Article on NIL at Ohio State
Found this article from Press Pros Magazine:
https://pressprosmagazine.com/you-cant-p...n-day-can/
I guess Ryan Day and Gene Smith had a meeting a little over two weeks ago at Ohio State. They gathered about 100 local businessmen in a room and guesstimated it will take $13 million in annual NIL compensation for OSU to hold its football roster together.

I'm not a finance guy at all, but I wonder how this goes over with the Dow being down 20% this year. Can you really give away millions, when your stock is in the pooper? I have no idea.

Is it going to become like political donations, where everyone can see who contributed?

RE: Article on NIL at Ohio State
Good article. But every time I read something about NIL it saddens me. Decades of misery has turned me into a half glass full kind of person when it comes to Cincinnati sports. So my outlook on NIL is that this could be the beginning of the end of college athletics in general and more-so for Bearcat athletics. UC was always behind with their poor conference affiliation and revenue. And now NIL just widens that gap. How long before Fickell sees that winning at UC is unsustainable without big time NIL money and looks for greener pastures. Lets hope UC has more big money committed boosters than I think they do.

Correlation, but not necessarily causation.
I doubt it's the first time OSU got a couple of 5 stars in a week's time. I'm no fan of that school up I-71 but they've been recruiting well for decades and at a pretty elite level during the CFP years.
I'm not convinced NIL will be the end of college sports as we know it or that this evolves into 25 programs that are essentially a collegiate version of the NFL. Any business investing in this way will have to see value to an NIL deal and that's yet to be determined. A poor ROI on NIL deals will sink this ship fast. I'm not sure fans will rush out to buy new cars--even t-shirts, because a collegiate player's endorsement or image is present. We all have favorite players at the collegiate level but unlike many pro teams these players cycle through in a fairly short timeframe. We cheer for them, but our first loyalty is to our university and its teams.
So color me skeptical about the dystopian view of NIL being bantered about right now.

That's where I am too, but I guess we're going to find out.
How much of the new money that is flowing in for NIL is just donations in another form? It doesn't seem all that likely to me that OSU boosters have had the ability to pay another $13 mil. a year but the OSU administration has been unable or unwilling to get it from them until NIL came along.

I'd probably say that it had more to do with 2 first round WR picks this year, and 2 more lined up be 1st rounders next year. I'm sure they need to be competitive on the NIL front, but if that's a non-issue, I can't see a 5* WR not having them on their short list these days.

Day makes north of $9 mill a year. Maybe he should donate a portion of his salary back into the program.

It would seem to bode well for the future of their passing game.
No doubt, the Buckeye faithful weren't happy about being on the outside looking in at last season's CFP. Especially with Michigan there--and even more insulting to many of them, Cincinnati.
So if OSU misses the CFP this coming season does Day's seat quickly get hot?
