But non revenue sports it’s ridiculous. Keep the local geographic footprint for these sports. Imagine the travel costs And headaches for a Rutgers vs USC soccer game for which maybe 100 people attend.

While this makes logistical sense, I can’t imagine a conference (in this case the PAC-12) being so gracious to departing members by giving their other sports a safe harbor.

Nor should they, tbh. If I’m the PAC commissioner, I’m fine with watching those schools deal with the nightmare of their non-football sports.

USC/UCLA’s baseball and softball programs are bearing the brunt here, stepping down in competition.

Won't be watching P5 or whatever they're going to call it any more.

Bye Bye Big Ten Network.

BTN just added the entire Southern California media market. They aren’t going to care if they lose you.

I won't miss them either.

HOWEVER - college sports are not that big in LA, especially if USC and UCLA are not winning big.

There are too many pro teams, too many entertainment options.

People there are not going to be watching CFB games at 9 am or going to them at 9 pm in big numbers on Saturdays (especially to watch mediocre Big Ten teams in November).

Big Ten may have over-reached for "name brands" that might not be able to deliver.

I have a little knowledge about this because our oldest daughter is a writer who is based in LA.

The TV contract will disagree with you.

I've heard USC and UCLA will be going from a 30 million/year deal to over 100 million/year. Logistics won't be a problem. They'll be able to charter a jet for all sports. It's really just adding a couple more hours on air travel.

I just know that if I were a USC alum living in LA, I’d be bummed with this development. My regional West Coast and Arizona rivals replaced by far-flung opponents in the corn belt.

It’s not like I’d be seeing a cut from that increased TV money.

RE: Superconferences Galore
USC has 77,000-seat Coliseum, UCLA has 88,00 capacity Rose Bowl.

Not like Rutgers and Maryland.

Those won't look good half-empty.

Eventually advertisers aren't going to give FOX all that money when nobody's watching or going when Trojans-Bruins are playing Purdue or Northwestern instead of Washington or Oregon, or even Cal and Stanford.

RE: Superconferences Galore
I think some of those Purdue, Northwestern, etc. fans should probably start watching their backs.

Step 1: USC, UCLA (probably Notre Dame) join.

After a few years

Step 2: Everyone except Purdue, Illinois, Rutgers, Maryland, Northwestern withdraws from the conference like the WCHA teams did with UAH and the Alaskas.

Step 3: Remaining 9 teams form new conference, invites UNC, Virginia, Duke, Oregon, Washington, Georgia Tech.

Step 4: Repeat with SEC and ACC

Better yet, go watch the local High Schools. Especially if you have a local hockey team, great atmosphere at High School hockey games.

I don't want to watch High School sports, that is a ridiculous suggestion.

Or do so at any MAC school. The MAC level is still mostly true college student athletics.

Much better atmosphere than near empty D3 facilities, that's all I was hinting at. We go to a couple football games and several hockey games at our local High School every year. I guess I never realized what I was doing was ridiculous.

I'd rather support WMU in a D3 environment than a high school on Homecoming. :|
