RE: Bill Clark needs rest, but hopefully this isn’t the end
(06-29-2022 06:00 PM)SMUfan Wrote: I hope Bill Clark comes back. But for fun, here are some former P5 head coaches who might take the job:
1. Justin Fuente (VT)
2. Manny Diaz (Miami)
3. Larry Fedora (NC)
4. Bobby Petrino (Louisville) No comments needed
5. Charlie Strong (Texas)
6. Gary Patterson (TCU)
7. Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss)
8. Dan Mullen (he can get a bigger job)
9. Kevin Sumlin (TX A&M)
10. Ed Orgeron (LSU)
11. Chad Morris (SMU-ARK did well in the AAC at SMU)
12. Joe Moorhead (Miss St now Akron)
13. Will Muschamp (SC)
I'm sure there are more. But some good names. Like I said, I hope Coach Clark can come back.
One way to view this list is as a life lesson. Many of these coaches were having success where they were and chose to move on to a new job where, to varying degrees (Orgeron did win a NC) they had much less success. Success at one place or at one level doesn't always mean success at the next place. Every situation is different and sometimes your skill set, personality, your intangible qualities make you just right for the place and time where you are.
Financially, it probably worked out well. But from a pure coaching perspective, they hurt the sustainability and longevity of their careers. Some will never coach again.
There is a book every coach should read: Make the Big Time Where by Frosty Westering.
As a side note:
Diaz was rumored to be coming to UAB as the DC at one time.
Freeze is making $4 mil per year at Liberty.

Unless Liberty falls completely on it's face, I suspect that Freeze's next HC job will be in the SEC.

If we're going to go with coaches with baggage why not Kendal Briles
Hugh Freeze the whoremonger looks positively charming next to Kendal "52 rapes by football players in 4 years" Briles:
Former assistant coach Kendal Briles — the son of the head coach — once told a Dallas area student athlete, “Do you like white women? Because we have a lot of them at Baylor and they love football players,” according to the suit.

That's "baggage"?
Sorry, I really should have fleshed out my sarcasm more. Briles and Lebby are both gross and shouldn't be coaching. I do think Neal Brown would be great in Birmingham though

I hope he'll use a prepaid phone, not the company phone next time

Tom Herman is an interesting name, though. I think he could do well here.

I'm curious. Name 4 that are better than that list.

He can't. But at the same time that list of retreads aren't attainable anyway. If Tom Hermann was interested I would be all in on him. Coaching at UAB is a whole lot easier than at Texas.

Really surprised that with the success Jeff Traylor has had at UTSA nobody has mentioned Mark Freeman. Perhaps if we were gonna be in CUSA next year he would have gotten more traction.

Do you think hiring a high school coach is a good look for a program wanting to be seen as a G5 (or whatever the number is now) power? Has any high school coach made a successful jump directly to FBS? Traylor was a college assistant for five years before getting the UTSA job.

Freeman is 55. All he knows is high school football. Are we confident he can walk into the FBS level and succeed?

Traylor is 54 and came to UTSA as a very successful HS coach. Not advocating for or against. Just surprised as some have mentioned him in the past...

Again, Traylor coached at Texas, SMU, and Arkansas before being hired at UTSA. He was 47 when he got the Texas job.

We are setting our sights higher than a high school coach with the same college experience than those of us on this board.

Yep. Huge difference between the two there. I’m not against Freeman 100%, I just think it would be a boom or bust hire.

It would be a boom hire. His contacts are off-the charts, both HS and college. Recruiting would be astronomically better than it's ever been here. The only drawback is his age........somewhere around 62 or 63, I think.

He’s 55, I posted that. Just because he has contacts and could recruit at a level that makes you happy, doesn’t mean he will make a great head coach. You just assume he will step right into an FBS program and not have a learning curve whatsoever. You know that’s not the case.

I'd take my chances with somebody that has won championships at multiple places. He's deveopled way more P-5 level players than UAB has. There is a learning curve, for sure. Chip Lindsey, a less successful HS coach than Freeman, was mediocre at Troy. Vincent accomplished way less on the HS level than Freeman too. There are a few others I like...... Tom Herman, Brain Bohannon (Kennesaw State), etc. We'll see. Mark is pretty tight with S&C coach Lyle Henley. Our former S&C guy (Trey Clark) actually left UAB for the same job at Thompson.
