In my opinion, this is the rankings in order:

Memphis
USF (If they get their act together)
Colorado State (If they start winning)

SMU
Boise St (If they go back to being the giant slayer)

No disrespect at all to ECU here. Even when winning, the distance is a huge hurdle to overcome with no nearby conference rivals for traveling concerns. Memphis and Colorado St are close to the conference already and UCF would be a travel partner with USF.

I think ECU has a better chance than most perceive. Football rising at the right time. Big 12 cares more about baseball than most realize. Big 12 moving eastward. ECU has best fan support, facilities, stadium outside the p5 & just launched a new project to revitalize entire athletic complex (including new IPF, baseball stadium expansion & basketball coliseum renovation). ECU fans have just gotten used to bad luck after firing Ruff but things have turned around. That said, ECU does have some intrinsic obstacles to overcome but certainly not as big of a barrier as many on this board purport. Nevertheless, SMU, Memphis, & USF are all great candidates for various reasons as well.

Would someone explain to me how the concept of travel partners works in football? I can see it in minor sports where they take buses, but def not football where teams fly charters.

I don't see that ever being a factor in realignment. Same with bridging geographic gaps.

Boise and Colorado State aren''t "close" to anybody but BYU. The New Big 12 is a geographic mess. I don't think ECU has much of a chance but geography isn't what would keep us out. We wouldn't be that far from WVU, Cincy or UCF really.

The fact the Big XII added BYU and UCF clearly shows they're not too concerned about geography.

None from the American. I've been assured only teams from the Sun Belt will be considered for the XII.

Most likely next: Memphis

On the list (in order):
- south florida (lucked out by having UCF in conference)
- SDSU/Colorado State
- Boise
-SMU/ UNLV

Or you might consider rivalries with former conference mates Baylor, TCU, Houston, and Texas Tech. Or markets like Dallas. Or cheap air travel through D/FW or Southwest Airlines. Or quality academics. Or a large endowment. Or a large athletic budget. Or just plain strong competitiveness in all sponsored sports.

Another thread about Realignment -- which is not solely AAC focused -- gets moved off of the Realignment Board.
