RE: Report: WAC, ASUN to Enhance Football Partnership
There are only 5 crossover FB games between ASUN and WAC schools scheduled for 2022 (UCA/SFA, EKU/SUU, EKU/SHSU, JSU/SFA, UNA/TSU), the last 3 of which involve teams not eligible for the FCS playoffs. So it would certainly seem like they had no intent to play as a single conference and were banking on their petitions succeeding.

Maybe. However, planes, hotels, and other things need to be planned by football programs in advance.

The WAC and ASUN are currently engaged in formalizing the process by which the AQ will be awarded. More information will be released when available.
Yes, we all read that in the press release. Thanks.
The ASUN release gives a better explanation.

Jax State and Sam Houston are not eligible for the FCS playoffs in 2022, so both the ASUN and WAC have 5 teams (Utah Tech and Tarleton State can't be counted).
It is possible that the WAC and ASUN had applied for AQ's and were denied, so they are trying to piece together something for 2022 after the schedules were released:
ASUN press-release Wrote:The coming season will be the first for a full ASUN Football schedule. Both the ASUN and the WAC will play a full season among their own members, and both will have their own honors, awards and championship hardware. One of the two group winners will earn the ASUN-WAC AQ. Final policy to govern the AQ recipient will be determined in the coming weeks.
In 2021, the announcement was made in February, before they had announced their schedules. Had they known that they weren't getting an AQ for 2022, they would have worked out some cross-over games. Since the ASUN has 6 non-conference games it would be difficult to blow up the schedule at this point.
It’s interesting that the ASUN press release included Incarnate Word as one one of the five WAC schools participating in this iteration of the AQ alliance.

Why wouldn't they? Even if UIW is planning to back out of the WAC, there's been no announcement yet. So the press release would be outing them if they weren't included.

Incarnate Word is playing a full WAC schedule. It is only speculation that they would return to the Southland. Remember they switched to the WAC with McNeese State. McNeese State only backed out when the Southland gave them all of the championship games. I highly doubt the Southland offered to split the championships between Lake Charles and San Antonio.
Incarnate Word has been playing as a soccer affiliate in the WAC.
The WAC press release notes that Incarnate Word and Kennesaw State were both in the FCS playoffs last season.
The WAC press release say "2022 and beyond", while the ASUN only talks about 2022. The ASUN is still working on a sixth school. None of the schools are going back to the OVC/Southland/Big South.
