Look, I think I know what you're driving at, but that is an assumption on your part that is totally unwarranted. I like Memphis, and I like The University of Memphis. I ALSO like ice cream, and I like medium rare rib-eye steak. That doesn't mean they should be on the same effing plate.

Our university is only an integral part when the city wants something from our university - like an actual paying tenant even though the city wants this renovation for other reasons, just like building FedEx Forum, the Pyramid, Memphis Memorial Stadium initially & even Crump Stadium before that. Otherwise the city has virtually no interest in our university.
I have believed this to be a fact for most of my adult life. I am beginning to see evidence that is no longer the case.
