I think we'll be playing with some Vandy's and Miss States. The P5 (and ND) will need to reduce by 17 (current) teams to get to 48.
Current members from the Big and SEC won't be left out, they need cannon fodder to beat up on.

Correct - there will be some PAC and ACC teams pump and dumped. It just all depends on how it all shakes out and what conferences, if any, outside of the SEC and the BIG10 get a slot in the expanded National Championship.

IF SEC and BIG10 go to 24 each and then break away then the left overs - even the ACC / PAC12 / BIG12 left overs will be just as left behind as anyone in the G5. All of them together will be relegated to the 2nd level playing for a 2nd class NC just like FCS does today.

At first, a lot of people will be upsetz and make a lot of angry social media posts - BUT - within a couple of years when they see that it's not going to change anything they will relax and watch the SEC and BIG10 play minor league professional football because that is what ESPN, FOX, CBS, Apple, etc are going to hype and show in prime time.

10-15 years from now the left behinds will be playing what we would today think of as FCS football.

The problem becomes getting people to games anymore. Its not like attendance is on some upswing. People are not going to pay to watch 2nd and 3rd tier football, not in large numbers anyway. I think its going to be hard to sustain football at many places.

Correct. North Dakota State is an absolute FCS powerhouse and they play in a 18,700 seat stadium. They have like 11 national titles but at the FCS level so very few care.

Americans are not going to come in droves and pay big money to watch 2nd / 3rd tier anything much less football when the big boys will have all the hype and all the prime time TV slots locked up on ESPN, FOX, CBS, etc.

The left behinds will be about what CUSA is today as far as the RELATIVE tv money is concerned. The ACC payouts may get a little bigger over time but relative to what Tier 1 is getting it'll be much, much worse that it already is.

Boycotts sound great but they rarely last long and almost never work. People will be mad for awhile then they move on with their lives. After the NFL fukked Memphis and gave Jacksonville the team we should have had I didn't watch for over 5 years. Eventually I did. Eventually most people will engage with whatever ESPN, FOX, CBS, Apple etc. Hype and broadcast....

It may not happen all at once and it won't be immediate. There will certainly be 2-3 more years of the current system but all the realignment deals will get announced. Everyone will know who's in and who's out.

The FBS left outs will be dealing with being 2nd class. How much attention do any of us pay to FCS and its 16 team playoff? Not very much.

AAA Redbirds pack the stands every night? You guys watch a lot of USFL? Who's your favorite D League team? You get the idea....

I think Herbstreit has it right: The money gap will be so big that Tier 2 will never ever get a kid that Tier 1 wants. From facilities to NIL $$$$ it won't be apples to oranges, it'll be Florida fresh Harry & David's vs. a dried up half eaten core laying by the side of the road.

I guess we will have wait and see how it all plays out but it looks really, really grim and if Memphis gets left behind in football then why be 2nd or even 3rd class. Just focus on the sport that you can and historically have actually competed for the NC in - basketball.

Amen

We’ve been second/third tier for years and it’s been pretty good for the most part. We will never be first tier, but a conference like the old American would be pretty good. The good news is that we won’t end up in conference worse than we are in now. It might not be better, but it I can’t imagine it being any worse.

You will be for a few years but over time you will end up watching what ESPN, FOX, CBS, etc cover. It may take a few years but most of the mad fans will come back and after 10-15 years the kids that grow up won't remember how it used to be.

Remember the CUSA TV packages? Memphis will have something like that. The $$$$ will be bigger but relatively speaking compared to what Tier 1 will be getting it'll actually be worse.

Not sure how you can tell other people that you know they aren’t going to do what they say they are. I’m hearing a lot of people say they are walking away from college football slowly but surely. Just like people said they were going to walk away from the NFL. Attendance is down everywhere across-the-board in both the NFL and college football. They can make every excuse under the sun as to why that is the case. But it is nothing but corporate leadership failing to admit or recognize they have made the wrong decision time after time until they slowly but surely alienate people away

I stopped watching and caring about the NFL years ago. And I was about as die hard as they come. I used to get up on Saturdays and watch football from 11 AM until midnight. Same for basketball. I haven’t done that for years now. Tired of supporting the cartel.

Would rather put my time and energy into coaching youth

Here's why it's worse. Right now the G5 teams have a guarantee that one of them gets one of the 12 access bowl slots. The AAC has dominated it and Memphis even went to the 2019 Cotton Bowl. Last year Cincinnati even grabbed a spot in the 4 team NC playoff. There was 'access' to the top level.

Under this new system that will go away. There will be zero chance for that to happen. The relative money gap will get exponentially worse that it is now. Think about how the FCS relates to the FBS today and that's how it's going to be for schools that are on the wrong side of the line. Completely shut out which will affect TV money, recruiting, donations, attendance, general fan interest - all of it is going to go down the toilet.

