Quote:The Supreme Court handed a big win to a former Washington high school football coach who lost his job over reciting a prayer on the 50-yard line after games.

At issue was whether a public school employee praying alone but in view of students was engaging in unprotected "government speech," and if it is not government speech, does it still pose a problem under the First Amendment's Establishment Clause.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that the answer to both questions is no.

"Here, a government entity sought to punish an individual for engaging in a brief, quiet, personal religious observance doubly protected by the Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment. And the only meaningful justification the government offered for its reprisal rested on a mistaken view that it had a duty to ferret out and suppress," Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the Court's opinion. "Religious observances even as it allows comparable secular speech. The Constitution neither mandates nor tolerates that kind of discrimination."

Awesome!

Dissappointed it wasn't 9-0.

Pretty much. The left is all over the place. It basically comes down to the issue. No problem taking a stance one way on something and taking the complete opposite on something else. They’re idiots

Uhm, Harry... if a coach kneeled at midfield after a game why would you assume it was for prayer? Couldn't he simply be protesting against America?

But what if he was kneeling in prayer... why do you have a problem with that?

Not surprising that someone from the LA Times feels this way. THis morning, the LA Times is concerned about more black people carrying guns in California.

Im loving this court. Common sense has returned to America's highest court. Its pretty amazing that a government funded public school district thinks firing a coach for his religious beliefs somehow represents separation of church and state---when it actually represents the exact OPPOSITE of separation of church and state.

Just so people understand---separation of church and state simply means the government will not form a state religion or interfere with the exercise of ones religious beliefs. Its does NOT mean that churches cannot seek to influence government nor does it mean that government should treat religious organizations any differently than secular organizations.

LA Times makes NY Times look right leaning by comparison.

I don't recall any constitutional right to be free from microaggressions.

OH! That coach is praying!!! That offends me!!! He must be fired.

I wonder if those three would side against "public employees" receiving Kosher and Halal lunches at the school cafeteria also?

Exactly

If after the game he had stood on the 50 yard line and shouted a leftist phrase da jour, no one would have batted an eyelash
