College Football Fan Map
This is based on Twitter followers from Spring 2021.
The top-5 teams in each county are given here if you zoom in:
https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/m...ootballMap
Teams that are #1 in every county in their state: Arkansas, Delaware, Maine, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Nebraska, Wyoming, Hawai'i.
P5 schools that are not #1 in any county: Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke, Southern Cal
The majority of FCS schools are #1 in their own county. This map makes an argument that MVC/Big Sky/CAA/WAC are just as popular as MAC/Sun Belt/C-USA.
#1 and #2 schools in New York and Chicago: Michigan and Notre Dame. Michigan is also #2 in DC and #3 in San Francisco.

That's not what the map is inferring. That's you trying to project your personal thought onto something unrelated.
It's a cool map though.

What do you mean? This map is obviously saying that NDSU, SDSU, Maine, Delaware, Idaho, and Montana are many many many times more popular than a small insignificant team like Cincinnati.

NDSU can move up if they so desire, IMO. But they will have to jump to C-USA first. That's the price of admission to FBS. Same thing with the other teams unless they decide to go the independent route. I'm not saying that NDSU has to stay in C-USA forever if they jump to FBS, but I am saying that is where they will have to start out. From C-USA, NDSU can look to the MAC or the Mountain West.

"Chicago's Big Ten Team?" Well in Cook County, Michigan had 5969 and Illinois 5961, Michigan won by 8! Well Notre Dame actually won with 6446. Northwestern had 5030. Illinois did win nearby DuPage County.
Temple won Philadelphia County 29.5% to 23% but Penn State won Bucks County (almost 40%), Montgomery County (over 40%), and Delaware County (somehow Villanova finished in 2nd over Temple).
Pittsburgh got 52.3% of Allegheny County (PSU 22.3%). Cincinnati got 47% of Hamilton County (OSU 25.5%). This data shows both schools would have some value as opposed to Temple in Philly.

Eh, I'll reserve comment until Twitter reveals how many Bots are really on their platform. My guess is somewhere between 25% and 50%. Until then, I'll just forget this bogus map exists.

I suspect many students follow their own school. A twitter feed is an easy way to keep up with your school teams.
If the data was from Spring 2021 that would give an FCS bias to the data - but I don't see "Spring 2021" other than in the OP.

RE: College Football Fan Map
The Citadel is third here in Charleston County at 6.7% (854) but that number is definitely underestimated because of how old-leaning their fan base is. 90% of it is over 60.
In our county the division is South Carolina 39.4, Clemson 30.3, Citadel 6.7, Georgia 6.2, Alabama 4.8. Michigan and Ohio State would probably be in that Georgia/Bama territory.
Going through the different sports (he did a map for the four majors and the MLS along with CFB) it fits the patterns of the fan bases here. There’s barely any MLS fans (whatever soccer fans there are mostly root for the EPL and the USL Charleston Battery) but the NHL has the Pens, Bruins, Canes, Caps and Blackhawks all at 12-17% which fits here, and NBA is the same with 5 teams very close by.
The thing is you can see when players are on certain teams. Like the Panthers leading in some counties in AL based on Cam Newton.

That is a load of baloney about the FCS schools, IMO, and I looked at the map a lot, and several times too, I might add. The thing about those counties in FCS states aren't very populous, although I could make an exception for NDSU, and even they want out of FCS!!! You have to add up all of the fans around the surrounding counties for MAC/SunBelt/C-USA and then add up all of the fans in MVC/Big Sky/CAA/WAC in the surrounding counties as well. Yes, P5 teams do get a huge chunk of those fans in the SunBelt/MAC/C-USA areas, but what is leftover isn't exactly chopped liver either. Sheesh, I was actually pleasantly surprised how Jax State and UNA did (granted, they're FCS, but Jax State is going to be C-USA soon, and UNA has designs on FBS. I can see why now. Thank you UNA fans!!!) Even Robert Morris and Kennesaw State registered on this map, which to me was a shock!!! I just wish that I could make that map bigger so I could see it better!!!
I need to contact the guy who made the map and ask him if he could do one for college basketball. That would be very interesting, IMO.

Look at some of the #2 & #3 choices in Louisiana parishes. The UL Cajuns do pop up there around South central Louisiana. Only Tech & LSU led in any parish though.

Not sure, but Google seems to indicate that Troy University does have some support/extension centers in Georgia.

I'm not just looking at areas on the map. I'm zooming in to look at the numbers.
North Dakota State has far more followers in its home county (4,551) than any MAC, Sun Belt, or C-USA school.
Look at Youngstown State. It has more followers in its home county any Ohio MAC school other than Toledo. And YSU is top-5 in 7 counties, which is more than its neighboring MAC competitors Kent and Akron.
I'm not gloating over this - this map makes my own school look pitifully unimportant.
