The nickname "49ers" derives from the fact that the university's predecessor—Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC – established in 1946) was saved from being shut down by the state in 1949 by Bonnie Cone, when CCUNC became Charlotte College. Due to this "49er spirit" that Cone felt embodied the university, referring to the settlers that endured much hardships in traveling across the United States to seek fortune in the California Gold Rush, students of the fledgling UNC Charlotte chose "49ers" as the school's mascot. The fact that the University's Main Campus front entrance is located on North Carolina Highway 49 is pure coincidence.
Prior to the "49ers" moniker, the athletic teams were known as the "Owls" due to CCUNC's beginnings as a night school.
Yes

clt says that is correct, Bonnie’s spirit is with us all.
It should also mention that we are not far away from the United States' first gold rush site.

The AAC added a proven performer in a small market and just made their schedule harder so they got worse (ECU).
They also added a shi**y team with a smaller following, but in a bigger market with more potential, that simply threw more resources at their program.
I think most fans on this board would agree that adding the sad looking plant off the clearance shelf and watering it with money and exposure was the better choice. Now they are doing it all over again, and they picked the Memphis options (UTSA/UNCC) over the ECU options (App/ULaLa).
I'm kind of new around here, but is Tiger1983 always this mopey? I know that Memphis hoops was 0-5 in Halton Arena when we were both in CUSA 1.0, so maybe that is his problem with us. Maybe he just needs a hug.

I think you'll find we play a significantly different style of ball since the last time Charlotte gave us a hard time 18 years ago. You sport 1 winning season in football, and your second stint in C-USA 2.0 hasn't been great in basketball. I really hope schools like Charlotte can benefit from getting to a "better" conference. We need the AAC to send multiple programs to Bowl Games and the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately the 3 programs leaving were good at getting national exposure for the conference. As being one of the few remaining AAC schools that has been in the national spotlight since the conference's inception, I hope the incoming schools can help with exposure, and bring a level of competition that helps not only the conference, but Memphis specifically.
GTG!
They seriously brought up crap from 18 years ago?
No kidding! It would be like me ragging on Cincy since we beat them in Denton in 1967 while we were both members of the Missouri Valley Conference!

CUSA 1.0 was legit. Still remember Calipari crying over Charlotte making the NCAA tourney over Memphis, even though Charlotte had just beat Memphis. Good times. Hopefully the Niners can get back to that level, but not with the current coach.

we are normally around 6k for attendance. as you can see in the article above, 2022 wasn't a normal year.

The article is behind a paywall. I welcome highlights buttressing your point.
According to Charlotte's website, the average attendance per game during the 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 seasons (pre-COVID) was 4,085.

RE: Worst new add
The Charlotte 49ers will resume allowing fans to attend home basketball games at Halton Arena, beginning this week. Athletics officials said the change goes into effect Wednesday when the 49ers’ men’s basketball team hosts Old Dominion. Tipoff is 7 p.m. The 49ers had limited attendance to families of coaches and players since late December, when the number of COVID-19 cases began spiking with the spread of the highly contagious omicron variant. The 49ers haven’t played before home fans since their Dec. 22 game against Western Carolina. Capacity attendance will be permitted at Halton Arena for the remainder of the men’s and women’s seasons, 49ers’ officials said. The mask policy remains in effect. Fans, ages 5 or older, must wear masks during the games, except when eating or drinking. The first women’s basketball game with fans will be Saturday when Charlotte hosts Old Dominion. The 49ers men’s team (10-7, 3-2 Conference USA) are 7-1 at home this season. Charlotte and Old Dominion had been scheduled to play at Halton Arena on Jan. 8, but the game was postponed due to health and wellness concerns in the ODU program. 49ers’ officials said tickets, parking passes and hospitality packages purchased for that Jan. 8 game will be honored Wednesday.

Thanks. In sum, inane CV-19 policy depressed attendance.

At least Tulsa wins stuff sometimes. Rice is Tulsa without religion and without the wins
Tulsa ain't got no religion. It's Presbyterian in name only.
If you asked any student over the past 30 years, they likely wouldn't even know it was affiliated with the Presbyterian religion. When it changed from Henry Kendall to University of Tulsa in 1907, the affiliation quickly became name only. We ain't Liberty.
