Not sure how? But I’m open to listening. Fire away.

Just 1 year on the job so not a lot of bridges built.

But he's likely to have better luck connecting with some of the locals.

Not much we can do with the former county schools since they have long been SEC feeder schools.

But the top two recruits coming out of Shelby County we're inner city kids and both left town to play at non SEC schools.

Cumberland college and Kansas St should not have been able to come in and steal talent.

You’re gonna hate this guy because of his skin color.

It’s what you do.

He for sure don’t like Penny

Not sure I understand this hire. We have some nice upgrades planned for baseball. I would have thought we’d have hired an up & coming asst coach with some recruiting chops and ties into other asst coaches they could bring into our program. Think Fuente or Norvell but for baseball? Just want a proven winner looking for the next stepping stone.

I backed up my position with cold hard statistical facts.

You're focusing on race.

The facts are he is 47-67 in his career as a head coach and job jumps like a flea on a hot stove.

If you want to debate the facts and stats I will be happy to do so.

Yes, he improve between his first year and second year and won their tournament.

But the SWAC was the weakest baseball conference in America and it doesn't take much improvement to win.

People yelled for years to get rid of Rock and his .466 winning percentage because he didn't get the results.

Doesn't make sense to replace him with a coach that has a winning percentage of .412.

That is a winning percentage of .054 less than Rock.

If he were a white coach you would be raising hell yourself.

Must eat you alive that I praised the hiring of Merriweather and never posted a negative thing about her.

Or that I have openly called for the firing of Natale Poole.

How can that be?

According to you, I am incapable of praising a black coach, but I did.

And I openly called for the firing of a white coach.

Come on dude let's debate numbers.

It wouldn't be surprising to learn that NO ONE wanted the job.

No chance to recruit top talent due to all the SEC schools around.

Hell, we're losing recruiting battles to MTSU and Cumberland College.

Up until the drive to get into the Big 12, none of the non-revenue sports got much support.

Graduate your players and don't do anything to embarrass the school and you're guaranteed to keep your job.

It is NOT an attractive job.

You can take the Tommy West speech and change football to baseball and it would fit perfectly.

The addition of the turf field (which I still don't understand why other than rain) and the new scoreboard are nice additions. However, everybody has that. Just the same thing with football and the indoor practice facility. Cool addition? Yes. However, we are sort of late to the party when it comes to that.
Regarding to the hire, I'm curious how long he's been hired because he was hired the day of the team has been eliminated...
I'm also curious to see who were the other candidates for this position as well.
I do have to realize that no one is going to Memphis as a "stepping stone" job like Norvell and Fuente did. College baseball isn't the same as football. So, teams that are successful in college baseball usually have a better chance of their coach staying, because the sport is easier to win than football when it comes to postseason.

He spent a lot of time as an assistant. The Missouri one does stand out. Other than that, it's ehh to me. He hasn't coached more than 125 games.
I'll give him a chance, but I'm curious to see who were the other applicants were.

I do agree with the comments regarding Southern. SWAC baseball isn't a tool to measure how good a team is.

hey, at least i didn't call you a racist.

just figured id save you the blood pressure spike when you found out the new coach was non-white.

carry on with your obviously non-racial take on Memphis sports.

Everything I saw said he was the recruiting coordinator with Missouri for around five years. If he did work a second job there I missed it. And I could be wrong, but it sounds like saying a person didn't hold a job at a school long because they moved from DLine coach to LB coach.

Also if you look at Norvell's history it looks very similar from that perspective. So I'm not really that concerned about job hopping.

For players that have a desire to pursue baseball beyond college, that job and certain others gave him exposure as to what MLB teams will look for. He would be able let those recruits know he can help prepare them for that, though from I gather he seems more focused on player development for the sake of the team. Which was one of my issues with what I would hear from Penny as he seemed to be focused more on player development for the sake of getting them to the NBA and not the team. Which I felt led to some of the messiness we would see on court.

Here's a summary of his pro experience and some tidbits from his time at Missouri.

https://ballparkdigest.com/2020/11/30/ke...president/

Quote:Before his stint at Southern University, Jackson worked for the Boras Corporation as a certified player agent for two years. Jackson came to the Boras Corp from the University of Missouri, where he served as the recruiting coordinator for five years (2010-2015). During his tenure at Mizzou, the Tigers captured the program’s first Big 12 championship and had multiple nationally-ranked recruiting classes.

Jackson also served as the Midwest Area Scouting Supervisor for the Washington Nationals, overseeing Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska and the Dakotas for three years.

I agree with fsquid in that his resume is unique. Technically he fits what some people want. A former assistant coach in the Big 12 and SEC and also has head coach experience. I could be wrong, but from what I can tell his wife wanted him at home more for their little children so he left Missouri and became an agent. But his desire has always been coaching. This hire feels like it was done to address recruiting. I don't know how successful that will be, but that seems to be the purpose.

Even if one of those wins was against a top ten team in the SEC? That said I'd say it's more about his ability to turnaround a team that had been dealing with postseason bans and scholarship restrictions. A reflection of his ability as a coach more than the school itself.

RE: 47-67 Kerrick Jackson new baseball coach
This is a low risk hire on a guy who is a competent person who might be able to win here. If he does , great… if he is just below .500 and graduates players and keeps us out of trouble he will do about the same as the last guy who did very little but did not cause any harm to the overall athletic program or the University.

RE: 47-67 Kerrick Jackson new baseball coach
I have been in turnaround situations and I am assuming that this coach was hired based on his past TURN AROUND experience and success. When you go from 2018: 9-33 overall, 6-15 conference to 2019: 32-24 overall, 17-6 conference; beat #8 LSU, won division, won conference, made NCAA Regional...etc, you are doing something right. This is the same type of scenario that Fuente went though when he came here and also what Calipari went through. Our program needs to be "turned around" and this coach seems to be able to get the job done based on past performance. In the job interview, his ability to turn around a college baseball program would have taken up a large part of the job interview.

More i think about it, this might work out well.

I can see Memphis getting a SWAC invite in a few years.

This should help towards that goal.
