You will be for a few years but over time you will end up watching what ESPN, FOX, CBS, etc cover. It may take a few years but most of the mad fans will come back and after 10-15 years the kids that grow up won't remember how it used to be.

Remember the CUSA TV packages? Memphis will have something like that. The $$$$ will be bigger but relatively speaking compared to what Tier 1 will be getting it'll actually be worse.

Here is the deal, I'm not paying to watch us play in some watered down league with C-USA teams on Thursday nights. I'm not the only one I bet.

Spoken like many atypical Tiger "fans".
This is supposed to be a thread about boycotting elitist football programs tv broadcasts. Instead most of you are talking about the future and about how you won't support Tiger football if your future comes to pass. This is why the Tigers are not in a so called P5 conference now, lack of fan support. Hell many of you don't think anyone but elite programs should be able to compete for a title anyway. I am pretty certain that group will continue to watch the Alabama, Clemson, Texas, etc games moving forward.

Current members from the Big and SEC won't be left out, they need cannon fodder to beat up on.

Correct - there will be some PAC and ACC teams pump and dumped. It just all depends on how it all shakes out and what conferences, if any, outside of the SEC and the BIG10 get a slot in the expanded National Championship.

IF SEC and BIG10 go to 24 each and then break away then the left overs - even the ACC / PAC12 / BIG12 left overs will be just as left behind as anyone in the G5. All of them together will be relegated to the 2nd level playing for a 2nd class NC just like FCS does today.

At first, a lot of people will be upsetz and make a lot of angry social media posts - BUT - within a couple of years when they see that it's not going to change anything they will relax and watch the SEC and BIG10 play minor league professional football because that is what ESPN, FOX, CBS, Apple, etc are going to hype and show in prime time.

10-15 years from now the left behinds will be playing what we would today think of as FCS football.

The problem becomes getting people to games anymore. Its not like attendance is on some upswing. People are not going to pay to watch 2nd and 3rd tier football, not in large numbers anyway. I think its going to be hard to sustain football at many places.

Correct. North Dakota State is an absolute FCS powerhouse and they play in a 18,700 seat stadium. They have like 11 national titles but at the FCS level so very few care.

Americans are not going to come in droves and pay big money to watch 2nd / 3rd tier anything much less football when the big boys will have all the hype and all the prime time TV slots locked up on ESPN, FOX, CBS, etc.

The left behinds will be about what CUSA is today as far as the RELATIVE tv money is concerned. The ACC payouts may get a little bigger over time but relative to what Tier 1 is getting it'll be much, much worse that it already is.

They care. I doubt they care if we care.

Boycotts sound great but they rarely last long and almost never work. People will be mad for awhile then they move on with their lives. After the NFL fukked Memphis and gave Jacksonville the team we should have had I didn't watch for over 5 years. Eventually I did. Eventually most people will engage with whatever ESPN, FOX, CBS, Apple etc. Hype and broadcast....

It may not happen all at once and it won't be immediate. There will certainly be 2-3 more years of the current system but all the realignment deals will get announced. Everyone will know who's in and who's out.

The FBS left outs will be dealing with being 2nd class. How much attention do any of us pay to FCS and its 16 team playoff? Not very much.

AAA Redbirds pack the stands every night? You guys watch a lot of USFL? Who's your favorite D League team? You get the idea....

I think Herbstreit has it right: The money gap will be so big that Tier 2 will never ever get a kid that Tier 1 wants. From facilities to NIL $$$$ it won't be apples to oranges, it'll be Florida fresh Harry & David's vs. a dried up half eaten core laying by the side of the road.

I guess we will have wait and see how it all plays out but it looks really, really grim and if Memphis gets left behind in football then why be 2nd or even 3rd class. Just focus on the sport that you can and historically have actually competed for the NC in - basketball.

Amen

We’ve been second/third tier for years and it’s been pretty good for the most part. We will never be first tier, but a conference like the old American would be pretty good. The good news is that we won’t end up in conference worse than we are in now. It might not be better, but it I can’t imagine it being any worse.

Here's why it's worse. Right now the G5 teams have a guarantee that one of them gets one of the 12 access bowl slots. The AAC has dominated it and Memphis even went to the 2019 Cotton Bowl. Last year Cincinnati even grabbed a spot in the 4 team NC playoff. There was 'access' to the top level.

Under this new system that will go away. There will be zero chance for that to happen. The relative money gap will get exponentially worse that it is now. Think about how the FCS relates to the FBS today and that's how it's going to be for schools that are on the wrong side of the line. Completely shut out which will affect TV money, recruiting, donations, attendance, general fan interest - all of it is going to go down the toilet.

I'm not seeing the connection between what we know is happening, and the doomsday that you describe.
We don't know what will happen with the playoff or bowl system.
There will still remain the same pressures that exist today to have an "accessible" playoff.
Have their own playoff with only one-third of FBS programs allowed?

