beer.

If WMU gets 15,000 fans, it will sell 1,875 beers x $7 = $13,125 x 6 home games = $78,750. Sounds like that will make up for any rental or equipment purchase fees.

The idea of having a beer garden isn't too bad. But I hope they won't allow folks to have beer in the stands. I've been at Comerica Park and had the person sitting behind me spill their beer down my back. If the cost for a beer is as much as at Comerica maybe that will discourage folks from partaking.

I still say to get rid of the lower bleachers in the West endzone, drop it down to field level and make that a beer garden. put some TVs around with jumbotron feeds as well as relevant games.

I bought season tickets in 2019 in the west endzone and loved them. Great view and the sun is never a problem. The only down side is the visiting fans to the right of you, but that just makes the CMU tears more enjoyable.

Edit to add:

However, I do like the idea for a beer garden. Make it heated and you might even see some more people on the late night MACtion games.

Could this be opening the door to alcohol sales at WMU events?

Hopefully it opens the door to something better than a dry burger and a mediocre hot dog.
