RE: Coach Cignetti gives zero damns
Not even just the run game, but the difference in Cole's consistency with and without Fornadel was huge. Of course the threat of the run game makes a difference there too, but the pass protection wasn't always the best either. Then yeah, the inability to get a yard or two up the middle in those short yardage situations was pretty brutal at times.

I'm optimistic that being thrown to the wolves will pay off for the rest of these guys' JMU careers though. We'll see.

The injuries to the OL did have a negative impact on running the football last year, as did the loss of JMU’s top RBs. The extended play of younger OL players last year could pay dividends this season, but it will have to be
proven on the field.

Getting a healthy Percy back will be big, as will Black. If the RB room stays healthy the running attack will get its yards, and the offense will score enough points to lead JMU to a winning first season in FBS.

Go Dukes!

oh that is the worst stat-graphic-opinion ever possibly....(a bunch of those only have one FBS team in the state!)

still, we're in good company with many P5s - take it as a win and some motivation for now!

We were depleted there and were forced to start underclassmen, some of them true freshmen. And, IMO, they shined. DEPTH! Those youngsters are now veterans and some will be 2-deep (the Coastal transfer is going to be a star and leader). I expect Cig to sub a lot (DEPTH!) to keep fresh bodies on the line.

Cole Johnson, the most unathletic quarterback to start at JMU in a very long time, attempted over 30 passes per game last year, completing 68% for 41 touchdowns, 4 picks. Yet, he was sacked less than three times per game. So, that indicates an offensive line that "struggled?" Really?

Furthermore, we averaged 4.2 yards per tote running the ball last year. That is a first down every series, folks. Latrele Palmer, who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards last year, averaged 5 yards per carry. So, the offensive line struggled?

Remember Nooch's first year at QB under Mike Houston. Nooch, one of the more athletic quarterbacks we have had, spent most of that season on his ass because our OL (coaching) was so terrible. Cig comes in and with the very same OL, turns them into superstars and Nooch gets drafted and is now making a million bucks a year with the Cowboys. That's the difference a good coach can make.

Cig is going to have our boys ready to play. Our offensive line is going to be very good and very deep. With our talent and DEPTH! at RB, we are going to be just fine. I am not the least bit worried unless the injury bug really attacks us. But, every team, no matter how deep, has to deal with that. We were at the top of FCS where we were playing toe-to-toe with P5s (WVU and NC State) and beating G5s.

Could not agree more.....not sure where all this the oline struggled last year is coming from.....i was also pleased with the oline and the way the young guys stepped up and performed. It only set us up better going forward.

The coaches. They said they couldn't run the ball as effectively due to injuries.

Yup- from the horse's mouth. The eye test on short yardage/ goal line plays and the overall stats bore it out as well.
Yards per rushing attempt since Withers/ Houston/ Cignetti came on board:
2021: 4.2
2021: 4.7
2019: 5.0
2018: 4.7
2017: 4.6
2016: 5.5
2015: 5.5
2015: 4.8

The differences between the previous lowest average (compared to last year), as well as the prior 7 year mean, are statistically significant.

A lot of young guys got a good amount of early experience being thrown to the wolves. That will help, along with the expected off season improvements in strength and technique. And I do believe that Centeio being a run threat will loosen things up as well. But to me, to call the O-line a strength is a stretch. I truly hope I'm wrong and that these guys come out firing.

Cignetti wants to run the ball. We will need better push this year, especially in situations where the whole stadium knows a run is likely. We have a great coach to teach them. Question in my mind is do we currently have the talent level to execute it against higher caliber defenders? Time will tell.

Anyway, I am tremendously excited that camp is starting. Hope to be hearing reports that our line has turned into a bunch of roadgrading steamrollers. Go Dukes! 04-cheers

note: I realize there will be those who say the comparison to prior seasons is unfair because CJ was not much of a runner and the totals get dragged down. But in 2017, Schor had 146 carries for a 2.2 yd average. CJ last year had 86 carries for a 2.7 yd average.

Yes, 2 yard difference between Cole (2.7) and Nooch (4.7).

I just don't think a 4.2 YPC average is "struggling." That leaves you with two downs to get 1.6 yards.

Among notable teams last year that had worse YPC averages were Alabama and UVA, both at 4.1

I'm not exactly sure what that even means, but, uh, thanks for the lesson.... I guess.

And, I'm not asking that my "school of thought be taken as Gospel." I just posted stats that I considered relevant to the discussion. You know, stats, i.e., facts.

Cignetti has to be grinning from ear to ear. Blow that tweet up and post it all over the locker room.
