RE: Toledo Mens Basketball to Gulf Coast Showcase
TK likes these mid major 3 day tournaments. This one has an average field. Most of these teams are competitive, but nothing special. TK mentioned working out a deal with a top 50 team for a neutral court game, as well as a P6 road game. Adding those will be important to build out the high end of the schedule. We've already got a mix of strong to average mid majors.
Home: Richmond, Valpo, Oakland
Away: George Mason, Vermont, N Iowa, Detroit, Marshall, probable P6 money game
Neutral: Gulf Coast (3 games), supposed unconfirmed top 50 opponent
That would be the total 13 games with MAC going back to 18 game league schedule. No sub D1 opponents and only 12 overall home games (3 non-conf, 9 MAC)

It’s nice to not have any D2 or NAIA teams on the schedule. Wish the non conference games would have included Providence, NC State and Syracuse.
Gulf South Showcase in other years would be well received, but this year we wanted more
Go Rockets!!! And to where, I have no idea.

But I thought it was a bad look for UT since there hadn't been an announcement of a holiday tournament a month ago???

WHAT are you griping about now?
Nick only said it was "very sad" they were not. Not that it "meant bad things for UT." Since UT found a tourney then obviously it is a better thing that they are in one but the opposite of "better" is not "bad."
Everyone happy?!?!

Not an unreasonable assumption, most presume (I do) schedules are laid out a year at least in advance. As a fan, given a choice between a pre-season tournament, I wouldn't prefer unless there was serious competition to measure against. From a player POV, a nice preseason "bowl game," presuming they actually get to see sights and hit the beach.
This one, the competition isn't a measuring stick of any sort but they should be competitive and it does have a pretty nice location! If I were down there, I'd go to the Toledo games.

Fly into Ft Landerdale. Hertz Arena is about a
hour and 45 Minute drive.

Well actually, 2-2 overall (2-0 at home, 0-2 on the road). And UT won the 2018 Gulf Coast Showcase at FGCU.

RE: Toledo Mens Basketball to Gulf Coast Showcase
TK almost always schedules us for a mid major 3 game tournament as preparation for the MAC tourney. UT has played very well in these tourneys under TK, winning a bunch, but it has never translated into MAC tourney success. Personally, I wish we would get in one of the mixed P6/Mid Major tourney fields that would give us probably 2 high level mid majors and 1 P6 opponent all on a neutral floor.
This field has decent teams. Drexel, N Kentucky, UT Arlington, FGCU have been to recent NIT/NCAAs and E Carolina is fairly competitive in the AAC. Indiana St is a lower level Valley team but no pushover and Kansas City beat us at their place a couple years back.

RE: Toledo Mens Basketball to Gulf Coast Showcase
I would have liked to see Toledo in the 2022 Preseason Paradise Jam announced today that includes the following first day match ups:
Drake/Buffalo Wyoming/Howard Belmont/Tarleton State Boston College/George Mason
Drake, Wyoming, Belmont and Boston College would have made for some competitive games for Toledo as well as help with their potential NET Rankings! Unfortunately I think Buffalo still garners more reputation on the National Level because of more recent success in the NCAA Tournament & regular season games against "quality" opponents which helps grease the rails to get invited to good preseason Tournaments like Paradise Jam.

RE: Toledo Mens Basketball to Gulf Coast Showcase
Akron schedule so far
H) s dakota st, last yr 30-5 ncaa's, wright st, maine
A) marshall
Neutral) miss st, and 3 of these 7 teams (western kent, texas am, tulane, LSU, ill st, nevada, kansas st, rhode island)
note/edit: s dakota st also travels to kent for a game on 12/2/22. looks like they are making a NW ohio road trip against 2 of the mac's best. possible quad 1 road games for them and akron and kent will prob return the game at their place next season.

RE: Toledo Mens Basketball to Gulf Coast Showcase
Ohio U will play Florida in a neutral site game on December 14th in Tampa. While it will obviously be a partisan Gator crowd in Tampa, the fact that the game is not in Gainesville is a major coup for the Bobcats, and one that I would like to see Toledo be able to similarly schedule against a Power 5 Opponent. If my memory is correct, I think Toledo played Kansas in Kansas City one season rather than in Lawrence, but other than that, they have played the "Big Boys" on their home courts, i.e. MSU, Michigan, Syracuse, Duke, etc.
