The traffic on this message board has diminished greatly from when I first began reading stuff on here nearly 20 years ago. I didn’t start posting for a while, but the enthusiasm and overall positive outlook of the early 2000’s has been replaced with mostly negativity, apathy and almost every discussion turning into petulant back-and-forth.

I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on this, but I just get a sense that the majority of tiger fans are at the “2 tears in a bucket mother fudge it” phase of their fandom.

BigD,

I think three things have reduced the board traffic above having a frustrated fan base.
1. The negative, attack, snarky posters the ruin threads and derail threads,
2. Personal battles played out day after day in thread after thread, and
3. The lack of knowledgeable posters.

At least those 3 things have caused my extended breaks.

Please add a #4 - threads that turn political, which most do.

The inability to give any alternative view or opinion without being bashed has reduced my visits greatly and pretty much removed any desire to post.

I dont come here much now, because there is so much information available elsewhere. This used to be the best place for an out-of-towner to find out what’s going on, but now that info & discussions are available on Twitter, FB (which I avoid), online papers, podcasts. Then, you have the endless catfights on here between posters & there’s just not much to come here for. It has NOTHING to do with lower enthusiasm about Tiger Athletics. Maybe, the mods need to toss the @ssholes if they want to improve the neighborhood. 04-chairshot

Haha I’m trying! I promise. And DEFINITELY agree we are deserving. It’s ridiculous we were left out of the latest go- round. I’m convinced if given a chance we would do extremely well. I’m just concerned that there are fewer and fewer seats left on the train, and she’s about to leave the station.

My sentiments exactly.

We've lost many posters to time (we don't live forever) and a period starting a few years ago that allowed too many "negative nellies" to dominate too many threads.

Many of the well-connected posters have simply given up on the board and have moved on, but it doesn't necessarily mean they've lost interest in Tiger sports.

Ouch. I doubt many here will know what you are referring to. He was however a great player. Below are NFL records he holds:

Most seasons played by a defensive player: 20 (tied with Darrell Green and Junior Seau)
Most complete seasons played by a defensive player: 20
Most consecutive games played by a defensive player: 282
Most consecutive regular-season games played by a defensive player: 270
Most consecutive game starts by a defensive player: 270
Most consecutive regular-season starts played by a defensive player: 270
Most fumbles recovered: 30
Most opponent's fumbles recovered: 29
Most yardage lost on a fumble recovery: 66

It is easy to be discouraged after being left out each time there is a discussion about expansion, and then seeing 3 of your conference mates make that jump.

But things are better than they have been in regard to the programs. Hard to believe we have been in the FedEx Forum for almost 20 years. The Liberty Bowl is going to be drastically remodeled.

The AAC is never going to be the same, but we need to take care of business and own it.

I have been posting on this board of whatever it was called for 22 years now. There have certainly been worse times.

Go Tigers.

The AAC is what you make of it.
It dramatically improved the profile of the Memphis football program...as well as the other programs (UCF, SMU, Houston, Cinci) that have taken advantage of that.
The newer programs who will be joining may be able to make similar jumps in building their programs...so that eventually...the AAC can be as strong as it was before the defections.
That is the hope anyway.
I wish we had taken USM instead of Rice... I will never understand that one.
Rice will never have a big impact in the Houston area in major sports such as football or basketball.

I was surprised to see he’s not in the Hall of Fame, especially with how long he played.

Not going to opine on any issue but the negativity. I don't believe you can tie that into any undue frustration of Tiger fans. Don't know if you spend much time on other boards but, it's the same EVERYWHERE. People are just basically sh!ts. You're right. A ton of great former posters are just that .. former. Just got tired of being attacked and jumped by folks who would probably be better served by going out in their yards and pulling the wings off butterflies. Truly, our culture is a shell of its former self.

I agree with you AND BIGDTiger.

I think we are a burnt out lot of fans, but I also think our best days are ahead of us.

I think it depends on the sport. I am not sure I would say that football is burnt out If anything, it appears to have been revitalized. Certainly from a recruting standpoint, we continue to recruit at a level far above what we used to expect. And from a facilities standpoint, we have also improved greatly as we have from the standpoint of bowl participation

If being in the same conference as Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA - which Memphis will be in just 13 months - doesn't make one tired, I don't know what will.

Unfortunately for us....one of the teams on that list, UTSA has emerged as a real threat. They have one of the most fertile recruiting areas in the country in Austin and San Antonio and are doing a great job of keeping players home.

(06-10-2022 09:25 PM)covingtontiger Wrote:  Y’all should have been Tiger football fans during the 70 or 80 years when Rip Scherer was our football coach. Those were the bad old days.

