It all depends on what the Big 12 does and what the new "Magic number" is.

The magic number for G5 used to be 12, but now its 14 with the AAC and Sunbelt going to 14, the MAC trying to go to 14 and MWC being open to it if they could have gotten the right Texas schools.

If the Big 12 goes to back to 14 or pushes up to 16 after Texas and Oklahoma leave, depending on who is chosen, the MWC and/or AAC will need replacements.

If the Big 12 goes to 16 does the AAC and/or Sunbelt go to 16?

The AAC could takes MTSU and Louisiana Tech to replace Memphis and SMU. There is also the possibility that a post Boise-SDSU MWC might not work for Colorado St and Air Force and they would reconsider the AAC offer. If that happens the MWC would have to take UTEP and NMSU, especially if the Big 12 took Boise and/or SDSU.

If everyone goes to 16, it would be tough on CUSA, but I think they have a core group of schools now as well as a willing and able upgrade pool to chose from that they will be able to survive. Had MTSU and WKU left it would have been very interesting but now in this present moment I just don't see it

You might see that ECU looking towards the SBC if the AAC loses any more teams.

maybe

but it would be very expensive to leave the AAC for the same amount of money at best in the Sun Belt.

Since both leagues are partnered with ESPN, perhaps they can work something out if they want to make a move if ECU really wanted to move.

I agree it makes sense for ECU to be in the Sunbelt especially if there is no money difference.

Yeah that's the kicker

Of course, if Memphis and SMU were to ever leave the AAC it's not at all clear that they would get a better media deal than an SBC that adds ECU and UAB.

Here's the real question: why bother killing CUSA?

It's not a property of any rival to ESPN, merely a holding pen of essentially unattached schools anyone can raid at any time, without dealing with the reclassification issues. They are bottom of the barrel in distributions and won't be part of any decisions made about FBS. Further FBS may itself become irrelevant as the SEC and Pac-12 seem to be leading the way toward essentially a football breakaway from the NCAA. If that happens, even the G5 wont have incentive to kill them for a few extra CFP dollars from cutting them out.

Basically it's a who cares if they die or not situation for the rest of FBS.

It isn't doing UAB, Troy, or USA any favors for JSU to be at the FBS level. Same for SHSU and the Texas G5s. Same for future call ups and the other G5s near them (whoever they'll be). And even though they'd be dividing the money further within each conference, dividing the G5 CFP crumbs 4 ways is better than dividing it by 5.

They should have drawn straws and taken us last 5 teams while they had the chance.

As much as you read posters trying to dog CUSA must be several worried about JSU and Sam entering FBS. Why would anyone go on for months and months trashing CUSA unless there is concern? Now strike up the band of posters saying this isnt the reason.

Who cares. A new split is coming, both FCS and G5 will likely be cut out of the CFP money. That is what G5 FBS conferences are al about, getting a piece of that P5 pie. But if they stop sharing by breaking off and doing an independent playoff, then there is no more incentive to be FCS or FBS. The classification will be meaningless to the autonomous schools and those who agree to their terms.

This is why it doesn't matter whether CUSA lives or dies. The SEC and B1G will be fine with or without them.

About the bolded, to me the answer is "in sports, it's fun to kick someone when they are sprawled on the ground like Joe Biden was after his bike fall". Which to me basically describes CUSA.

That's largely what sports fandom is, IMO - jumping all over a team, conference, league, whatever when they are in the gutter getting rained on. Especially when they have fallen there from a higher place, like CUSA was 10 years ago. Piling on after a rival has suffered misfortune is the currency of sports fandom, LOL.

I wish I could find the old bully poster of the Dad yelling at the Mom yelling at the Kid yelling at the Dog. I am sure there is some bitterness in the Big XII leftovers at being left, same for the AAC leftovers, and down the chain it goes until you get to the resident whipping boy in C-USA. If you need to feel better about your program's situation, look no further than the bottom of the pile.

No question, misery loves company, and it flows downward. Good point.

And yet, here you are telling us all about it. If it doesn't matter, what are you doing here? Go post on an SEC message board.

The people invested in their schools care. We care about the teams we love.
