Has there been a decision on the shortened Transition?
Been quiet for a while and now that Friday is the official SBC join date, would be curious to see if this has been granted or not.

RE: Has there been a decision on the shortened Transition?
I haven't seen any news about it. I have a feeling it's more of a formality than anything. Plus, it's in the best interest of the entire conference to have us as a full member sooner rather than later, so I believe the entire SB and commissioner Gill would back us up if needed.
It feels similar to when JMU made an appearance at the state to move up to FBS. I was very concerned about it and there really was no need to be as it was a unanimous support (and ODU was even by our side in support).
JMU hasn't made any mistakes when it comes to overplaying their cards. The reason I say that is JMU has been talking about a short transition. If they were unsure about it, I'm sure they would have been talking about a two year transition instead. That way if it wasn't granted, nobody would know otherwise.
I feel very confident that it has either already been approved or it's a non issue as they believe it will be approved.

RE: Has there been a decision on the shortened Transition?
Hopefully we get an info dump on Friday that answers this and other questions. I'm curious to hear if all sports will get entirely new uniforms since they'll all need new conference patches anyways. I know the football team has had their current uniforms for at least 3 years now, so I'd imagine they'll get a new set.

Coach Cig (think it was him) mentioned the one year transition waiver at the coaches caravan in Alexandria. And IIRC, something like they were hoping that to be formally approved before the end of 2022. I think the official word is not imminent.

Believe someone there (coach or JB) mentioned August timeframe for when they might get a formal response. As others have said, it seems to be presumed this is highly likely to be approved.

i'd also think this is not a done deal yet- with the NCAA involved don't be suprised how much logic and common sense are excluded from the decision making process. there is precedent they have to consider, and also the effect on other future / past schools trying to transition. Hopefully Gill has enough influence to help us here.

so we are playing FBS schedule this year...no bowl no champs either way...so really they could make this decision after 2022 and see what we are eligible for in 2023 (limited or full-on)

Would like to see it resolved in a speedy manner. There really is just no excuse for the snail's pace the NCAA moves at. I don't want other schools to be able to use the "uncertainty" of bowl eligibility against us in recruiting.

Went back and reviewed my notes from Coaches caravan again. JB stated that they expected an August decision on the waiver. I feel pretty confident we'll know before the fall season starts.

Not sure this really matters as we would just be in year one of the transition if they said no. Not sure if playing a full FBS schedule has any bearing other than the fact that in order to get the waiver we needed to do so.
That being said I am pretty confident that the waiver will be granted and in 2023 we will be bowl eligible. If they decide otherwise the only difference in next 2 years will be no bowl eligibility in either year.

After the NIL, the Liberty win to move to FBS without an invite, I would hope they would approve the waiver. I don't think JMU would go to court over it if it lost...

Nice. Yeah, I couldn’t recall the timing. Just seemed later than I anticipated. Glad it’s expected sooner rather than later this fall.

RE: Has there been a decision on the shortened Transition?
How many schools that have transitioned played 2 full FBS seasons without being allowed to participate in bowl games?
Most of the schools were playing FCS schedules with a few FBS teams thrown in.
We will be playing a full FBS and a full conference schedule with only one FCS game. While it's possible we won't be bowl eligible next year, I don't think it's likely.

When App, Georgia Southern and Old Dominion had their first FBS season in 2014, the second year of the transition, all three of us finished with 6 bowl-counting wins and applied for a bowl waiver. All three of us were denied, partially because there were already enough bowl-eligible FBS teams to fill the spots. Georgia Southern went 8-0 in the Sun Belt and won the league title that year. There was no conference championship game in 2014 as the rule then was a conference had to have 12 members to hold one, which has since changed.
All three of us were "FCS independents" in 2013. App and GaSo played a full SoCon schedule (but didn't count in the standings and were ineligible for the FCS playoffs) as our transition was announced only a few months before and ODU played a hodge-podge FCS/FBS schedule outside of the CAA as their transition was announced a year before, also ineligible for the FCS playoffs.
Coastal was an "FCS independent" in 2016 and played an FCS schedule with zero FBS opponents (mostly a Big South schedule) and were ineligible for the FCS playoffs, but htye went 10-2 and both losses were by a single point. They played a full FBS/Sun Belt schedule in 2017 but were bowl ineligible, plus they went 3-9.

So we play a full FBS season this year, are not FCC independants does that mean with enough wins should it happen and a waiver we might get a bowl bid? we arenot following the others way into the FBS realm.

I guess the answer to my question is "none".
As for the FCS Independent years, most of those schools had more scholarships than a typical FCS, correct? I thought that was why those schools were not eligible for the FCS playoffs.
I have always under the belief that the transition year was to build up the scholarships to level out the team.
We got lucky in our timing as we were dealing with the Covid year, which allowed FCS teams to have more players on their roster. If not for that, we would have been doing things a lot differently. This year we probably would have been an FCS Independent and not eligible for FCS playoffs. 23-24 season full FBS with no bowl eligibility and then full FBS in 24-25.
This year not being bowl eligible makes perfect sense. Next year does not.

We are effectively in year 2 of transition this year, especially if the shortened transition waiver is granted.
We would need another waiver, but IF enough other FBS teams are not bowl eligible then I think we'd have a shot at getting a bowl waiver also for postseason play (presuming 6+ wins, which is not a given)

This is exactly the way I see it. I was/am thinking we totally are getting to skip year one. I didn't even realize we'd not yet been approved for bowl eligibility during the '23 season (if we win enough games).

RE: Has there been a decision on the shortened Transition?
Never understood why the 1st year of transition to FBS was categorized as "FCS" independent. The moment a team enters a season above 63 scholarships, you are no longer FCS. It really is a no-mans land.
A team in transition is ramping up to 85 schollies. It is no more "FCS" than it is FBS.
FBS requires (or is supposed to require) a two year rolling average of 90% of the scholarship max to be allocated to a team. That translates to a 76.5 average of full scholarships over two years. Even if a team maxed out at 63 scholarships their last full year of FCS and 85 the next year in transitioning to FBS, they wouldn't meet the rolling average minimum in their 1st year of transition: 63+85 divided by 2 = 74 scholarships.
Covid, and the relaxation of maximum recruiting class size #s (due to the quagmire of the transfer portal), has put us in the unique position to be ready right away. To be sure, we will have some existing players that are marginal by FBS standards. I'm sure there are a few 1/2 scholarship guys that were elevated to full scholarship for depth purposes. They will be depth back markers -3rd/4th teamers, that will likely not be renewed beyond this season. Perhaps they will continue as walk ons as our recruiting ramps up.
Anyway, hoping the NCAA uses some logic and considers our situation differently than others who have made the transition. They "should" grant us bowl eligibility next year
