Also, Memphis was probably the only town with a state supported college that had an existing municipal football stadium. I'm sure Crump was looked at as a budget friendly alternative, at least, and likely as a much better stadium than what an OCS would have been at the time. (I don't remember the history, i.e., whether the Tigers played on a previous municipal field prior to Crump or at the old practice field.)

I recall there was talk of the city expanding Crump as opposed to building Memphis Memorial Stadium. There were several sec games that did not include Memphis State that were played at Crump.

There was. They scrapped the plan to expand Crump and built Memorial Stadium instead.

The "they" of course were the city movers & shakers. Our university has NEVER been the focus of a stadium initiative in the city of Memphis, but it has ALWAYS been a necessary component to bring financial viability to the projects. And, unfortunately, our university has always been all too willing to play its assigned role. In the current situation, the die was cast the moment the city unilaterally signed a contract with Simmons. From that moment, the city was never going to seriously consider or support an OCS for our university. And, as usual, our university took its place as the financial means for the city to have its stadium renovated & of course to also become the guaranteed tenant to pay the way.

And BTW, I do not share the idea that a B-12 invite will serve to increase giving to our athletics programs, at least not outside of increased attendance. An OCS would have substantially increased giving apart from tickets - every study has confirmed that getting alumni back on campus 6+ times a year increases alumni giving, not renting a municipal facility off-campus.

I have a hard time believing the people writing the big checks wouldn't have a looser pen for an OCS. It's easier to get donations when those donating, no matter the amount, believe that their money is going to a good cause. They're basically writing a check to the City to improve the CITY's facilities, not the Tigers.

That's exactly what's happening. Exceptions might be folks that also have a vested interest in the city like FedEx who strives to maintain a good relationship with the city more than supporting our university.

It's unfortunate that the inability to get funding for this will look bad when the next round of conference realignment is brought to fruition likely in a few years. The school needs to put a plan in motion to get people excited about the football program. Winning definitely helps on a short term basis, as winning for long periods has shown to be difficult at Memphis. I have never understood why you rent a facility when you're anchored to a location for likely forever. Plus a sense of ownership goes a long way in terms of upkeep and upgrades.

likely quite a few, as the renovations to the LBMS are likely going to cost more than half of what an OCS would cost, while also appearing like a very short-sided decision with minimal upside. I believe they will have a much harder time getting the necessary funding to start this project, than what would be necessary to start an OCS project. I would benefit the school if they would release the extent of the study that was compiled that lead them to such a decision. A lot of people are, and should be, skeptical that the school may have been strong-armed into the decision. For all we know, the city could have threatened the school with a termination of the contract we're under allowing us the use of LMBS, leaving the football program without a facility for a few years. That definitely would have hurt us. The city owning the facilities puts us in a very bad position, especially since there's no other options for a football facility in the area.

The Daily Memphian said they have a copy of the 90 page study.

They referenced it only once that I saw, but I don't have a full subscription.

2025 is not delayed - that's always been the target date. And that aligns with our goal to get stadium renovations complete.
Some were hoping for an early exit, but right now nothing has been announced there.

As for stadium funding and progress, do you expect a message board update every day?
Just because you haven't heard anything doesn't mean nothing is happening.

while true, the buzz around the renovations seem small compared to the IPF when the plans were released for it.

Infinitely more articles about this than the IPF; it's not even close. Speaking of which, still waiting on your link to the article where it says that the school spent $41 million on LB upgrades.

The upgrades were proposed around $50 million, the city council approved $9 million of that.

We are getting a reno to the LB stadium. NEXT....

I get a colonoscopy every few years too. I don't like either and will complain if I want.

But you still get it in the end...

Are we really? Well, the 'next' would be, "how's that funds raising going..."? Crickets.... how's that process management going? Crickets.....

It was proven that winning on a short term basis has zero to do with anything----when we were not #2 on everybody's list
