"DENTON, Texas – North Texas Athletics will construct a new Unity Plaza honoring trailblazers Abner Haynes and Dr. Leon King, the first Black players to integrate major college football at a four-year university in Texas, the department announced Thursday."

I thought this news might break at our Spring Game, but was glad our athletic department kept in under wraps until now. There is more news to this story coming out over the next two months. I'll post it when it is appropriate.

I don't think SMU fans ever thought that, we had the first black player in the SWC, not Texas.
Very cool memorial, will look forward to seeing it when it is completed.

Oh, I had an email exchange with a sports writer down in Port Arthur a few years back. He was 100% sure Jerry Levias(?) was the first black major college player in Texas. I had to set him straight.
BTW, Levias was a helluva football player!

Glad you like it. I'm hoping the unveiling will be on Sept 3rd, when SMU opens their season at UNT.