Only if we get into the new 2nd tier. The AAC is going to be 3rd tier football. Go watch a replay of a MAC game and see our football future. Hey at least then the people that want an on campus stadium could get one. 20,000 max and parking won't be an issue. Our football future

The AAC did dominate it. We lost 3 of the best 4 teams and replaced them with total garbage. There just wasn’t anything better available. The AAC with us, UCF, Cinci and Houston was a very good conference. We lost 3 of the best football teams and two of the best basketball teams. Seriously, look at the conference now. The best of the dregs.

We are in C-USA 2.0. So, no, it won’t get much worse.

Yes, but even now the AAC champion has a chance (like the other G5s) to grab that access slot. That will absolutely be going away depending on what the SEC and the BIG10 decide to do.

IF the SEC and the BIG10 decide to allow the BIG12 / ACC / PAC12 to send their champions to THE national championship playoff (12 or 16 team) then being Tier 2 is still viable.

IF the SEC and the BIG10 decide to completely break away and do their own thing then there won't be a Tier 2 as we've described it - there will be the SEC / BIG10 and all the rest of FBS schools that don't get in will be like FCS is today.

EVEN with the Tier 2 champions allowed a playoff slot - Memphis still has to figure out how to get into a supposed Tier 2 conference. Even that is in question right now.

Regardless of that, the leftovers from the PAC/B12/ACC will be in a much better situation than those that got left out. While their TV contracts won’t come near the SEC/B1G, it will be way higher than tier 3.

Seriously, take an honest look at the new AAC and tell me we’re going to get a big TV contract. We’ve been seriously gutted. We need to find a way to move up to the next level.

Even if they can't break their GOR and make a fraction of the money, there is no way that at the very least, Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida State, and in addition, Oregon aren't going to be allowed to participate in the playoff, there's just no way. So right off the bat, there is still going to be a lot of movement.

Some smart group of attorneys will find a way to open up questions / challenge the ACC GOR agreement - then there will be an out of court settlement. The schools that want to leave will figure out how to leave before 2035/36 - much earlier.

Once ND makes its decision the rest of the dominos will fall in short order and within a few years all the realignment will have actually occurred.

Memphis better hope that the SEC / BIG10 allow the ACC, BIG12, PAC12 to send their champions to THE national championship playoff (filling 3 of the 12 or 16 slots) and then Memphis better find a way into one of these Tier 2 conferences.

IF the BIG10 and the SEC decide to completely break away and do their own thing then there will not be a Tier 2 as described and all of the FBS schools left behind will be relegated to a lower lever with zero access to anything at the top level. Over the next 8-10 years they would devolve into what we think of as FCS today.

It sounds like the North Dakota State people care. If 40-50K part-time Memphis fans cared enough about their team to show up every game rather than worrying about who else was watching, we'd probably be in a different situation right now.

We are supposed to be supporters of the program, but instead we rely on the program's status to support our own fragile self-esteems. It's why there's so much pouting here every time conference realignment comes up. Too much waiting around for someone else - players, coaches, school administration, conference execs - to lift us up an not enough of us doing it ourselves.

It sounds like the North Dakota State people care. If 40-50K part-time Memphis fans cared enough about their team to show up every game rather than worrying about who else was watching, we'd probably be in a different situation right now.

I think it's a matter of luck for a lot of schools in a lot of places that their school happened to be a member of what are now the P5 from 50-100 years ago....... Tulane could have simply stayed in the SEC way back when but - who knew?

I don't think blaming the fan / consumer of any product is ever the correct answer. A series of decision makers didn't do the correct things for decades regardless of what the average fan did or didn't do. Then when they finally did decide to kick it in gear for football they fukked basketball - whicn is why it's been in the shitter for the past 12 years - last year excluded.

It appears that it is all too little, too late but IF The SEC / BIG 10 decide to allow the BIG12 / PAC12 / ACC 1 slot each in THE national championship playoff and IF Memphis can somehow finagle a way into one of these three conferences then I think it would be at least a half step up from what the AAC has been.

At this point I think the die is cast and the dominos will all fall within the next 6-12 months. The work that has been done is either enough or it's not.

They will get to stay in the SEC.

Don’t be so sure about that. I’ve been over on the West Coast for two weeks now. There are a lot of UCLA and USC fans extremely upset at losing their rivals and not being able to drive to away games anymore.…

I do blame some of the fans to some extent because of what I read here. "If we're not in a high enough profile conference, it's over." Like it's all about being in the right club. Seeing and being seen.

Do you not understand what's happening to college football right now? It is exactly about getting into a high enough profile conference to stay relevant.

If you really don't care and just like going to games, any games then that is fine but I think you will find that most folks are gravely concerned about the implications of this ongoing shake up, NIL $$$$$, etc will have on Tiger athletics - it's looking pretty grim right about now unless you really just don't care what level of college football they play.....

RE: Join the movement: Boycott the Power Conferences
The only boycott that will work is the schools left after all this settles refuse to play play the SEC and BIG in anything. Unless they give the new G5 access to the playoff system let them exist on their own. Make them fill their schedules from a pool of whatever number they end up being. I mean all sports. They can't do that and its the only card left to play.

Lots of schools need the buy game cash and they will have to go along to get along. The way it is......
