The traffic on this message board has diminished greatly from when I first began reading stuff on here nearly 20 years ago. I didn’t start posting for a while, but the enthusiasm and overall positive outlook of the early 2000’s has been replaced with mostly negativity, apathy and almost every discussion turning into petulant back-and-forth.

I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on this, but I just get a sense that the majority of tiger fans are at the “2 tears in a bucket mother fudge it” phase of their fandom.

I can't think of a better time to be a Tiger fan and I've been going to BB and FB games since 1989. While nothing is perfect and we still have lots of room to grow, we are in good hands.

Go out on campus and look at how beautiful our campus is compared to the early 80's. 8 straight FB bowl games.... come on man, that's never happened. And, Penny is turning our BB program around.

This board is full of a bunch of negative nellies, which is probably why traffic has dropped. It's really pathetic. Call me a sunshine pumper, but I sure like where we're headed vs Shirley and RC days.

We may not make the next B12 cut and maybe we will. I think we are positioned with the LB reno to make the jump. Time will tell.

Academically, President SR laid the foundation for the genius of President Rudd to succeed.

But athletically, the SR/RC combo sheit the bed, especially on football. JMHO

Would we have ever gotten our own Board of Regents without Calipari? Wasn't he pretty vocal about the need for changes in governance? Or is that my bad memory - which it could be?

Cal might have been vocal about it, but it didn't happen while he was around, if I remember correctly. But I believe he managed to take the majority of the AD budget for the BB program, leaving FB with crumbs.

If we are still sitting here in this place after OU & TX join the SEC, I may start to to get tired. I believe there was talk we would be one of the teams to replace them in the BIG 12.

However, I'm greedy and hope the ACC grab us when the next shift comes.

We need to own this league. Football better get their act together now. Players on the field, Fanny's in the seats. Play people, beat people.

I did my undergraduate work at Wake Forest and my Masters and PhD work at Memphis. I would LOVE for Memphis to get an invite to the ACC. My only problem then would be who to root for when they played one another. I absolutely HATED it when they played each other in a bowl game several years ago. I love both schools and root for both.

BigD,

I think three things have reduced the board traffic above having a frustrated fan base.
1. The negative, attack, snarky posters the ruin threads and derail threads,
2. Personal battles played out day after day in thread after thread, and
3. The lack of knowledgeable posters with inside information.

At least those 3 things have caused my extended breaks.

Please add a #4 - threads that turn political, which most do.
See my correction. I was waiting on my PT appointment and didn’t finish #3

On top of that, while we were failing to improve our lot in life, the big boys have destroyed any type of fairness there ever was in college sports.

I don't know which is worse, to be in a league with UAB and UTSA, or being at the bottom of a P5 league with no asperations of winning, just hoping to win some OOC games and upset one of the good teams to make a bowl maybe, but probably not. Both scenarios suck.

I am old, short, fat, tired, and ugly.

But why lie about the obvious.

He said it but no, he had no influence on that process. He was long gone before that gained any traction and a combination of money, politics and strong leadership accomplished what few thought was possible.

I have been a fan since the mid 50's when my uncle played for the Tigers. I still go to games and i am only weary of negative fans not Tiger teams. Please go ahead and take your tired, old, apathetic self elsewhere. It will relieve us from one more irritant.

So often we have seen someone of questionable courage make this claim. It is now merely a worn out over used cliche. One that never comes to pass.

RE: Memphis Tiger Nation Is Tired
There’s also many more options to talk Tigers than when I first joined in 2010 (growth of FB, Twitter, etc). I do know the negativity has run off many posters over the years too.

I also believe Memphis is in the best shape it’s ever been in - both athletically and especially academically (R1 status is huge). Couple that with our own BOR, solid administrative team, and growth of funding for capital projects & research, I’d say the University is in the best shape ever.

Certainly it has been frustrating to be so close yet so far away for that next level in athletics. It hurts. There’s no question we have to get into that next tier (B12, ACC) to continue the momentum of this past decade.

Y’all should have been Tiger football fans during the 70 or 80 years when Rip Scherer was our football coach. Those were the bad old days.
