Here are the highlights of an article penned by Mark Giannotto of the CA. My asides are in
blue.
1. Pera bought the Griz for $377 million. The Griz are now worth $1.5 billon.
It represents nearly 300% return on investment over ten years.
2. Ten years ago, Pera was a new billionaire. Now he is one of the ten richest sports owners.
3. Ten years ago, he stated “I look forward to getting to know the Memphis community', but if so he has done it is remotely and without public involvement - especially lately.
4. Pera's hire of wunderkind Kleiman three years ago has paid dividends.
5. The Griz lease is up in 2029. It is an "inevitability" the city will have to cough up hundreds of millions of dollars to retain the Griz.
Yes, hundreds of millions of dollars is the correct amount MG cited.
6. Pera has never said he wants to move from Memphis and negotiations about the current lease shortfall indicates Pera is willing to work with the city.
7. Pera could calm fears the Griz will move by renewing the clause expiring in 2027 that grants local owners the first right of refusal. He could do it now, but has declined.
8. MG sees Pera's detachment as a plus instead of what was perceived a flaw. People are use to him, it might be his best owner trait, and it is better than the unknown.
