You can be sure that whatever system that is finally adopted it will be massively tilted in favor of the big power conferences like we see with the Mens BB Tournament. Should be no surprises there.

10+ or bust

After realignment, I'd be pretty surprised if SBC champ was not one of the top 8 conference champs most years. Would just need to be ranked higher than MAC and CUSA champs. 8+8 could work out well.

I'm not against 10+6, just don't see it going through. The power conferences want the opposite, and 8+8 is a middle ground. 6+6 seems more likely than 10+6, 8+8 gives them 2 more at large.

Part of this depends also if they do anything before CFP expires. Prior to expiration, every conference has veto power. Once CFP expires, that no longer applies.

Exactly, 8+8 is a model where everyone will be pretty happy. Plus the bottom two conference champs will probably be pretty weak anyway so it seems like a good balance both in order to make everyone happy and just in practice. Last year it would've meant:

Autobids:
1. Alabama
2. Michigan
3. Cincinnati
4. Baylor
5. Utah
6. Pitt
7. Louisiana
8. Utah State?

The last three conference champions were Utah State, UTSA, and Northern Illinois. None of these were in the final CFP Top 25 so I'm not sure who ranked highest but I would assume Utah State.

At large:
1. Georgia
2. Notre Dame
3. Ohio State
4. Ole Miss
5. Oklahoma State
6. Michigan State
7. BYU
8. Oregon

Is it really so bad to let 10-2 BYU and 10-3 Oregon in over letting the CUSA and MAC champs get smoked? A strong enough conference champ to deserve a spot will get in anyway, a lot of times the last two at large spots won't be all that strong either but maybe sometimes it'll be a strong team that dealt with a very key injury or two.

I don't know, I just don't see either one as significantly better than the other if I try to look at it from a neutral perspective instead of flat out what's best for the SBC. 8+8 does seem much more likely to get everyone on board though.

One other thing that jumps out to me though with either of these, it'd be nice to see some restriction on when the window opens to hire a new coach along with this. Imagine if Louisiana was headed to the playoffs last year while Napier was off to Gainesville.

What makes me optimistic about something like an 8+8 or similar developing is most of the financing for this comes from the media deals (eg: ESPN and friends). ESPN is seeing positive return on their SBC investment, and I think will want to keep this conference relevant. They've been increasing their support because its a bargain for them compared to what the bigger conferences are demanding.

Not sure if this is something the NCAA/FBS can solve with rules/legislation, though it is a problem. The recruiting calendar windows can have an impact, thats part of what started the mess with coaches jumping before seasons ended. The other thing is I think some schools may push for coaching contract terms that heavily penalize leaving mid-season or prior to end of playoffs.

I wouldn't be fully optimistic on that. One of the main reasons the B1G helped tank the expansion vote last year was because it would have meant just renewing the CFP with only ESPN as the media partner. Now that that option wasn't used, it's likely that conferences want Fox or someone else alongside ESPN as the CFP media partners. So it won't just be ESPN trying to raise the profile on their own properties.

Let’s not forget that the parent company of ESPN is ABC. If the discussions to expand the D1 CFP provoke/evoke the desire to have other networks involved let those other networks pony-up and “show us the money.”

More money will surely flow (mostly) to the P2/3/5 (or whatever shakes out after the dust settles), however, the SBC will also benefit. A rising tide floats all boats.

A 16 team D1 CFP (so long as there’s some slots made available/reserved for the current G5s) is a good thing, and I don’t really care what network broadcasts the games. In the end FB fans will pay $$$ for it all.

Most opposing fans hate him because he's a little too honest and can ramble. He doesn't have the best media presence, but he wins so far, so it's hard to complain.
