The future of college football
Very uncertain. The NIL bidding war is underway, after 2025 there is nothing planned for a playoff. The SEC floating the idea of having conference playoff. Seems to me were on the edge of some major changes and none of them seem good for the game as a whole. Its becoming a even more "every man for himself" than it was before and that's saying something. The ship is rudderless.

It’s needed a shakeup for over 50 years.

Possibly. I don't think that the SEC will sign on to any playoff with automatic qualifiers. That means there will be no playoff with automatic qualifiers. There is no mechanism in place that is looking out for the game as a whole. Its a system IMO is only going to exacerbate an already top loaded system. The direction its headed for currently is only going to make the rich that much richer and in control. The SEC will demand and get what they want.

RE: The future of college football
Ultimately the SEC & B10 will determine the future of the top level of CFB.
The ACC, B12, & PAC all run the risk of falling to the next level down, if/when their top brands join the top 2.
Still waiting on some hard #’s on the B10 new tv contract. If it’s $40-$50m more per school than those 3 leagues as some have suggested, it is going to be hard for the top teams in those leagues to stay behind and make that much less tv $.

RE: The future of college football
Greed and selfishness are now ruling this country. Very few try to do what is fair and best for the most. This disgusting trend has been building since the 1980s and has taken over all aspects of this country. You see it on the streets, in the restaurants, at the games, in the traffic, in movies and TV and in the unexplained anger of people in all social strata. This is a country of spoiled brats who think the world revolves around them, and even worse, somehow owes them something.
This is extremely sad and now, one of the things I have always loved, college sports, that, I admit, has been heading in the wrong direction for a long time, is about to fall off the cliff. No one can say where it will end up, but it sure seems I will not be a part of it. I am afraid those in charge of college sports don't realize that such a large portion of their fanbase have, or are about ready to, walk away, and we are the only place all that money comes from.
We need to find some selfless, intelligent people who will try do do what is just and fair and for the greater good and not what will line their own f#$% pockets. Its amazing how long this has been predicted and how hardly anyone in charge has tried to do anything.

College fb has been a mess for decades. Great sport - zero oversight. There is nothing to stop the SEC and B10 from structuring their own playoff system. The NCAA stayed in bed so long with the corrupt bowl system, that they lost any opportunity for national oversight for the good of the game. At this point it needs congressional involvement and a wave of national media calling for change. But that's like the blind, leading the blind, being coached by the blind..

I think only the NFL can save it. Time for them to start a minor league with all their money. Let college football go back to actual college students playing football.

I like it - but what the NFL do that? NCAA and collegiate level teams are in essence their farm system .. and it's not their money.

You can't be serious Clarke? Anytime the Govt gets involved they are going to want to find a way to make some money to line their pockets as well. I trust them as far as I can throw them.

Eventually the big money schools will break off and do their own thing. Something smaller than the P5. Maybe 30-35 schools. Complete break from NCAA, make all their own rules and they keep all the money from all sports (including a cut from wagering). Then they go to something like a pro league setup with contracts, salary caps, unionized players with a CBA, etc. Maybe even some form of draft. Many of the players for revenue sports won’t even have to be enrolled students. The whole charade of “student-athlete” ends and these schools acknowledge that they’re in it to make money via sports entertainment, and perhaps to entertain alums and students.
The remaining schools will be left behind in something more akin to “traditional” college sports although with less talent and national interest.

I've thought for a long time that maybe there needs to be minor league football for the really good players who simply can't break into a roster spot on an NFL team and for the cities that can't get a franchise. Maybe if it were to take the near NFL ready 18yr olds that would indeed reduce the excesses in college FB. ("reduce" not eliminate)
I guess it was one of those annoying issues of timing in human history where at the time baseball was becoming the national past-time and Major League Baseball was forming, most cities had ballparks, or you could build a wooden stadium relatively cheaply, so you could have a minor league team, but as football got to the point where a minor league was feasible, stadiums would be very expensive compared to the revenue a team would generate. Heck, when would minor league football have been feasible as a business, the late 80's, maybe the 90's? Possibly the 70's I guess.

RE: The future of college football
What is needed is a postseason twelve team championship tournament of all willing conferences. Those who hove something to lose will take part. SEC and BigX will go there own way. Many bowls will want to take part.. Let the chips fall where they may. Can't let them continue to tyrannically dictate the outcome of every season.

It's an idealistic view. You also skipped the last sentence in my post.
The sport needs serious pressure put on it for the benefit of the >50% of schools who are left out, and the 90% who have no chance at a NC. The only time that I can recall congress putting real pressure, Orrin Hatch ended up getting Utah in the P5.
But yeah, the government, lol. Maybe the SCOTUS is a better opportunity.

There is now an agreement with the XFL and the NFL. How that plays out is unknown but it looks like possibly the beginning of a feeder league. If the SEC and Big threaten to break then everyone left needs to play hardball and tell them they are truly on their own. We will never play you in any sport going forward. That would be the only effective leverage to bring the table.
