There has long been a divide between the people in the suburbs and the city (in fairness it goes both ways). I say this as someone who lives in the burbs and is fairly conservative, I think the bias has to do with perceptions about the poorest neighborhoods in the city and the African-Americans who reside there and attaching it to the university (which ironically is only 8-9% black). The other irony is that OSU resides in a similar neighborhood and has more black students than UC (similar percentage but larger numbers due to a larger enrollment).

Something I've seen from OSU t-shirt fans over the years is them saying UC is in the ghetto and in a ****** crime-ridden part of town. Which we all know is not true. But I find it hilarious because OSU resides in a similar area in Columbus (and has crime just like all urban universities). Both are schools north of their city's downtown in their own college neighborhoods. Of course it's only the t-shirt fans that say this because they've never spent real time on OSU's campus. They just watch games on tv or just go to football games and leave

Eh I disagree on this point. Short North has been the hot spot for about a decade now. 30 years ago apparently if you went a few streets too south it got rough.

I’d say safe south and west. North safe unless you get 10+ blocks above campus. Still not bad but a poorer area.

East is the side most students live and if you get just 4 streets over from campus you can find trouble.

OSU has a good bubble and now it’s safe to walk or whatever all the way downtown and back unlike 20-30 years ago.

UC has its issues but they don’t bother me.

When my brother attended UC, his house(s) were broken into 3 or 4 times. They were able to catch 2 of the bums you’d expect.
Disagree. OSU just has record crime. Parents were putting up billboards about it. There's crime all around OSU's campus and there's crime in the short north. They literally banned and turned off escooters because a gang was using them to snatch and grab. OSU's neighborhood is not some bastion of no crime and peacefulness. There's plenty of crime, just like every urban university. OSU's campus safety and crime is no different than UC. You're proving my point

I just have a different feel around the areas up there vs in Cincy. I never have worried about anything walking around anywhere in Columbus besides in between Ohio State and Ohio Dominican University.

Get a couple streets in the wrong direction off UC campus and I think it’s blown way out of proportion but I usually feel I’m keeping a little closer watch on what’s going on around me is all.

Greatly exaggerated. Since attending UC till today, never felt unsafe or had issues around UC's campus. Even a couple of streets in the wrong direction. You always have to keep watch in an urban environment, whether you are in Columbus, near UC or walking downtown Cincinnati. That is a given.

I found the crime discussion disingenuous, when the biggest perpetrators of the narrative had no issue attending FCC games on campus. However, it was a war zone for UC games and kids attending said Univ.

Wait until after they visit Nippert this year. Then they will really be 'miffed'.

Like Miami, Indiana strikes me as a popped collar fan base. They’ll come to UC with a superiority complex and most won’t understand Nippert until the reality slaps them upside the head. I’m confident our team and fans will have them leaving knocked down a few notches.

Probably the biggest frat school in the B1G. It's not as monolithically conservative, preppy, frat boy, business major as Miami (few places are), but that element there is more prominent than at other B1G schools.

Before it was common, IU for decades had large enrollment from the NE in other words not your regular GOP kid. Frats are all over the place politically. The exception being SEC where whites vote GOP 85-90%. Lots if Bg Ten schools have a significant Greek presence, Purdue, IU, MSU, PSU, OSU, Illinois etc. In my 4 years as a undergrad I don't recall 1 political conversation. You likely won't find Marxist Antifa types in Greek life, as they want to destroy all institutions, but you will find students from every background possible.

People who never joined a Fraternity tend to make grand sweeping ignorant generalizations about Greek life.

Nobody was bringing politics into this (at least I wasn't). The issue is the stereotypes of the people that primarily attend Miami and Indiana. There are a ton of people that resemble this on those campuses (and in their stadium on Saturdays).

I always considered the bottom picture as a positive, during my time at Miami. Well, until it was midnight on Saturday when they were crying, holding their heels, and cry-yelling at whomever.

Having sat near the student sections at IU and at Nippert, I'm sure we'll find similar behavior from UC's students when the teams get together in September. I guess I can't say that I was all that surprised at the IU students last year as their team was overly hyped after having a decent team during the COVID year.

Last year's IU team could have been much better if their QB had learned to take a sack instead of throwing dangerous passes in the middle of the field.

Bolded, true but I recall his career was riddled with injuries and he was probably hoping for a shot at the bright lights of the NFL if he stayed healthy. When we were walking back to our car after the game, we encountered what were presumably three IU undergraduates talking about the game. They were all nice and we were gracious about the competitiveness of the game. Their only remark was that it could have been better if their QB hadn't thrown the ball into the hands of the Bearcats all afternoon.

I know this OT, but...

I'm sitting in Nippert right now... my elder son is attending a UC football camp...

God, I LOVE THIS PLACE! Even now, in 90+ temp, with no game going on, this place is magic.

Almost perfect. No place is "perfect," but this is darn near close.

It sure was in 2021. 04-cheers

I agree with Bearcat Jerry. It's a unique venue in all of major college football (and soon, at the most talked about schools--the P5). UC Athletics needs to have the talking points ready for the network TV crews again this season. Compared with the ubiquitous big bowls of college football, where university students are locked out all but 6 or 7 days a year, all UC students can experience Nippert up close and on a very personal level. That is our storyline--not the seating capacity.

Circling back to the subject of this thread, I think IU fans who attend will be blown away with what they experience in Nippert. Hopefully, that includes a loss for them and some recognition from their diehards that Cincinnati is a happening place in college football right now. Beating them again is important for our season's success too.
