All seats between the 40 yard lines all the way to the top behind the visiting bench should be student seats. Put the band about a third of the way up in that section. That would increase excitement at the game by a factor of double or triple.

Make certain that the stupid advertising games the students take part in pay off significantly. Every participant receives $100 credit at student book store, and winners get $1000 scholarship certificates for fees and tuition, and there should always be winners. This alone will get many more students to pick up their free tickets.

Have a drawing at the end of every home game with awards of more $100 to $500 certificates. Winner must be present to collect. Students would stay til the end of the game.

Make it fun and worth their while and just maybe they might become Tiger fans. If they are fans they might come to games after graduation.

All of this should have happened 20 years ago, but if it happens now it would payoff big time in the next 10 to 15 years. Maybe sooner!

Putting several thousand energetic 18 to 22 year olds in the middle of Liberty Stadium gets her out of the unexciting group of arenas. And builds fans for the future.

None of this is too expensive. The companies that get their products advertised now would foot the bill for the certificates. There are some fans who buy season tickets (not that many really) in that section who would have to move over 1 section but they would get a more exciting environment. The seats where the students sit now could be the walk up cheap seats. Student fans should be a priority, not an after thought! Making students more important would make it more important to students!

Quote:Stop treating them like red headed step children! All seats between the 40 yard lines all the way to the top behind the visiting bench should be student seats.

Have 500 students sit in an area with 10,000 seats and relegate the 20% of the fanbase that funds 80% of it, to seats outside of the 40 yard line. Tell the boosters that they still have to contribute $5,000 - $100,00 per year, but they have to sit at the 39 yard line next to seats that are 95% empty.

If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny. You keep outdoing yourself. 03-lmfao01-wingedeagle 04-drinky

RE: How to make Tiger football more important to students
The real takeaway from this thread is much deeper.

In 1977-8 I was on the Student Council. Increasing student involvement in football games was a topic and task at that time.

Same for the Residence Hall Association.

A few following years, the same issue was discussed at the fraternity council.

Since then, there have been countless initiatives and ideas by both the students, the athletic department, and the administrations.

Here we are talking about the same problem again.

And we still get practically run off the board for saying an OCS is the answer. It was then. It is now.

Please. If they can’t walk to the stadium. Really? I remember the fraternity busses and post game parties. They were well attended. I even remember riding back on the Pike bus by mistake…quite a ride. Find a better excuse.

Our fanbase has problems.

Student support in recent years is not one.

How to make Tiger football more important to students
As a student 96-00, I was at every football game. Pregamed like a champ, and then went in with my whiskey. Great times. Helped tear down a goal post against UT.

Redzone seating is good enough. Over in the corner, just a stone's throw from the visitor's bench.

I agree with you 100%. If the school wanted to make student participation a priority they'd have looked into building OC facilities for football/basketball. All these people replying about back when they went to college in the 80's-late 90's have to realize the target group has changed astronomically. If you haven't noticed all the delivery services in the past few years starting up, even pre-covid. Younger kids seem to want convenience, and waiting on a shuttle/paying for parking/driving are very inconvenient. Winning helps a lot, but student participation will never be close to that of in conference schools like UCF without OC facilities.

Wining isn't the only thing, and it isn't even everything. Football is one thing for the players and coaches. It is something else for the tv viewers, and it is something else for the fans in attendance. Liberty stadium is consistently rated one of the worst stadiums in which to watch a game. The reason cited is not its location or the stadium itself. The reason cited is lack of enthusiasm. True poor attendance (under 50%) is partially responsible for this, but that attendance is self perpetuating as long as the administration does not take a long view of what can be done to improve this problem.

The short term choice to keep the center of the visitors side stands for sale to the general public does not demonstrate a desire on the part of the administration to improve the experience for all the fans. Season ticket sales do not demonstrate any financial benefit for this choice. Actually season tickets sales in the north end zone demonstrate those in the south end zone could also be attractive seating for families and thus easier to market.

The sparsity of fans in the seats on the east side of the stadium affect the impression of tv viewing fans of the quality of the program. Putting students in the center and discounting season tickets pricing for the east side would help. Some might even move from the west side to the east side just for the financial savings. Everything that is done to improve the excitement inside the stadium would be good for ticket sales in the long run.

The remodeling of Liberty Stadium is as much an effort to enhance fan excitement as it is an attempt to enhance the possibility of an invitation to a more exciting conference. I hope the first consideration in the remodel is the improvement of the sound system. Right now it is painful for those on the south end and merely irritating for those in the north end. Quality speakers placed all around Liberty Stadium would end the discomfort and help create more excitement also.

You do not know the history of Tiger Basketbal and student supportl. As far as walking distance goes I would venture to say as many students live in walking distance to Liberty Stadium as live in walking distance to campus. And the ones who live on campus don't have to walk they can ride a shuttle bus the University already provides. Probably many would park on campus to ride the free student shuttle rather than pay to park at the stadium. Especially if the drop off location was at a spot across Hollywood near the east entrance to Liberty Stadium and there was free food and drink and maybe a band for people with a student ID.

Unless there are a few thousands students squatting inside the Mid-South Coliseum, you’d be wrong.

Considering most students do not live on campus, and do not live very close to campus, it is likely as many live as close to Liberty Stadium as live close to campus. And that includes all the residents of the dorms. To paraphrase the bard, there are more things under heaven and earth than are dreamt of in Browning Hall. Remember that line of Hamlet is coming from one student addressed to another.

In 2020, we had roughly 3000 students living in university affiliated housing. Let’s add a very conservative 1000 in non-university affiliated off-campus housing for arguments sake. That’s 4000 or 23% of undergraduates. You say more than 4000 live under a mile from the Liberty Bowl. Where do they live (combined were up to half of all undergraduates)?

Yeah, that was a very uninformed statement he made. And with the recent apartment builds around campus, I'd say the numbers are even higher within walking distance to campus. And much higher than within walking distance to LBMS.

You all could be correct, but mid town is a very popular area for students to live and very many students live in-between the memphis country club and Liberty Stadium. Also there are many students who live in orange mound parts of which are closer to Liberty Stadium than campus.

I went to South Carolina. Stadium is not on campus. Student section was often filled (then often gone by halftime depending on the game). There are things to do to have students come to the game. Most of them do bus in from nearby locations and they have student made tailgating sections filled with vendors. Logistics really don’t matter for student engagement. They will come if you’re winning and providing a great atmosphere in and around the stadium. The incoming renovations will be great in adding that, plus the things added around the stadium. (Once again, if I were the university, I would try to build a luxury student living apartments on the land as USC has near their stadium).

Students often road shuttles to the game. It was free, less congested than parking near the stadium, and did I mention free? Get to the stadium and go to the student tailgating section. There will always be students to coordinate beer if needed.

Maybe South Carolina students shrugged because they were going to go see Florida or Tennessee or Georgia.

you'll never appeal to a casual student-fan by making football/mbb inconvenient. with the horrific rise in inflation, I would think student participation will be even less this season.