RE: Join the movement: Boycott the Power Conferences
Well, honestly I think these tantrums or boycotts are pretty silly. I’m not going to refuse to watch football games just because conference expansion does not follow my suggestions.

I like football. I am very excited to watch my Covington Chargers compete in 3A football, despite the fact that the TSSAA has 4A, 5A, and 6A schools that play at a higher level.

I have two degrees from Tenn Tech, which plays what was once called Div 1-AA football. I always enjoyed watching the Golden Eagles compete in the OVC when I was a student. The fact that the team wasn’t the SEC did not affect my enthusiasm. Then I moved away from Cookeville and it was hard to follow the program from afar in those days.

While living in the Memphis area, I went to watch Alabama play at Memphis State in 1986. Surprise! The Tigers won. I was impressed, which eventually led to me becoming a season ticket holder for football, a booster in the Highland Hundred, etc. I have enjoyed being a Tiger fan despite the fact that our school was not in a football conference, or later, was in a “smaller” conference.

The conference we are in does not affect my fandom. The fact that Memphis has only beat UT once in our history does not affect my fandom. I think some of you find the fact that we remain in the AAC as a blow to your ego or your manhood. Can’t you just show up on game day, root for your team to win, and go home happy?

Life is too short to get bent out of shape over what team joins what conference. As The Beach Boys once sang “Be True to Your School”.

Tech has always been in that division, High school football is based on the student body size so that's a completely different thing We are going backwards if we stay in the AAC. No one wants to go backwards. The further you slip down the list the less interest you generate. That's just reality.

That was 1987, my first Tiger game too.

One of the reasons I went to Memphis State instead of TN Tech was because I wanted to go to a place that played Div I sports. It wasn't the deciding factor, but just a minor point. That being said, I've been to plenty of games against SE Louisiana, Louisiana-Lafayette when they were D-IAA, Ark St when they were D-IAA, etc. I went to watch "my team", not beggingly wishing for a dopamine rush and bragging rights if we could win against a name opponent.

SELA has been FCS for a long time.

UL-Lafayette was called SW Louisiana.

Go join up folks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/16891222...?ref=share

If the link doesn’t work. Just type, “Boycott the power conference’s” in your Facebook search window.

Keep on inviting new members folks! This isn’t just for those being left out. It’s for fans of teams in the “Power” conferences as well. Your conferences, and teams, are losing their identity. If you think Conference expansion is the answer for your league, look no further than the Big East….in the midst of its expansion, it still died. Now the PAC 12 & ACC, long the authors of how to gut lesser leagues. Now they are on the chopping block.

SEC & B1G fans, you think you’re immune? Just wait until ESPN, CBS & Fox have consolidated your leagues into one nice melting pot. Once they have what they want, your conferences will be dissolved as well. Into one giant exclusive conglomerate all in the name of MONEY.

As fans you’ll lose your rivals. You’ll lose the pageantry of Saturdays. You’ll lose the ease of traveling to play your regional road games.

If we stop watching. If we boycott. That’s our only chance at saving college sports.

Money is a big factor in college athletics. The lesser the conference, the lesser the money, the worse the facilities, harder recruiting, travel costs don't magically decrease either. Football in general allows other sports the ability to compete and travel, and a good portion of the dollars that football generates is TV money from conference affiliations. It's a very slippery slope. While I agree we shouldn't allow this to affect our "fandom," being content with where we are can be very detrimental to the football program, and likely, many other sports programs within the school. The only sport that likely wouldn't be affected by football $$ is basketball, as it generates enough to be self-sufficient.

So... the 's at the end of Conference's indicates possession. It's a grammatical error. It should be "Boycott the Power Conferences"...

This group/movement isn't just for those who've been blocked by the power 5 cartel. If you are a fan of a team who's in a "power" league, look no further than the ACC and Pac12. Once the takers, now they are being taken and have become beggars.
The old BigEast, once the takers, now doesn't even exist. Conference realignment only benefits the TV companies and a few top schools. It will not stop until the most powerful Universities have joined forces to form a new system that will block the likes of schools like Ole Miss & Missouri.

We'll look up and schools like South Carolina and Oklahoma State will be left out. If you think your school is safe because they are currently in one of the "Power" Leagues....just look at how quickly UCLA, USC, Texas an Oklahoma jumped ship when they found a way to not have to split their money with bottom feeders in their leagues.

Top SEC & B1G schools will soon do the same. If we don't stop this now, not even the SEC and B1G will be able to escape the changes that are headed for college sports when the likes of ESPN, CBS & Foxsports are done.

We can make a difference just like soccer fans in Europe did. Step up and make your voice heard. Boycott Power Conference games on TV. Don't attend their games. Even if your team is in a Power league. If you don't want to see the likes of USC, Ohio State, Alabama & Notre Dame controlling all of college football and TV rights, it's time to make your voice heard.