Course correction for those who do not know history:

In 1963 Tiger football was at an all time high, we finished the season ranked 15th in the very at the time prestigious AP poll, we went undefeated and tied Ole Miss in the first game whom the previous year was the NCAA Champion. We had an All-American RB who Sports Illustrated featured...had over 1000 rushing at the time which was unheard of.

During the 60s, we were an excellent football team that most of the SEC team feared. That leads us into the 70's, where again Memphis State excelled until the very late 78/79 seasons when there was a player boycott between white and black players one black player was not getting paid his weekly hand shake. That completely divided the team.

During the tenure of the mid 70s Memphis State was as talented as most top tier SEC teams. The talent on those teams was nothing short of impressive. Heck we had 3 "Keith's" taken in the NFL draft. Keith Butler (still today the leading tackler for Seattle), Keith Simpson (Hamilton HS and Seattle as well) and finally Keith Wright who was all NFL rookie and lead the AFC in punt return yardage among the few.

Richard Williams took over in the late 70s, who was he - the other QB at Alabama when Joe Namath was at Alabama, he was also the "hand picked" successor by the Bear to take over - his challenges at Memphis denied him that throne - again one of the two times players boycotted the team. Richard Williams went on to coach in the NFL who had a few asst hc coach positions as being well know as one of the top two or three WR coaches in the NFL, his tenure was around 18 or so years in the NFL.

1980s our beloved HC died in a plane crash...that doesn't happen we rock the 80s. For the first time our talent was on par with most SEC teams at that time, minus Georgia and Alabama - the NFL talent was mind boggling at the time.

NOTE: For those who do not know -the schedule in the 60s was 10 games regular season and 11 games in the 70s and 80s and most of the 90s - of those Memphis State typically played a minimum of 2 to 3 SEC games most of the time 3 to 5 SEC games plus games vs Florida State, Texas AM, USC etc

NOTE: Imagine if we had those teams vs todays schedule... a 6-5 Memphis team playing 4 to 5 sec teams, Michigan, Florida state was kick ass.

So, Tiger football in the 70s and 80s minus a few years of transition was without question pretty damned good football with some freaking amazing players and coaches who were incredible.

Now you get into the more current "modern" era of football of the 2000s...BTW when Rip Scheer was hired...not in the 70s or 80s.....

Rip for all of his negative post by people had some really good teams not record wise etc - but do people even remember once or twice we finished 2 or 3rd in conference...out of conference we played again 3 to 5 SEC teams, Florida State rinse repeat....BTW, he beat Tennessee...got it...fluke...he was also the closest to beat them two other times - we should have beaten UT 3 out of 4 games in the late 90s
and early 2000s

I don't know your view on Tiger Football History but mine is very different than yours...It would be good for all younger people to read the actual history of Tiger football.

So, no Rip was not our coach during the 70s or 80s and they were terrific teams.

A retro fitted stadium is better than nothing at this point. It's our only hope to hang onto possibly and I say possibly the next moves, if we do not do this - we are left behind.

For all of those complaining, I hope you change your mind...I can tell you, you will be envious of all of us attending the opening game that season - once they figure out what that season will it will be tremendous.

Yes, a lot of posters who really know a lot of real/big info have departed here - seems to be an infection of people jealous of those who do know things then attack those who share things because "they" don't know.

This board has a personality of 13 year old's on a playground after school, lot of immature posters who make personal attacks vs good conversation.

It is what it is.

The history above can be looked up, I did it by memory after I read the post about how bad our football was in the 70s and 80s...

I can't get beyond being in a conference with UNCC and whatever Florida school joined. I honestly can never remember which one it is without looking it up. Games with them won't pull 20,000.

Nice history lesson, but I’m not so sure he wasn’t saying that Rip’s tenure seemed to last 70-80 yrs. At least, that’s how I read it. Covington has been around for a while.

RE: Memphis Tiger Nation Is Tired
Tiger Athletics is surging. Our future is bright. We missed by a hair getting into an equity conf. We will be in one sooner or later. Our school continues to grow and achieve. Go Tigers! I enjoy reading about the Univ everyday.

But

This board is dying and probably needs a rest. My feeling is this is the longest its gone under one 'regime'. Not sure how it gets fixed. The conversation tone on this board reflects the current societal 'Gap' in our country and the general degradation and lack of civility between individuals. Leaving our admins; who have noble and good intentions; the only option of taking the heavy handed approach of suspending or banning posters and re-organizing threads incessantly as the only way to deal with posters who have come here to demean, insult and bait vs inform, debate and promote public discourse.

I read an article from the Atlantic proposing a method to policing social media. The gist of the article is that groups managing smaller segments of the conversation can regulate better than AI or a few minds (people) on the same topic. Maybe there is a message for the board in here somewhere. I leave it to our bright admins. Good Luck.
