Agree, GaSo along with any other G5 school listed or not have about the same chance. If you can get all the planets lined up it could happen anywhere.

There's some truth to this.

People barely knew Coastal Carolina existed until they signed a guy named Grayson McCall at QB who may literally be one of the best QBs in all of FBS as a freshman since Jameis Winston. They never even topped 6 wins in FBS before he got there.

The big variable is coaching. It's pretty obvious to anyone who follows college football that even major P5s rise and fall on coaching hires. Obviously some programs don't need coaching as good to get into the NY6 conversation as others, but that effect is amplified at a level where you don't hold on to your good coaches for long.

Had to give love to a MAC school that has upped its game in recent years, the Flagship of the SUNY system (Long Island is another place), the University At Buffalo.

So much this. It's interesting how in 1 year coastal went from lower mid tier to class leader in the minds of csnbbs posters. I think all eyes will be on them to see if they start reverting to the mean once McCall leaves. In regards to the rest of your post...I think UAB just picked up a lot more eyes as well with the sudden retirement of Bill Clark. Clark was a phenomenal coach for UAB.

I did it because I thought the CUSA should have two slots in the poll, but didn't expect the trio of schools to get as many votes as I thought WKU (or UAB or UTSA) would. So far, the results are in line with expectations.

It's impossible to create a poll that will please everyone. 04-cheers

Makes sense. This could even be a series of polls. Plenty of contenders and variables.

RE: The emerging G5 football powers of the next decade (2023 to 2033) will be...!!!
The year-in-and-year-out G5 football power(s) likely will be a program(s) at schools that place a strong emphasis on football and only a modest (if that) emphasis on men's hoops.

It is difficult enough for a member of a G5 league to annually be highly competitive in one of those two sports. But to be highly competitive in both the two major sports ... almost impossible. San Diego State and Memphis are attempting to be "nationally relevant" in both football and men's hoops. Whether either will be successful at doing so over the long term ...

This factor suggests a Sun Belt football program could emerge as the "dominant" G5 player — as no athletics program in that league places strong emphasis on men's basketball.

That's a very interesting comment, and when it comes to Big 12 expansion, being fairly strong in both FB and BB is something that all four of the Big 12 newbies had in common, to a greater or lesser degree. UC, UCF, UH, and BYU sent teams to recent NCAA tournaments and had top 25 football teams in 2019 or 2021-22.

Which of the other G5 schools have met, or come close to meeting these criteria?

................Post-season MBB tournament teams:.......Top 25 football teams:

SDSU...............2021 & 2022 NCAA teams.............2021 (#19 team)

Utah St..........2019 NIT & 2021 NCAA teams..........2021 (#24 team)

Louisiana...................2018 NIT team.................2020 (#15) & 2021 (#16)

Buffalo.....................2019 NCAA team..................2020 (#25 team)

C. Carolina......2021 CIT & 2022 TBC^ finalist.............2020 (#24 team)

Memphis........2021 NIT* & 2022 NCAA teams.........2019 (#17 team)

Boise St.........2021 NIT & 2022 NCAA teams..........2019 (#23 team)~

Appalachian St..........2021 NCAA team..................2019 (#19 team)~

..............................................................................................................

Programs ranked in the top 25 during the football season (2019-2021) that have also had post-season MBB teams:

.........................Post-Season MBB teams:.........ranked (FB) during season:

SMU...................2021 & 2022 NIT teams...........2019, 2020, & 2021 teams

Fresno St.......2022 TBC^ championship team................2021 team

Marshall.........2019 CIT championship team...................2020 team

^The Basketball Classic

~NOTE: SMU (FB) FINISHED THE 2019 SEASON RANKED #30TH IN THE MASSEY COMPOSITE.

..............................................................................................................

Three of these schools (Memphis, Boise St., & SDSU) are thought to be on the Big 12's expansion (round two) short list. However, some of the other schools listed above, such as Utah State (PAC-12?), and Louisiana (Big 12?) might have a shot at future P5 invitations if they can maintain a similar record of success over the next 5-10 years.

I believe that NIL should be a differentiator in the future…I went with SMU and and San Diego State. In the sleeper category, JMU has the financial commitment to be a strong program.

Good guess. I would be surprised if SMU doesn't have some sort of NIL payment program established.

Perhaps JMU will turn out to be a sleeper, but there are a few other FCS schools that seem to have sleeper potential, led (I believe) by NDSU.

That being said, it will be interesting to see if a bunch of other eastern/northeastern FCS schools (e.g., Delaware) will follow in JMU's footsteps. It may depend on how successfully JMU makes the transition to FBS.

Between now and 10 years, these are the ones from FCS and D2 that have not been mentioned if they moved up in all three money sports?
North Dakota State
South Dakota State
Missouri State
Chattanooga
Delaware
Stony Brook
North Carolina A&T
UCA
McNeese State
SFAU
Lamar (baseball)
West Texas A&M (all three sports have been pretty good, and if they joined the WAC? They could win conference championships in baseball and men's basketball.)
Central Oklahoma (had good football teams, but men's basketball and baseball is pretty good, and could be a threat in either Southland or WAC to win conference titles in those two sports.)
Colorado Mesa (Very strong football, mens basketball and baseball. Could do better in D1 than Northern Colorado could.)
Eastern Kentucky if football
Kennesaw State in football and basketball.
North Florida basketball, but they might add football and could benifit by playing in the pro stadium.

Out of the G5?
Wyoming
Air Force
New Mexico
Hawaii
UNR
Sam Houston State
Jacksonville State
Middle Tenneesee State
Toledo
Ohio
Buffalo
Western Michigan
Central Michigan
Northern Illinois
UAB
UTSA
Navy
SMU
North Texas
Southern Mississippi
ODU
Arkansas State
Army
UMASS have been on the edge to break through in football at times. Highest they were was 5-7.

All the pieces are in place for them to emerge the same way Utah did in the 2000's.

Both play in a growing state with no current P5 programs to compete with. UNLV has the additional advantage of playing in a brand new NFL stadium. It's only a matter of time.

Not an advantage as those home games are usually 2/3rds of 4/5ths empty.

Doesn't matter. Playing in a brand new NFL stadium in Las Vegas will be a major advantage for them - - IF AND ONLY IF UNLV STARTS PLAYING GOOD FOOTBALL. If they do that, their attendance will grow, and if they play in the PAC-12, their attendance in that NFL stadium will be terrific.

A strong case can be made that the idea that P5 conferences are dying to add teams that play their games in tiny 35,000 seat stadiums, just because they "don't look as empty" is fundamentally misguided.

Vegas is now an NFL town. That will be the "thing" to do go to Raider games. That stadium isn't a net add for UNLV. Playing in NFL stadiums hasn't helped USF, Temple, or even the U. You could actually say part of the decline of the U was when they lost the Orange Bowl. Pitt, which has a strong football history, hasn't benefited from losing their on campus stadium.

Schools such as Pitt and Temple have benefitted from playing in NFL stadiums. That's why they're still playing in NFL stadiums. Both of them had their own stadiums and chose to give them up for the advantages that playing in a NFL stadium offered them.

Temple had no choice. Pitt had a shortage of land and needed the space where the stadium was and it required a lot of work.

SMU, Houston, Tulane, UCF, Akron, Baylor, UAB, Minnesota and SDSU have all moved on campus in the recent past. Pitt is the only one I can think of going the other direction. USF is looking at it. UMass hasn't built a new stadium but moved back on campus. UNLV moved to a closer off campus stadium.
